The Horizon Run 4 is a cosmological N-body simulation designed for the study of coupled evolution between galaxies and large-scale structures of the Universe, and for the test of galaxy formation models. Using 63003 gravitating particles in a cubic box of Lbox = 3150 h−1Mpc, we build a dense forest of halo merger trees to trace the halo merger history with a halo mass resolution scale down to Ms = 2.7 × 1011h−1M⊙. We build a set of particle and halo data, which can serve as testbeds for comparison of cosmological models and gravitational theories with observations. We find that the FoF halo mass function shows a substantial deviation from the universal form with tangible redshift evolution of amplitude and shape. At higher redshifts, the amplitude of the mass function is lower, and the functional form is shifted toward larger values of ln(1/σ). We also find that the baryonic acoustic oscillation feature in the two-point correlation function of mock galaxies becomes broader with a peak position moving to smaller scales and the peak amplitude decreasing for increasing directional cosine μ compared to the linear predictions. From the halo merger trees built from halo data at 75 redshifts, we measure the half-mass epoch of halos and find that less massive halos tend to reach half of their current mass at higher redshifts. Simulation outputs including snapshot data, past lightcone space data, and halo merger data are available at http://sdss.kias.re.kr/astro/Horizon-Run4.

Recently, noise has been regarded as one of the most notorious and frequent environmental pollutions which can be often encountered not only in the living space but also in the industrial site. Studies on physiological and psychological effects of long-term noise exposure to human being have commanded the public interest on noise issues. Since environmental noises such as traffic noise and construction noise is mainly flowed through the open window, it is necessary to develop the active noise control system to reduce it inside the building. Although control speakers and microphones for the noise signal measurement in the control region are essential for the conventional active noise control methods, it is impossible to implement them in the control region in the building environment because the control region is the living quarter and they may hinder activities of the residents. Therefore, we proposed the active window system to reduce the exterior noise flowed through the open window with microphones installed outside the window and control speakers installed at the frame of the window. To confirm the performance of the proposed active window, we carried out the simulation and experiment using active window system with 8 control speakers. Simulation results showed the noticeable noise reduction effect inside the control region within the frequency range without the spatial aliasing. Experimental result showed that the total acoustic potential energy inside the room of the scale model is reduced to about 10dB within the interest of frequency range.
Rock fracture mechanics has been widely applied to blasting, hydraulic fracturing, rock slope and many other practical problems in rock engineering. But a measuring method for the fracture toughness of rock, one of the mort important parameters in fracture mechanics as an intrinsic property of rock, has not been yet well established. To obtain mode I rock fracture toughness, the more favorable disc-typed specimens such as CCNBD, SCB, chevron-notched SCB and BDT were used in this study. Rock fracture toughness under mixed-mode and mode II conditions was measured by using the STCA applied to the CCNBD specimen. Size effects such as specimen thickness, diameter and notch length on fracture toughness were investigated. From the mixed-mode results, fracture envelops were obtained by applying various regression curves. The mixed-mode results were also compared with three mixed-mode failure criteria. In each fracture toughness test, acoustic emission was measured to get the data for determining the load levels of different crack propagation patterns.

Robust and high speed underwater communication is severely limited when compared to communications in terrestial. In free space, RF communication operates over long distances at high data rates. However, the obstacle in seawater is the severe attenuation due to the conducting nature. Acoustic modems are capable of long range communication up to several tens of kilometers, but it has low data-rate, high power consumption and low propagation speed. An alternative means of underwater communication is based on optics, wherein high data rates are possible. In this paper, the characteristics of underwater channel in the range of visible wavelength is investigated. And the possibility of optical wireless communication in underwater is also described. The LED-based transceiver and CMOS sensor module are integrated in the system, and the performance of image transmission was demonstrated.
In order to reduce the threat by illegal unmanned aerial vehicles, a tracking system based on sound was implemented. There are three main points to the drone acoustic tracking method. First, it scans the space through variable beam formation to find a sound source and records the sound using a microphone array. Second, it classifies it into a hidden Markov model (HMM) to find out whether the sound source exists or not, and finally, the sound source is In the case of a drone, a sound source recorded and stored as a tracking reference signal based on an adaptive beam pattern is used. The simulation was performed in both the ideal condition without background noise and interference sound and the non-ideal condition with background noise and interference sound, and evaluated the tracking performance of illegal drones. The drone tracking system designed the criteria for determining the presence or absence of a drone according to the improvement of the search distance performance according to the microphone array performance and the degree of sound pattern matching, and reflected in the design of the speech reading circuit.

