  • This study investigates the effect of geometrical shape of concert halls, with variation in the shape and location of diffusers. The acoustical characteristics both in the audience area and on the stage 1:50 scale models of shoebox and fan-shaped halls. It was found that the front side walls affect sound diffusion. The 1:50 scale model based on the Boston Symphony Hall was used for monaural impulse response measurements for calculation of RT, EDT, C80, G and ST1. In addition, calculating the numbers and amplitudes of reflection rays were applied to quantify diffusion phenomena.

  • In exhaust pipes of automotive engines, the pulsating pressure waves are composed of fundamental frequency and high order harmonics. The nonlinearities in the exhaust pipe is caused by their interactions. The error between prediction and measurement is induced by the nonlinearities. We can not explain this phenomenon using linear acoustics theory. So power spectrum, which is used in linear theory, is not useful. This paper is concerned with the development of useful engineering techniques to detect and analyze nonlinearity in exhaust pipe of automotive engines. The study of higher order statistics has been dominated by work on the bispectrum. The bispectrum can be viewed as a decomposition of the third moment (skewness) of a signal over frequency and as such is blind to symmetric nonlinearities. The phenomenon of quadratic phase coupling (QPC) can be analyzed by the bicoherence function. Finally the application of these techniques to data from actual exhaust pipe systems is performed.

  • Since its foundation of Won-Buddhism in 1916 there established around 500 Temple-Halls in both domestic and overseas areas, and it is a native religion that currently on its development of edification activities. As for Won-Buddhism which being under rapid development likely as such going, together with its expansion of the religious influence, there required more broader spaced grand sanctum at where the large-scaled religious events are able to perform. According to this, Balcony-styled plane form is on increasing trend from the internal plane form of Won Buddhism Sanctum. On such viewpoint, this study hereby intends to grasp the character of room acoustics through on-the-spot survey about the objects of 3 Won Buddhism Sanctums which equipped with mutually different characters of the balconies already built, and willing to furnish the fundamental material which enables to improve acoustic capability when design Won Buddhism Sanctum equipped with balcony in the future.

  • We introduced an earthquake-resistant design using acoustic rnetamaterials. There are two way in that field: one is a cloaking method and the other is a shadow zone method of seismic waves. Cloaking is a general property of a wave that changes the direction depending on the refractive index. Metamaterials control the propagation and transmission of specified parts of the wave and demonstrate the potential to render an object seemingly invisible. The shadow zone is a method of negative modulus using many huge resonators and it attenuates the amplitude of the wave exponentially. We compared and explained the fimdarnental principles of the two methods.

  • This study is to make the fundamentals of sound quality evaluation in regard of acoustical characteristics of passenger compartment. The deviation of frequency response function level within audible frequency is evaluated at receiving point in the research of room acoustics. In this study, frequency response function is the one between speaker and driver's ear positions. The positions of driver and audio speakers are optimized by analysis of acoustic mode of acoustic cavity. The main reflection planes are determined by analysis sound ray path diffused at optimized speaker positions. Finally, designer selects acoustical material by analysis of absorption effect of acoustical materials on the main reflection planes in order to avoid to distortion and fluctuation of frequency response function..

  • In a compressor, highly impulsive pressure fluctuations induced by a reciprocating piston and valves cause noise and vibration to be so critical issues that low noise requirement always challenges engineers developing it. A muffler is frequently used for reducing these impulsive noise components, but has adverse effects on compressor's performance due to additional pressure drop and heat transfer of refrigerant when it pass through the muffler. In this study, compressible full 3-dimensional CFD simulations are performed to investigate both of flow and acoustic performances of a muffler in use for compressors. On a basis of the analysis results, a parametric study using design factors introduced to improve flow and acoustic performances of the existing muffler is carried out. Finally, improved designs are suggested to confirm the current results.

  • The interior vehicle noise due to the exterior aerodynamic field is an important topic in the acoustic design of a car. The air flow detached from the A-pillar and impacting the side windows are of particular interest as they are located close to the driver / passenger and provides a lower insulation index than the trimmed car body parts. This paper presents a numerical analysis method for a simplified vehicle model. The internal air cavity including trim component are included in the simulation. The car body includes the windshield and two side windows. The body is made of aluminum and trimmed with porous layers. The methodology proposed in this paper relies on two steps: the first step involves the computation of the exterior flow and turbulence induced non-linear acoustic field using CFD Code. The second step consists in the computation of the vibro-acoustic transmission through the window using the finite element vibro-acoustic solver Actran.

  • We research into the exhaust system volume what proving the optimum exhaust performance and combustion characteristics. Many automobile manufactures have developed complex exhaust system for environment regulation and noise reduction. This complex exhaust system provides acoustics silencing and low frequency noise for customers demand. Recently, automobile exhaust system have made the Dual muffler concerning to the noise and vibration reduction. Also it bring the engine performance down by decreasing the back pressure and temperature in the exhaust system. The experiments are carried out different volume of exhaust system. In order to establish the optimized conditions design factors which are taking exhaust system volume, it show how the exhaust performance influence on the engine performance in idling.

  • n optimization technique is adapted to determine the stage enclosure configuration preferred by performers. The merit function which quantifies the ease of ensemble among the performers is derived from a set of qualitative conditions recommended by researchers of hall acoustics. The ray path tracing technique based on the modified method of images is used to analyze acoustical characteristics at any locations of performers in stage enclosure. The gradient search technique is employed to find the geometric parameters which maximmize the merit function. As an example, optimum stage enclosure configuration of the trio chamber music is obtained using the computer program developed. The developed technique can be used in the design of concert hall stage and also in forming a special enclosure with movable reflecting surfaces.
