  • An unstructured grid finite-volume method has been applied to predict the linear and nonlinear attenuation characteristics of the expansion chamber silencer system. In order to achieve a grid flexibility and a solution adaptation for geometrically silencer system. In order to achieve a grid flexibility and a solution adaptation for geometrically complex flow regions associated with the actual silencers, the unstructured mesh algorithm in context with the node-centered finite volume method has been employed. The present numerical model has been validated by comparison with the analytical solutions and the experimental data for the acoustic field of the concentric expansion chamber with and without pulsating flows, as well as the axisymmetric blast flowfield with open end. Effects of the chamber geometry on the nonlinear wave attenuation characteristics is discussed in detail.

  • Cylindrical chamber silencers with an extended inlet and outlet are widely used to reduce the propagated noise in ducts in many application fields. In this study, an acoustic analysis is carried out for concentric extended pipes inserted into a simple expansion chambers An algebraic equation is derived by using the eigenfunction expansion and orthogonality principle. Using this analytical method, transmission losses are predicted for several configurations of the concentric extended systems.

  • This paper shows the effect of mean flow in duct. The potential equation of duct with mean flow is obtained. A finite element method(FEM) is used to predict acoustic performance of duct with mean flow. The formulation of the finite element method is derived for duct taking into consideration of the convective effect of mean flow. A simple duct, simple expansion chamber and a duct with resonator are implemented to show the effects of the mean flow.

  • A Special purpose program, based on the dimensional analysis, was developed to estimate the wide band turbulent noise in the blower of vehicle airhandling system. Acoustic power level was measured at 4 rating points around the operating condition. The experiment was performed on the reference blower model using international standard chamber, which could measure acoustic power according to the air-handling performance. Analytical model of the blower noise was determined by the measured data. Using the analytical acoustic model, it was possible to estimated the effect by the change of the operating condition, such as flow rate, static pressure and wheel rotating speed, furthermore, the diameter and the width of blower.

  • Swirl injector with adjustable backhole length was analyzed to suppress high-frequency combustion instability in Liquid Rocket Engines. In order to analyze the effect of variable backhole injector as an acoustic absorber, backhole injector was regarded as a quarter-wave resonator. As a result of theoretical approaches and acoustic tests, backhole injector with adjustable length could decrease the unstable modes of combustion chamber. And the damping efficiency was estimated by measuring damping rates experimentally.

  • The acoustic characteristics of a direct radiator type loudspeaker has been studied in this paper. The vibration displacement of the speaker cone paper obtained by the finite element analysis has been converted into the vibration velocity and used as a boundary condition for the acoustic analysis. The frequency characteristics and the sound pressure distribution of the loudspeaker resulted from the radiation of the cone vibration have been calculated by the boundary element analysis. The numerical results have been verified by experiments carried out in an anechoic chamber. The variations of the acoustic characteristics due to the changes of some design parameters have been examined using the numerical model.

  • The porous woven hose is recently considered as an effective element of automotive intake systems. In order to predict the acoustic performance of an intake system with a porous woven hose, the information on the acoustic wall impedance is required. In this article, a measurement technique that is valid over the low frequency range and without mean flow condition is presented. The measurement is performed in a cylindrical chamber with a concentric layout of the sample and the resistance is estimated from measured reactance and transmission loss data. It is observed that the measured transmission loss for a porous woven hose with an arbitrary length agrees well with the predicted one that uses the estimated impedance for a small sample length.

  • Nonlinear acoustic damping of a half-wave acoustic resonator in a rocket combustor is investigated numerically adopting a nonlinear acoustic analysis. First, in a baseline chamber without any resonators, acoustic behavior is investigated over the wide range of acoustic amplitude from 80 dB to 150 dB. Damping factor increases nonlinearly with acoustic amplitude and nonlinearity becomes appreciable at acoustic amplitude above 125 dB. Next, damping effect of a half-wave resonator is investigated. It is found that nonlinear acoustic excitation does not affect optimum tuning condition of the resonator, which is derived from linear acoustics. A half-wave resonator is effective even for acoustic damping of high-amplitude pressure oscillation, but its function of acoustic damper is relatively weakened compared with the case of linear acoustic excitation.

  • Combustion stability characteristics in actual full-scale combustion chamber of a rocket engine are investigated by experimental tests with the model (sub-scale) chamber. The present hot-fire tests adopt the combustion chamber with three configurations of triplet impinging-jet injectors such as F-O-O-F, F-O-F, and O-F-O configurations. Combustion stability bound-aries are obtained and presented by the parameters of combustion-chamber pressure and mixture (oxidizer/fuel) ratio. From the experimental tests, two instability regions are observed and the pressure oscillations have the similar patterns irrespective of injector configuration. But, the O-F-O injector configuration shows broader upper-instability region than the other configurations. To verify the instability mechanism for the lower and upper instability regions, air-purge acoustic test is conducted and the photograph or the flames is taken. As a result, it is found that the pressure oscillations in the two regions can be characterized by the first impinging point of hydraulic jets and pre-blowout combustion, respectively.

  • The acoustic characteristics of a direct radiator type loudspeaker has been studied in this paper. The natural modes of the speaker cone vibration analyzed numerically by the finite element method have been verified by comparing them with experimental results. The so-ap-proved finite-element model has been used to calculate the vibration response of the cone excited by the voice coil. The vibration displacement of the speaker cone paper has been converted into the vibration velocity and used as a boundary condition for the acoustic analysis. The frequency characteristics, directivity, and sound pressure distribution of the loudspeaker have been calculated by the boundary element method. The numerical results have been verified by the experiments carried out in an anechoic chamber. The variations of the acoustic characteristics due to the changes of some design parameter values can be examined using the numerical model.
