  • In this paper, we first analyze the differences of underwater acoustic (UWA) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems and conventional terrestrial OFDM system, and give a simple introduction of the backgrounds. By considering the real UWA channel environments, the measured channel data is used to generate the UWA channel model and calculate the relative parameters for underwater OFDM systems. Practical least square (LS) based channel estimation with linear interpolation are adopted to obtain the channel state information (CSI) at receiver side. As multi-input multi-output (MIMO) processing techniques, Alamouti code is implemented and evaluated to perform for space time block coding (STBC) and space frequency block coding (SFBC) for UWA OFDM systems with the MIMO configuration of $2{\times}1$, at the same time, $1{\times}2$ maximum ratio combining (MRC) is performed for the purpose of comparison. The simulation results show that, with perfect channel estimation, SFBC failed to work duo to the serious frequency selectivity of UWA channel environments. When the practical channel estimation is applied, in the case of STBC, the proposed 4-column pilot pattern gives better performance about 7dB than SISO system.

  • Recently, UWAC (underwater acoustic communication) has been studied by many scholars and researchers. DS-CDMA, OFDM (orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing), and MIMO (multi-input multi-output), modulation and error correction, and others techniques that can transmit high-speed data are used in UWAC. In this paper, we first briefly present the theoretical background of estimating the arrival time of the first non-background segment in both signals and calculate the temporal difference. We also present the initial experimental result of estimating the arrival time.

  • AThis paper measured real sea area for performance analysis according to distance from west sea and south sea of Korea. The performance of the underwater OFDM system was analyzed by comparing the performance of the West and South Seas by adjusting the number of data repetitive transmissions and the pilot symbol placement interval parameters based on the real-sea data measured from the distance and Data rate of the West and South Sea vessels. In conclusion, when comparing the performance of the South Sea at the Data rate and distance, the BER performance of the South Sea was similar at the 5 km South Sea and 1 km West Sea under the same conditions. Placement interval of pilot symbol at 10 km of South Sea and 3 km of West Sea is (𝚫f, 𝚫t) = (6, 3) and the number of times the PRB is (Rf, Rt) = (2, 1) repeated. We confirmed that we can send high data over long distances in the South Sea.

  • An Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless communication system has drawn wide attention for its high transmission rate and high spectrum efficiency in not only radio but also Underwater Acoustic (UWA) applications. Because of the narrow sub-carrier spacing of OFDM, orthogonality between sub-carriers is easily affected by Doppler effect caused by the movement of transmitter or receiver. Previously, Doppler compensation signal processing algorithm for Desired propagation path was proposed. However, other Doppler shifts caused by delayed Undesired signal arriving from different directions cannot be perfectly compensated. Then Receiver Bit Error Rate (BER) is degraded by Inter-Carrier-Interference (ICI) caused in the case of Multi-path Doppler channel. To mitigate the ICI effect, a modified Delay and Doppler Profiler (mDDP), which estimates not only attenuation, relative delay and Doppler shift but also sampling clock shift of each multi-path component, is proposed. Based on the outputs of mDDP, an ICI canceling multi-tap equalizer is also proposed. Computer simulated performances of one-tap equalizer with the conventional Time domain linear interpolated Channel Transfer Function (CTF) estimator, multi-tap equalizer based on mDDP are compared. According to the simulation results, BER improvement has been observed. Especially, in the condition of 16QAM modulation, transmitting vessel speed of 6m/s, two-path multipath channel with direct path and ocean surface reflection path; more than one order of magnitude BER reduction has been observed at CNR=30dB.

  • Recently, the necessity of underwater acoustic communication and demand for transmitting and receiving various data such as voice or high resolution image data are increasing as well. The performance of underwater acoustic communication system is influenced by underwater channel characteristic. Especially, a delay spread caused by reverberation and multi-path induces the ISI (Inter-Symbol-Interference) and reduces the communication performance. In this paper, we study the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technique for robust the delay spread in underwater channel. We also use the clipping method to overcome the performance degradation in high PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio). We confirm the performances of underwater communication system by the underwater channel model simulation model and experiment in small water tank. As a result, the multi-carrier modulation with clipping method presented low BER and the previous single carrier modulation had high BER.

  • This paper proposed an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based biomimetic communication method using a dolphin whistle which covertly transmits communication signals to allies. The proposed method divides the dolphin whistle into several time slots corresponding to a number of OFDM symbols, and modulates the communication signal by mapping differential phase shift keying (DPSK) symbols into subcarriers that have the frequency bands of the dolphin whistle in each slot. The advantages of the proposed method are as follows: In the conventional Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) and Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) based biomimetic communication methods, the discontinuity of the frequency contour is large, but the proposed method can reduce the discontinuity. Even if the modulation order is increased, the degradation of the mimicking performance is small. The computer simulations demonstrate that the Bit Error Rate (BER) and mimicking performance of the proposed method are better performance than those of the conventional CSS and FSK.

  • Acoustic communication system is a transmission technology sending sound and data simultaneously. However, data signal can be audible in this system when data is transmitted with high transmission power. The more transmission power is reduced, the more distance that can transmit data is shortened. Therefore, the study that increase the transmission distance is needed. In this paper, we would like to increase transmission distance by adapting receive diversity in acoustic communication system. We measure received performance of both proposed system and Single Input Sing Output (SISO) system according to distance with same transmission power. When SISO satisfies Bit Error Rate (BER) of $7{\times}10^{-3}$ at about 2m, Selection Combining (SC) technique satisfies 2 meters, and Equal Gain Combining (EGC) technique satisfies 4 meters.

  • This paper is about power line communication(PLC) over the low power voltage grid. The main advantage with power line communication is the use of an existing infrastructure. The PLC channel can be modeled as having multi-path propagation with frequency-selective fading, typical power lines exhibit signal attenuation increasing with length and frequency. OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is a modulation technique where multiple low data rate carriers are combined by a transmitter to form a composite high data rate transmission. The performance in consideration of the multi-path(echoes) powerline scheme is analyzed and verified by computer simulation.

  • Studies applying multiple carrier method such as OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) or FMT(Filtered Multi-Tone) to Underwater acoustic communication(UAC) system are actively under way as UAC is utilized in the various fields and the demand of high speed data transmission increases. In the existing OFDM method, the use of virtual carrier, which is inserted not to affect the adjacent channel in the frequency domain, and the cyclic prefix, which is used to reduce the impact of Inter Symbol Interference and Inter Channel Interference, decrease the throughput. In particular, the length of cyclic prefix to be used becomes longer under water since underwater has a rapidly changing channel characteristic, and the data throughput diminishes because it has to allocate more subcarrier on virtual carrier. This study therefore suggests FMT-OFDM system, a combination of OFDM and FMT, for the purpose of enhanced throughput in the underwater channel environment. Besides, in this study, channel is modeled based on data measured in real sea and the performance is analyzed after setting system parameters.

  • Doubly-selective (DS) fading channel is often occurred in many orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, such as high-speed rail communication systems and underwater acoustic (UWA) wireless networks. It is challenging to provide an accurate and fast estimation over the doubly-selective channel, due to the strong Doppler shift. This paper addresses the doubly selective channel estimation problem based on complex exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM) in OFDM systems from the perspective of distributed compressive sensing (DCS). We propose a novel DCS-based improved sparsity adaptive matching pursuit (DCS-IMSAMP) algorithm. The advantage of the proposed algorithm is that it can exploit the joint channel sparsity information using dynamic threshold, variable step size and tailoring mechanism. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves 5dB performance gain with faster operation speed, in comparison with traditional DCS-based sparsity adaptive matching pursuit (DCS-SAMP) algorithm.
