  • This paper presents the development of a software for tracking the location of objects in the water and for creating a three-dimensional hull map. The objective of this software, as a software for underwater hull cleaning robot, is to map the location of underwater hull cleaning robot and to locate the position of sensor by identifying the shaded area of acoustic communication. For the software designed for mapping the location of cleaning robot in the water, the height and intensity were applied as variables for underwater ultrasonic communication. The software for creating a three-dimensional hull was developed by OpenGL using scanned lines from a blueprint of a ship. This software can help identifying the location of underwater hull cleaning robot without actual visibility and can be used to maintain a stable communication status by locating the position of sensor by easily spotting the shaded area of acoustic communication caused by the curved area of the bottom of the ship.

  • In this paper, we present an implementation and it's real-sea test of an underwater acoustic data communication system, which allows the system to reduce complexity and increase robustness in time variant underwater environments. For easy adaptation to complicated and time-varying environments of the ocean, all-digital transmitter and receiver systems were implemented. For frame synchronization the CAZAC sequence was used, and QPSK modulation/ demodulation method with carrier frequency of 25kHz and a bandwidth of 5kHz were applied to generate 10kbps transmission rate including overhead. To improve transmission quality, we used several techniques and algorithms such as adaptive beamforming, adaptive equalizer, and convolution coding/Viterbi decoding. for the verification of the system performance, measurement of BER has been done in a very shallow water with depth of 8m at JangMok, Geoje. During the experiment, image data were successfully transmitted up to about 7.4km.

  • In very shallow water acoustic communication channel, underwater acoustic (UWA) communication signal is observed as frequency selective fading signal due to time-varying multipath. This induces a time and frequency dependent inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and degrades the UWA system performance. There is no study about how the performances of the error correction codes are related to a multipath fading statistics in very shallow water. In this study, the characteristics of very shallow water multipath fading channel is analyzed and the performances of two different forward error correction (FEC) codes are compared. The convolution code (CC) and Reed-Solomon (RS) code are adopted. Sea experimental results show that RS code is better choice than CC in frequency selective channel with fading.

  • Recently, due to the increasing interests in deep sea development, all possible efforts to the development of underwater unmanned working vehicles such as AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) or underwater robot are exerted. This paper proposes a new efficient acoustic-based underwater image data communication system, which ensures a certain level of maximum throughput regardless of the propagation delay of ultrasonic and allowsfast data transmission through the multiple ultrasonic communication channel. Proposed system consists of an acoustic transducer which operates at 136kHz center frequency and it's 10kHz bandwidth, pre-amplifier, $\pi/4 QPSK$(Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) modulation/demodu-lation method, image compressing method using JPEG technique and modified Stop & Wait protocol. The experimental result of the system make it possible to transfer the underwater image as a high throughput at the basin test. The results of test are also verified which allows to desirable transmission performance compared with the existing developed system and the possibility to put the practical use of survey and investigation in the water.

  • The electro-magnetic wave propagates through the air in the terrestrial communications, but the acoustic wave propagates through the seawater in the underwater acoustic communication(UAC). It makes the differences between the UAC link and the well hon air communication links. In this paper, we have studied path loss, absorption and ambient noise of the ocean as a medium for UAC. We have analyzed the absorption coefficient and ambient noise level of the coastal area of South Korea and suggested a strategy for the selection of the frequency band by considering the absorption coefficient and ambient noise level. Also, we present an illustrative example of a link budget for the QPSK UAC system which has carrier frequency 25kHz, bit rate 10kbps, range 1km and BER $10^{-3}$ in the shallow water environment with an ideal AWGN assumption.

  • Underwater acoustic communication channel parameters consist of impulse response, delay spreading, scattering function, coherence bandwidth, frequency selective fading, coherence time and time variant magnitude fading statistics on which communication system modem and channel coding are designed. These parameters are influenced by sound velocity profile, platform motion and sea surface roughness in given acoustical oceanography condition. In this paper, channel model based on phasor, channel simulator, measurement and analysis method of channel parameters are given in a fixed source-to-receiver system and the parameters are analyzed using shallow water experimental data. For two different source-to-receiver ranges of 300 m and 600 m, the parameters are characterized by three multipaths such as a direct, a surface reflection path with time variant scattering and a bottom reflection path. The results present a channel modelling method of a fixed source source-to-receiver system, channel parameters measurement and analysis methods and a system design and performance assessment method in shallow water.

  • This paper presents the results of a sea trial for long range underwater acoustic communication conducted in the East Sea in November 2020. Signals were collected through a moving transmitter and 16 vertically arranged receivers, and the range between the transmitter and receiver was about 20 km. The signal in the experiment is a conventional Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) method and a superimposed DSSS method that increases data rate by superimposing of multiple circulated Pseudo Noise (PN) sequences for each symbol. The results show that the uncoded bit error rate averaged over 16 channels to which the channel coding technique was not applied was 0.0005 for the conventional direct sequence spreading method, and was 0.00124 for the superimposed direct sequence spreading method.

  • This paper estimated communication parameters according to underwater channel environment of lake for underwater acoustic communication. This paper calculated coherence time and coherence bandwidth through two experiments in actual lake environments. In both experiments, the chirp signal for channel estimation and the BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying) signal for calculating the bit error rate were transmitted. In each experiment, the distance between transmitter and receiver was 300 m to 400 m, and 500 m to 600 m. The coherence times calculated in experiment 1 and experiment 2 are 175 msec and 340 msec, and the coherence bandwidths are 10 Hz and 5.71 Hz, respectively. It is confirmed that the experimental results are more appropriate because the synchronization and the bit error rate performance are better only when the length of the synchronization signal and the interval of the pilot signal in the frame are shorter than the coherence time.

  • This paper presents the results of a sea trial for very long range spread spectrum underwater acoustic communication conducted in the East Sea in September 2021. Signals were collected through 8 vertical sensors, and the range between the transmitter and receiver was about 160 km. 30 bps Multi-Code Spread Spectrum (MCSS) method and 100 bps Chirp Spread Spectrum method were used for the transmitting signal generation. The results show that when the channel coding technique was not used in a single channel, the uncoded bit error rate was high, but when the Equal Gain Combining (EGC) diversity technique was used after frame synchronization in each receiving channel, the uncoded bit error rate was reduced to 0.1 or less.

  • In this paper, the measuring method of underwater acoustic communication channel characteristics in the shallow water using the autocorrelation characteristic of PN sequence and the undorwater communication channel analysis results from the received signal sample data are described. For measuring the underwater acoustic communication channel characteristics, two PN sequences are used as a transmitted data of I-channel and Q-channel of QPSK symbol and QPSK signal is transmitted with symbol rate of 5 kHz and carrier frequency of 25 kHz. In the receiver the received signal, which pass through 675 m and 1492 m, is sampled and then stored. Using the stored sample data, the scattering function, coherent time, delay power profile, spaced-tone autocorrelation function, delay spread, and coherent bandwidth of each propagation distance cases are analyzed. Based on the analysis results, several guidelines are suggested for the design and implementation of underwater transmission system.
