  • Acoustic signal, which is a main carrier of underwater communication, attenuates along the traveled path heavily depending on the frequency as well as inter-node distance. In addition, since it has a long propagation delay, the conventional medium access control (MAC) schemes requiring complex signaling procedures and accordingly heavy overhead messages would not be appropriate in underwater communications. In this paper, we propose a code division multiple access (CDMA) scheme as a solution for MAC of underwater communication and evaluate the performance. A hierarchical data-gathering tree topology is considered and a staggered wake-up pattern is employed for the purpose of energy saving. As a performance measure, the data rate at each level of hierarchical topology is derived.

  • In case of fine machining processes, the cutting state monitoring by a skilled operator is impossible because the physical changes generated during fine machining are very weak. To realize the high efficient and precise fine machining, it is necessary to develop the sensor based monitoring system which is able to detect the fine changes of cutting state. In this paper, the fine acoustic emission monitoring system is developed to monitor the state of the fine machining process. The developed system consists of the AE sensor and the AE signal processing unit. And this has the high-sensitivity and bandwidth which can detect fine AE signal generated during fine machining process. In order to investigate the feasibility of the developed system, evaluation experiments were performed in the fine fixed-abrasive machining processes such as polishing and glass ferrule slicing. Experimental results show that the developed monitoring system possesses an excellent real-time monitoring capability at fine machining processes.

  • Cellulose based Electroactive Paper (EAPap) has been developed as a new smart material due to its advantages of piezoelectricity, large displacement, low power consumption, low cost and flexibility. EAPap can be used fur a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device using the piezoelectric property of EAPap, resulting in the cost effective and flexible SAW device. In this paper, inter digit transducer (IDT) structure using lift-off technique with a finger gap of $10{\mu}m$ was used for micro fabrication of the cellulose EAPap SAW devices. The performance of IDT patterned SAW device was characterized by a Network Analyzer. The feasibility of cellulose EAPap as a potential acoustic device was presented and explained.

  • This paper presents an acoustic source localization technique on 2D cavity model in flow using a phased microphone array. Investigation was performed on cavity flows of open and closed types. The source distributions on 2D cavity flow were investigated in an anechoic open-jet wind tunnel. The array of microphones was placed outside the flow to measure the far field acoustic signals. The optimum sensor placement was decided by varying the relative location of the microphones to improve the spatial resolution. Pressure transducers were flush-mounted on the cavity surface to measure the near-filed pressures. It is shown that the propagated far field acoustic pressures are closely correlated to the near-field pressures and their spectral contents are affected by the cavity parameter L/D.

  • This paper proposes particle filter(PF) method using acoustic signal for localization of an underwater robot. The method uses time of arrival(TOA) or time difference of arrival(TDOA) of acoustic signals from beacons whose locations are known. An experiment in towing tank uses TOA information. Simulation uses TDOA information and it reveals dependency of the localization performance on the uncertainty of robot motion and senor data. Also, comparison of the PF method with the least squares method of spherical interpolation(SI) and spherical intersection(SX) is provided. Since PF uses TOA or TDOA which comes from measurement of external information as well as internal motion information, its estimation is more accurate and robust to the sensor and motion uncertainty than the least squares methods.

  • Recently, fiber optic hydrophone is a subject which has attracted as a underwater acoustic sensor. In this study, Finite element modeling of fiber optic hydrophone for hollow cylindrical mandrel was performed and the acoustic sensitivity was calculated to estimate the performance of single element fiber optic hydrophone. And acoustic sensitivity was measured in acoustic water tank to verify the result of simulation. The result of FE analysis and experiment is -126 dB re rad/$\mu$ Pa and -128 dB re rad/$\mu$ Pa respectively.

  • When there are low signal to noise relationships or low coherences between measured pressure and a reference sensor, a pressure field measured and estimated by NAH (Nearfield Acoustic Holography) becomes noisy on the hologram and source planes. This paper proposes a method to obtain the high coherent de-noised pressure signals from low coherent noisy ones by combining a wavelet algorithm with NAH. The proposed method obtains the de-noised field from acoustic fields on a noise source plane reconstructed through backward propagation of NAH. Thus this method does not need high coherent pressure signals on the hologram surface while the conventional nearfield acoustic holography requires high-coherent signals. The proposed method was verified by numerical simulation using noisy signals, composed of original signals and imposed noises distributed on the hologram surface.

  • This paper reports on the research which analyzes acoustic signals acquired in progressive compressing, hole blanking, and burr compacting process. An acoustic sensor was set on the bed of hydraulic press. Acoustic signal is generated from progressive stamping process. First the signal acquired from the unit process; compressing, blanking or compacting, is studied by Fourier Transform and Short Time Fourier Transform. The blanking process emitted ultrasonic signal with more than 20kHz, but the compressing and compacting processes emitted acoustic signals with lower than 10kHz. The combined signals periodically acquired right after the tool grinding were then analyzed. 70-80kHz signals appeared in time-frequency domain, but not in the frequency domain, the magnitude of which was related to the tool wear. Short Time Fourier Transform made up for the Fourier Transform in analyzing the emitted signal for stamping process in the ultrasonic domain.