Time Stretched Pulse (TSP) is used for transmitting and analyzing the impulse signal over the designated spatial place. However, if transfer functions of transmitter and receiver are unknown, performance investigation of free field in temporal domain is barely possible due to the overlap between the direct and indirect signal from the space. Generally, the free field or hemi-free field is evaluated by the Annex A of ISO 3745 in which utilizing the inverse square law with one-third octave band signals. In this paper, the author performs analysis of free field via applying TSP with inverse square law and the results are compared with the one-third octave band signals. According to the analysis of deviation between the corresponding signal and inverse square law model, the proposed TSP method provides the comparable performance index to the one-third octave band signal with reduced measuring time. Provided that the pre-whitening can be implementable by employing the speaker and microphone transfer function, further analyses from TSP compression are able to be performed such as multipath separation from time domain data. The anechoic chamber used in this experiment is verified conformance with ISO 3745 for free field and hemi-free field condition for limited frequency of the signal.
In this study, the heterogeneity of internal structure of various igneous rocks acquired in Korea was quantified and correlated with the seismic velocity and the point load strength. Three-dimensional X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) was used to obtain information on the internal structure of the rock specimen, and the representative unit length (LR) was calculated by applying a statistical technique to the CT images. We also proposed an estimation equation to predict the mechanical properties of rocks from the relationship between LR, acoustic velocity and point load strength. In the proposed method, it is shown that the characterization of internal structure of rocks could be utilized as an indirect index to account for the mechanical behavior of rocks by substituting physical laboratory testing for non-destructive test.

Aluminium Foam Sandwich (AFS) panels are becoming always more attractive in transportation applications thanks to the excellent combination of mechanical properties, high strength and stiffness, with functional ones, thermo-acoustic isolation and vibration damping. These properties strongly depend on the density of the foam, the morphology of the pores, the type (open or closed cells) and the size of the gas bubbles enclosed in the solid material. In this paper, the vibrational performances of two classes of sandwich panels with an Alulight(R) foam core are studied. Experimental tests, in terms of frequency response function and modal analysis, are performed in order to investigate the effect of different percentage of porosity in the foam, as well as the effect of the random distribution of the gas bubbles. Experimental results are used as a reference for developing numerical models using finite element approach. Firstly, a sensitivity analysis is performed in order to obtain a limit-but-bounded dynamic response, modelling the foam core as a homogeneous one. The experimental-numerical correlation is evaluated in terms of natural frequencies and mode shapes. Afterwards, an update of the previous numerical model is presented, in which the core is not longer modelled as homogeneous. Mass and stiffness are randomly distributed in the core volume, exploring the space of the eigenvectors.

Experiments with premixed flames in a tube have been conducted to investigate the transition phenomenon from a laminar flat flame to turbulent motions. To induce this phenomenon, a flat flame is formed in a tube. Then, the local velocity at the center of the flat flame surface is increased using $CO_2$ laser irradiation. The deformed flame front propagates with an increase in the total flame surface and oscillating instability. Eventually, the flame front accelerates explosively, and it shows turbulent flame motions with a strong noise. The dynamic behaviors of the flame front prior to the turbulent motions are analyzed in this study to elucidate this process. The physical model of the process is presented according to observations.

Although CDP stacking of common depth gathering is used to get the zero-offset-section, the exploding reflector concept is examined for the modeling of zero source to receiver offset sections in this paper. The acoustic wave equation is compared with a one way wave equation which represents the upgoing wave field only. The one way wave equation used is not derived through an expansion and, therefore, can represent dips up do 90b degrees and may not lost the signals by the dipping angles. There is apparently no simple counterpart of this equation is the space domain and it can be conveniently implemented only by a Fourier method. This paper compares their modeling technique with ray tracing and wave method for over thrust structure which is one of the geological structures are dificult to process and interpret. As a result of modeling much clean and accurate signals, especially, diffractions form the corner and dipping angles can be gathered.
