  • The effective tracking area of ultra short baseline (USBL) systems strongly relates to the safety of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). This problem has not been studied previously. A method for determining the effective tracking area using acoustic theory is proposed. Ray acoustic equations are used to draw rays which ascertain the effective space. The sonar equation is established in order to discover the available range of the USBL system and the background noise level using sonar characteristics. The available range defines a hemisphere like enclosure. The overlap of the effective space with the hemisphere is the effective area for USBL systems tracking AUVs. Lake and sea trials show the proposed method's validity.

  • An acoustic field in a 3 dimensional enclosure is caused from interference between sound sources and the complex reflections from wall. Therefore, changing an acoustic property of wall such as admittance means generating another acoustic field. The purpose of this paper is utilizing the characteristic to make a quiet zone. First, this paper shows that the control material is essentially on the same road as active noise control(ANC). That is, we can consider the control material as the control source of ANC. However we cannot control the reflection strength of it. Second, through a numerical simulation, this paper shows that the position of the control material is an important variable of the control.

  • Optimal loudspeaker positions are important as much as the control algorithms and hardware performance in the active noise control system. This study is similar to the past researches on the optimal transducer locations but with a far field noise source having a plane wave characteristic and the noise coming through an opening such as a window in the enclosure. An optimization technique called simulated annealing algorithm is used to find a set of optimal loudspeaker positions from a larger possible loudspeaker positions. Loudspeakers are placed on the surface of opening at the wail. Using the measured acoustic transfer impedances and numerical simulations with the optimization technique, optimal positions we identified and compared. When a small number of loudspeakers are used, loudspeaker positions on the opening near the center seems to be the best place, but when a larger number of loudspeakers are used it was difficult to find simple patterns Un the optimal positions.

  • In this study, we investigate active control of noise transmitted through a window of enclosures minimizing the acoustic power. To reduce noise of the enclosures, passive methods with absorbing material are generally used. The passive methods, however, are limited use due to the vantilation windows. In this case, these windows are path of noise leakage. Feedforward active noise control technology is applied to minimize the sound power from the enclosure. The feedforward controller is implemented with FIR filter based on the transfer functions calculated numerically. The controller reflects the delay due to FIR filter. The noise transmitted through the window is actively controlled, and the reduction of the power is obtained by 15dB.

  • This paper presents active noise control for the reduction of transmission noise passing through opening of enclosures. Enclosures are essential measure to protect noise propagation from operating machinery. Access openings of the enclosures are important path of noise leakage. First, we modeled and analyzed the noise characteristics passing through the openings of the enclosure generated by the operation of the machinery based on the finite element method. We then implemented a feedforward controller to actively control the acoustic power through the opening. Finally, we conducted optimization of placement of the reference sensors for several cases of the number of sensors. A good control performances were achieved using a minimum number of microphones arranged a optimal placement.

  • Thermo-acoustic waves can be thermally generated in a compressible flow field by rapid heating and cooling, and chemical reaction near the boundary walls. This mechanism is very important in the space environment in which natural convection does not exist. Also this may be a significant factor for heat transfer when the fluids are close to the thermodynamic critical point. In this study, the generation and transmission characteristics of thermo-acoustic waves in an air-filled confined domain with two-step pulsed heating are studied numerically. The governing equations are discretized using control volume method, and are solved using PISO algorithm and second-order upwind scheme. For the purpose of stable solution, time step was set to the order of $1\times10_-9s,\;and\;grids\;are\;50\times2000$. Results show that temperature and pressure distributions of fluid near the boundary wall subjected to a rapid heating are increased abruptly, and the induced thermo-acoustic wave propagates through the fluid until it decays due to viscous and heat dissipation. Pressure waves have sharp front shape and decay with a long tail in the case of step heating, but these waves have sharp pin shape in the case of pulsed heating.

  • Flow-excited acoustic resonance in ducted cavities can produce high levels of acoustic pressure that may lead to severe damage. This occurs when the flow instability over the cavity mouth, which is created by the free shear layer separation at the upstream edge, is coupled with one of the acoustic modes in the accommodating enclosure. Acoustic resonance can cause high amplitude fluctuating acoustic loads in and near the cavity. Such acoustic loads could cause damage in sensitive applications such as aircraft weapon bays. Therefore, the suppression and mitigation of these resonances are very important. Much of the work done in the past focused on the fluid-dynamic oscillation mechanism or suppressing the resonance by altering the edge condition at the shear layer separation. However, the effect of the downstream edge has received much less attention. This paper considers the effect of the impingement edge geometry on the acoustic resonance excitation and Strouhal number values of the flow instabilities in a ducted shallow cavity with an aspect ratio of 1.0. Several edges, including chamfered edges with different angles and round edges with different radii, were investigated. In addition, some downstream edges that have never been studied before, such as saw-tooth edges, spanwise cylinders, higher and lower steps, and straight and delta spoilers, are investigated. The experiments are conducted in an open-loop wind tunnel that can generate flows with a Mach number up to 0.45. The study shows that when some edge geometries, such as lower steps, chamfered, round, and saw-tooth edges, are installed downstream, they demonstrate a promising reduction in the acoustic resonance. On the other hand, higher steps and straight spoilers resulted in intensifying the acoustic resonance. In addition, the effect of edge geometry on the Strouhal number is presented.

  • Enhanced approach using computational and experimental method is proposed and performed to describe very well the behavior of loudspeaker than conventional method. Proposed procedure is composed of four parts. First, Thiele-Small parameters for test loudspeaker are identified by an electrical impedance method like as a delta mass method. Second part includes the processes to measure physical properties. Physical data like masses and thicknesses of loudspeaker's components are measured by an electrical precision scale and a digital vernier caliper. Third, the identified Thiele-Small parameters are proposed to be used as load boundary conditions for vibration analysis instead of electromagnetic circuit analysis to get a driving force upon bobbin part. Also, these parameters and physical data are used to modify physical properties required for computation to accommodate simulated sound pressure level with measured one for loudspeaker enclosure system. These data like as Young's modulus and thickness for a diaphragm are required for vibration analysis of loudspeaker but not measured accurately. Finally, it was investigated that simulated sound pressure level with full acoustic modeling including an acoustic port for test loudspeaker agreed with experimental result very well in the midrange frequency band(from 100 Hz to 2,000 Hz). In addition, several design parametric study is performed to grasp acoustical behaviors of loudspeaker system due to variations of diaphragm thicknesses and shapes of dust cap.

  • The technique used is the active structural acoutrol (ASAC)approach which involves controlling the acoustic response of a panel-cavity covpled system by applying oscillating force inputs in the form of prezoelectric actuators directly to the flexible panel. The linear quadratic Gaussian control scheme is used for attenuating nosie inside the rectangular enclosure causing by flexible wall vibration. Results indicated the application of control inputs to the radiating wall resukted in considerable noise reductions inside the cavity. Auso, the possibility of application to the more complicated fluid-structure coupled system is verified.
