  • This paper reports results of a joint experimental and numerical investigation of the causes of near-transducer errors due to the combined effect of acoustic and ADCP-induced flow disturbance near the ADCP transducer. The laboratory study focused on an isolated ADCP (deployment without boat). Measurements of the flow disturbance produced by the ADCP in vertical and horizontal planes were obtained acquiring measurements with an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). Concurrent measurements with ADCP and ADV were made to infer additional near-transducer effects in the ADCP measurements. The numerical investigation was designed to extend the inquiry on the near-transducer potential errors when the ADCP is deployed from a boat. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was conducted to obtain the extent and magnitude of the disturbances induced by the drag acting on a boat-mounted ADCP and by the blockage effect of the instrument and boat. It is found the velocities measured by the ADCP are biased low and differ substantially from the undisturbed channel flow solution within a limited layer beneath the instrument.

  • A test facility which can simultaneously measure turbocharger operating condition variables and vibro-acoustic emission in the situations that are quite similar to real internal combustion engine operating conditions has been introduced. Using this facility, a new method sweeping from full open throttle to deep surge region along constant speed curves can be utilized instead of the stationary method that has been traditionally used to obtain turbocharger compressor maps. Data covering an extensive range of the compressor performance map have been collected and analyzed. An experimental study is performed to define a noise diagram that correlates vibro-acoustic measurements to aerothermodynamic operating conditions. An instrumentation set in the facility allows the automatic definition of the operating point on the turbine and compressor map of the turbocharger. Also, radiated sound pressure and casing vibration data corresponding to the point are obtained by a microphone in the vicinity of the compressor casing and an accelerometer on the casing. The major source(s) of noise at specific operating point on the map can be easily identified with these maps. Also, acoustic characteristics of a given turbocharger at the vicinity of the surge as well as in the surge are also defined. Finally, the possibility to define mild surge region of a turbocharger using vibro-acoustic measurements is studied.

  • Measurements of NO and NOx emission of laminar partially premixed LPG/air flames with and without acoustic excitation are reported. The NOx emission at the tailpipe of a combustion chamber is determined by chemiluminescent analyser. The NOx measurements are taken in flames with several different center tube equivalance ratio( ø$\sub$o/), and overall equivalace ratio(ø$\sub$o/) for a fixed fuel flowrate. The NOx emission decrease to reach a minimum value at an optimum ø$\sub$c/ 2. Theø$\sub$c/ 2 flame gives a compromise of thermal NO and prompt NO mechanism. In the case of excitation. the visual shape of the flame is changed from laminar flame to turbulent-like flame. With increasing levels of excitation amplitude, an optimum value of the NO and NOx emission exists. A shorter flame caused by the enhanced upstream mixing due to acoustic excitation results in the reduction of NO and NOx emission in the present flames. The reduction of flame length affects the shorter residence time of center tube mixture, and significantly influences the NOx reduction.

  • The Jing is a traditional Korean percussion instrument which plays a major role in Korean folk music. The distingishing feature of this instrument is its unique, long lasting low tone timbre. In this paper, we investigated the vibro-acoustic characteristics of the Jing. Our attention was focused mainly on findings out the physical variables that determine its unique sound. By understanding the way in which the Jing is manufactured, we were able to realize that the unique manufacturing and especially the tuning process by expert craftsman is responsible for the peculiar timbre the Jing produces. The experimental methods implemented to analyzer the Jing were planar acoustic holography and direct measurements by accelerometers. The results from the holographic method and the direct measurements were in good agreement. It turned out that unlike most percussion instruments which have inharmonic partials, the Jing has harmonic partials which are responsible for its unique low-tone timbre. From the holographic representations of the modes, it is clear that the antinodes are located in the center of the Jing which is coincident with the typical striking location. In addition, intensity maps were constructed so that the specific acoustic energy flow can be visualized. It was also interesting to see the the circulation of energy intensity which corresponds to the rotating mode of the Jing.

  • It is well known that there are two experimental errors on acoustic decay measurements. One is due to the influence of the band pass filter the other one is that of an averaging device. In this paper the influence of the filter is in detail investigated. To minimize the influence of filter, the product of the filter bandwidth Β (3㏈ bandwidth) and the reverberation time T$\sub$60/ of the room under test is at least 16. Moreover, if the initial part of an acoustic decay curve is important, the strong requirement, i.e. BT$\sub$60/> 64, must be satisfied. In this paper, the wavelet filter bank instead of the band pass filter bank is applied to obtain an acoustic decay curve. As results, the influence of filter is reduced and then the value of BT$\sub$60/ required for obtaining an acceptable decay curve is at least 4. The strong requirement for the initial part of a decay curve is also replaced by the BT$\sub$60/> 16 instead of BT$\sub$60/> 64.

  • Acoustic side-aspect target strength (TS) of living Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) was measured at 120kHz during in situ experiments. The data were collected by lowering and horizontally projecting the splitbeam transducer into the anchovy school. For analysis and interpretation of the side-aspect TS data, acoustic theoretical model, based on the fish morphology, and dorsal-aspect TS data were used. Total length of the anchovy ranged from 6.6 to 12.8cm (mean length 9.3cm). The side-aspect TS distributed between -40 and -55dB, has an obvious length dependency. The mean side-aspect TS of the anchovy was -47.8dB, and the TS was about 2dB higher than mean TS generated from dorsal-aspect measurements. With reference to maximum TS, the results of the side-aspect TS were distributed within the range of the theoretical and dorsal-aspect TS. Apparently these tendency indicates that side-aspect TS measured from the study is useful data. These in situ measurements of side-aspect TS can be applied to improve acoustic detection and estimates of the anchovy, and is necessary to measure with a various frequency and length for making enhance data.

  • Measurements of flame length and NOx emissions have been conducted to investigate the effects of acoustic excitation on flame structure in turbulent hydrogen diffusion flames with coaxial air. When the acoustic excitation of a specific frequency is applied to coaxial air stream, flame length is dramatically reduced, resulting in reduction of flame residence time. Consequently, EINOx could decrease up to 35 % and this shows that acoustic excitation is effective in reducing NOx emissions. Mie scattering technique has been used to visualize the vortex structure induced by acoustic excitation and vortex formation, development and destruction were observed quantitatively. As a result, vortex entrains coflow air into fuel stream and mixing rate between fuel and air is significantly enhanced, which may contribute to reduction of NOx emissions.

  • Localization of underwater vehicle is essential to use underwater robotic systems for various applications effectively. For this purpose, this paper presents a method of two-dimensional SLAM for underwater vehicles equipped with two hydrophones. The proposed method uses directional angles for underwater acoustic sources. A target signal transmitted from acoustic source is extracted using band-pass filters. Then, directional angles are estimated based on Bayesian process with generalized cross-correlation. The acquired angles are used as measurements for EKF-SLAM to estimate both vehicle location and locations of acoustic sources. Through these processes, the proposed method provides reliable estimation for two dimensional locations of underwater vehicles. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed method in a real sea environment.
