Demand for new nondestructive evaluations is growing to detect tensile crack growth behavior to predict long term performance of materials and structure in aggressive environments, especially when they are in non-visible area. Acoustic emission technique is well suited to these problems and has drawn a keen interests because of its dynamic detection ability, extreme sensitivity and location of growing defects. In this study, we analysed acoustic emission signals obtained in tensile test of high strength fire resistance steel for frame structure with time frequency analysis methods. The results obtained are summaries as follows ; In the T and TN specimen consisting of ferrite and pearlite grains, most of acoustic emission events were produced near yield point, mainly due to the dislocation activities during the deformation. However, B specimen under $600^{\circ}C$ - 10min had a two peak which was attribute to the presence of martensite phase. The first peak is before yield point the second is after yield point. The sources of second acoustic emission peak were the debonding of martensite-martensite interface and the micro-cracking of brittle martensite phase. In $600^{\circ}C$-30min to $700^{\circ}C$-60min specimens, many signals were observed from area before yield point and counts were decreased after yield point.
Demand for now nondestructive evaluation are growing to detect fatigue crack growth behavior to predict long term performance of materials and structure in aggressive environments especially when they are In non-visible area. Acoustic emission technique is well suited to these problems and has drawn a keen interests because of its dynamic detection ability, extreme sensitivity and location of growing defects. In this study, we analysed acoustic emission signals obtained in fatigue and tensile test of high strength fire resistance steel for frame structure with time-frequency analysis methods. The main frequency range is different in the noise and the fatigue crack propagation. It could be classified that it were also generated by composite fracture mechanics of cleavage, dimple, inclusion separation etc.
In this paper, for the purpose of investigation the acoustic emission(AE) behaviors during resistance spot welding process and tension test of spec steels. As the results present the resistance spot welding method that can get suitable welding qualities or structural integrity estimating method. The resistance spot welding process consists of several stages: set-down of the electrodes; squeeze; current flow; forging; hold time; and lift-off. Various types of AE signals are produced during each of these stages. For tensile-shear test and cross tensile test in resistance spot welded specimens, fracture pa 야 ems are produced: tear fracture; shear fracture; and plug fracture. Tensile-shear specimens strength appeared higher than cross tensile specimens one. In case of tensile-shear specimen happened tear fracture that crack happens in most lower plate. Also, in case of cross tensile specimens, upper plate and lower plate are detached perfect fracture was exposed increases a little as acting force is lower than ordinary welding condition. Therefore, the structure which is combined by resistance spot welding confirmed that welding design must attain so that shear stress may can interact mainly.
Background & Objectives : Nasal resistance which is halfly responsible for airway resistance is known to be influenced by hypoxia, hypercapnia, exercise, pregnancy, alcohol, ammonia and smoking. Smoking is a common part of our sociocultural environment and we have many a times been introduced to its various adverse effects, which have usually been more focused on lung problems. The purpose of this study is to determine any relationship between smoking and nasal resistance and to evaluate it's effective sites. Materials and Methods : Acoustic rhinometry was performed in 25 smokers and 25 nonsmokers who had no nasal symptoms nor abnormal rhinoscopic findings, and used an acoustic rhinometry to measure the distance from nose-piece to the C-notch, cross sectional area at the C-notch, and volume of the nasal cavity from nose-piece to 7cm. The authors compared the data between the two groups. Results : The cross sectional area at the C-notch was significantly decreased(p<0.05) in smoking group. The distance to the C-notch and the volume of nasal cavity were decreased likely in smoking group but there were no significant difference(p>0.05). Conclusion : Smoking reduced the cross sectional area at the C-notch, so increased the nasal resistance. The underlying mechanisms seems to be decreased nasal mucosal reactivity and congestion of the nasal mucosa. The authors believe there should follow more studies on pathophysiologic mechanisms and the histopathologic changes which involve the effect of smoking on nasal structures.
