The Application of a Porous Duct for Reducing the Intake Noise of Vehicle (자동차 흡기 소음 저감을 위한 다공질 관의 적용)

  • Recently, the porous duct is becoming one of Possible ways to reduce the intake noise of an automobile instead of using resonators. In this article, acoustic characteristic of the porous duct is investigated theoretically and experimently. Futhermore, 4-pole parameter of the porous duct is introduced to predict transmission loss of it for various case. Acoustic efficiency of the porous duct is shown with experimental result using a car.

  • Magnetostrictive materials are used low-frequency sonar transmitter instead of piezoelectric materials. But it is difficult to analyze due to the nonlinearity and hysteresis of magnetostrictive materials.   • The Tonpilz transducer is one of the essential elements in active sonar application. The characteristics of transducer depend on the piezoelectric ceramics and mechanical elements such as head mass, tail mass, pre-stress rod and so on. One of the important characteristics is electric and mechanical stability of transducer for long term high power transmitting operation. This parer presents the results about long term endurance tests of the underwater acoustic transducer.

  • Speech recognition performance depends on various factors. One of the factors is the characteristic of a microphone which is used when speech data is collected. Thus, in the present experiment speech databases for tests are created through varying types of microphones. Then, acoustic models are built based on these databases, and each of the acoustic models is assessed by the data to determine recognition performance depending on various microphones.

  • In this study, the acoustic properties of steel-wire sound absorbing materials with different thickness and bulk density were investigated in terms of characteristic impedance, propagation constant, and absorption coefficient. The well-known two-cavity method was used for evaluating those acoustic parameter values in experiments. Also, in order to validate the experimentally measured values, the results were compared with the results obtained from Chung and Blaser's transfer function method and SWR method. The experimentally measured values of normal absorption coefficients were generally agreed well with the corresponding values from the transfer function method and the SWR method. Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions could be made. The magnitude of the absorption coefficient and the frequency range of the maximum absorption coefficient were controllable by changing the thickness and bulk density of the sound absorbing materials. Also, the magnitude of the absorption coefficient depended on the characteristic impedance and the propagation constant. As large as the air cavity depth at the rear side of the steel-wire sound absorbing materials, the maximum magnitude of the absorption coefficient occurred at the lower frequency ranges.

  • In this paper, the characteristic response of reflected signals of acoustic reflection microscope, V(z) phenomenon, has been studied and a new type of NDE technique has been presented. 10 Won coin, aluminium, IC component, and kevlar-epoxy samples have been used for the experiment of NDE and the acoustic microscope operating at a center frequency of 3 MHz has been used in the focused or defocused mode of operation. In experiment, it has been shown that the acoustic microscope has the resolution of $500\mu m$ and the defects present on the surface and near surface of samples have been detected by acoustic transducer and imaged on a monitor, and the variation of the contrast of image for samples has been in good agreement with V(z) phenomenon.

Experimental observation and realistic modeling of initiation and propagation of the rock fracture by acoustic emission

  • It is well known that acoustic emission (AE) is indicator of rock fracturing or damage as rock is brought to failure under the uniaxial compressive loads. In this paper, an experimental study on the source location of acoustic emission on the cylindrical specimens of granite under uniaxial compression test was made. The AE source location was made by measuring the six channel AE data. Comparing to this experiment, the numerical method is applied to model the initiation and propagation of fracture by AE using a numerical code, RFPA (Realistic Failure Process Analysis). This code incorporates the mesoscopic heterogeneity in Young's modulus and rock strength characteristic of rock masses. In the numerical models, values of Young's modulus and rock strength are realized according to a Weibull distribution in which the distribution parameters represent the level of heterogeneity of the medium. The results of the simulations show that RFPA can be used not only to produce acoustic emission similar to those measurements in our experiments, but also to predict fracturing patterns under uniaxial loading condition.

  • To understand the micro-mechanical changes and the effects of the fluoride on rat's femur after administration of sodium fluoride, the three-point bending test, acoustic emission analysis during the three-point bending test and scanning electron microscopy were performed. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Bone strength increased in the rats given 1, 5, 10 and 20 ppm of fluoride but, there were no statistical significances (p>0.05). 2. With increasing the concentration of fluoride, most AE events released rapidly just before the maximum load and smaller events were recorded than the control group's. The average of cumulative AE event counts until maximum load of the femur in 20 ppm group were significantly small with respect to the control group's (p<0.05). 3. Fracture surfaces were well coincide with the results of acoustic emission behavior. Analyses of fracture surfaces indicated that, consistent with its the highest load, rat femur in 20 ppm fluoride group displays the roughest surface.

  • The effects of acoustic excitation with various frequencies for combustion air as well as fuel on the combustion emission and local NO concentration in diffusion flame were investigated experimentally. It was studied to investigate the effects of combination between four frequencies for the fuel and various frequencies for the combustion air. The better characteristic for NO emission was revealed by acoustic exciting with frequencies for the air and the fuel excited at 0Hz and 120Hz and the generation of CO was decreased at low frequency for fuel and the excited combustion air. The amount of combustion emission could be controlled by acoustic exciting of the combustion air. And when both fuel and air are excited by some frequencies, the diffusion flame was affected by frequency which excited fuel in the middle of the flame and by air-exciting frequency at both sides of the flame. The local NO in the flame was generated much less at the condition that fuel was excited by frequencies than the condition was not.