A certain amount of MBS rubber was added to improve toughness of PVC which has a strong tendency of being brittle, producing a mixture, PVC/MBS, from which test specimens were prepared. PVC has strong chemical resistance, oil resistance, frame retardancy and high mechanical strength. Also, it is relatively inexpensive to produce, but shows weakness to impact and difficult for processing. MBS, a typical toughening agent for PVC is generally known, when added in a small amount, to improve impact resistance and to minimize difficulties during the processing of the PVC without adversely affecting the positive aspects of the PVC. In this investigation, attempts were made to observe and determine the variations in elastic and damping constants of the PVC depending on the amounts of MBS added to the mixture, PVC/MBS, and also on the thicknesses of the specimens. An acoustic resonance technique was used for the tests in this investigation. It serves as a method to characterize properties of materials set in vibrational motions, which is initiated by low level stresses generated by externally supplied acoustic energy. Substantial variations were observed in the test results with the addition of the MBS to the PVC. Generally, the magnitudes of elastic constants decrease while the damping capacity improves when MBS rubber was added.

In this study, the well-known non-destructive acoustic emission (AE) and electrical resistivity methods were employed to predict quantitative damage in the silo structure of the Wolsong Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Center (WLDC), Gyeongju, South Korea. Brazilian tensile test was conducted with a fully saturated specimen with a composition identical to that of the WLDC silo concrete. Bi-axial strain gauges, AE sensors, and electrodes were attached to the surface of the specimen to monitor changes. Both the AE hit and electrical resistance values helped in the anticipation of imminent specimen failure, which was further confirmed using a strain gauge. The quantitative damage (or damage variable) was defined according to the AE hits and electrical resistance and analyzed with stress ratio variations. Approximately 75% of the damage occurred when the stress ratio exceeded 0.5. Quantitative damage from AE hits and electrical resistance showed a good correlation (R = 0.988, RMSE = 0.044). This implies that AE and electrical resistivity can be complementarily used for damage assessment of the structure. In future, damage to dry and heated specimens will be examined using AE hits and electrical resistance, and the results will be compared with those from this study.
Reduction of acoustic loads of space launch vehicles can be achieved by acoustic absorbers satisfying strict cleanness requirements. This limited the use of general porous materials and requires non-porous sound absorbers. Micro-perforated panel absorbers(MPPA) is one of promising sound absorbers satisfying the cleanness requirement for launch vehicles. However, its applicability was limited to low sound pressure levels according to the acoustic impedance model of micro-perforated panels. In this paper the applicability of micro-perforated panel absorbers at high incident sound pressure was investigated in experimental ways. The absorption characteristics of a micro-perforated panel absorber was simulated according to its design variables, e.g., minute hole diameters and aperture ratios. It was shown that optimal design can be readily done by using proposed design charts. Experiments were conducted to measure acoustic properties of the designed micro-perforated panel absorbers. The results showed that acoustic resistance increases rapidly as incident sound pressure level does but change of acoustic reactance can be neglected in a practical point of view. This caused the decrease of peak value of absorption coefficient at high incident sound pressure level, but the amount of reduction can be accepted in practice. The major advantage of the micro-perforated panel absorber(wide absorption bandwidth) was still kept at high sound pressure level.
An empirical acoustic impedance model of acoustic resonators with extended neck at a high sound pressure environment is proposed. The acoustic resonator with extended neck into its cavity is appropriate for the launcher fairing application because the length of neck does not increase the total height of the resonator. This enables one to design slim and light acoustic resonators for launch vehicles. The suggested acoustic impedance model considers the incident pressure and geometric variables(the neck length, the perforation ratio and the hole diameter) in terms of non-dimensional variables. Several acoustic resonators with extended neck are manufactured and their wall impedances are measured according to the pre-defined incident pressure levels. Effects of non-dimensional variables on the non-linear acoustic impedance are investigated so that a simple non-linear impedance model for the launcher fairing application can be proposed. It is demonstrated that the estimated acoustic resistance and acoustic length correction show reasonable agreement with the measured ones within the range of design parameters for launcher fairings.
The fatigue test was carried out to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of fire resistance steel for frame structure and heat affected zone (HAZ) by the one side Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). In this paper, the fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated with the compact tension specimen of base metal and the HAZ according to chemical composition and rolling end temperature, respectively. And the acoustic emission signals obtained from the fatigue test were analyzed by the time-frequency analysis method as a nondestructive evaluation. Main results obtained are summarized as follows; The hardness was appeared softening phenomenon that weld metal and HAZ are lower than that of base metal. Fatigue life of welded specimen was longer than that of base metal. m was 3~4.5 in base metal and 3.8~5.8 in HAZ. The main frequency range of acoustic emission signal analyzed from time-frequency method is different with the range by noise and crack. Also, it could be classified that it was also generated by fracture mechanics of dimple, inclusion etc.
