In this study, the validity of the acoustic impedance model and the estimation model by electro-acoustic analogy suggested by Maa for predicting the absorptive performance of multiple layer perforated plate systems is investigated. From the comparison between the experiment and calculation for the absorption performance of double layer perforated plate system, the calculated results of using Rao and Munjal's impedance model and transfer matrix method are closer to the experimental values than those of using Maa's impedance model and electro-acoustic analogy. Therefore, in order to apply the acoustic impedance model and the estimation model by electro-acoustic analogy suggested by Maa to the multiple layer perforated plate systems, it is necessary that the suggested acoustic impedance and estimation models should be re-examined.
The objective of the present study is to investigate the changes in the acoustic source characteristics and far-field noise propagation in an incompressible round jet at Re=10000 for single-frequency excitations using large eddy simulation and Lighthill acoustic analogy. We apply excitations at a frequency corresponding to the jet-column mode ($St_{D}=0.85$) or maximum growth rate in the shear layer ( $St_{\theta}=0.017$ ). The acoustic source derived from the Lighthill acoustic analogy is the second spatial derivative of the Reynolds stresses. In the case of $St_{D}=0.85$, vortex ring and large scale structures are dominant sources, whereas in the case of $St_{\theta}=0.017$, the main sources are located at an upstream position along the shear layer than in the uncontrolled case. Also, the far-field noise propagates along the axial direction due to excitation.
This paper presents the numerical prediction of airflow-induced sound in DVD drives. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is first conducted to evaluate flow field characteristics due to the high-speed disk rotation, and to support the acoustic analysis. The acoustic analogy based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation is adopted to predict aeroacoustic noise patterns. The integral solution for quadrupole volume source is included to identify the turbulence noise generated inside the DVD tray. Near-field noise is strongly affected by the flow field characteristic, which is caused by the complex shape of the tray. For a mid-field, the quadrupole noise play as a counterpart of thickness noise or loading noise, resulting in a different pattern compared with those in the near field.
To develop the code of predicting flow-field and aeroacoustic noise by an electrical cable, a combined CFD-Acoustic analogy approach is selected. The two dimensional, unsteady and incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver with κ-ω and κ-ω SST turbulence modeling is used to calculate the near flow-field around an electric cable. Near-field results are then coupled with two-dimensional Curle's integral formulation based upon Lighthill's acoustic analogy with the assumption of acoustic compactness. To validate this code, numerical results are compared with experimental data for a circular cylinder. The simulation shows an overprediction on acoustic amplitudes, but overally speaking, the spectrum pattern of sound pressure agrees well with experiment within an acceptable amount of error. In addition, a few cross-sections of the cable were selected and tested with each other in terms of drag and radiated noise
An acoustic transmission loss analysis method for mufflers with complex geometry is developed using MSC/NASTRAN on the basis of acoustic-structural analogy and two-microphone method. In this study, mufflers with simple and complex shapes are analyzed using this method and compared with theoretical and experimental results to verify it. Applying this method to design of discharge muffler in a rotary compressor, we obtained 2dB(A) of noise reduction in the range of lower than 1300Hz. Futhermore, adopting this technique for a suction muffler in reciprocal compressor, more than 10dB(A) noise reduction at 500Hz, and in total, 3dB(A) noise reduction is achieved.
To develop the code of predicting flow-field and aeroacoustic noise by a electrical cable, a combined CFD-acoustic analogy approach is selected. The two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver with a ${\kappa}{\omega}$, ${\kappa}{\omega}$ SST turbulence modeling is used to calculate the near-field around electrical cable. Near-field results are then coupled with two-dimensional Curle's integral formulation based upon Lighthill's acoustic analogy with an assumption of acoustic compactness. To validate this code, numerical results are compared with experimental data for a circular cylinder. The simulation shows an overprediction on acoustic amplitudes, but overally speaking, the spectrum pattern of sound pressure agrees well with experiment in an acceptable amount of error. In addition, various cross sections of a cable were selected and compared with each other in terms of drag and radiated noise.
The present work describes the prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a ducted axial fan. The prediction method is comprised of time-marching free-wake method, acoustic analogy, and the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff BEM. The predicted sound signal of a rotor is similar to the experiment one. We assume that the rotor rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the rotor is incompressible and inviscid. Then, a time-marching free-wake method is used to model the fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic source. The newly developed Helmholtz-Kirchhoff BEM for thin body is used to calculate the sound field of the ducted fan. The ducted fan with 6 blades is analysed and the sound field around the duct is calculated.
Prediction methods for cavitation noise are presented. At first, direct numerical simulation of cavitating flow noise has been performed, and acoustic analogy equation based on the cavitation noise modeling is derived. For the direct numerical simulation, a density based homogenous equilibrium model is employed to simulate cavitating two-phase flow and the governing equations are solved with high-order numerical schemes to resolve cavitation noise. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations for mixture fluids are discretized with a sixth-order central compact scheme, and the steep gradient of flow variables and supersonic regions are treated with the selective spatial filtering technique. The direct simulation of cavitating flow noise is performed for a 2D circular cylinder at cavitation number 0.7 and 1. The far-field noise is also predicted with the derived analogy equation. Noise spectrum predicted with the equation is well compared with the result of direct numerical simulation and also agree well with the theory.
Internal aeroacoustics of an axial fan used for circulating cold air in refrigerators are computed by using the hybrid method where CFD, acoustic analogy and BEM techniques are utilized. The unsteady flow field around the axial fan is predicted by solving the incompressible RANS equations with the conventional CFD techniques. Then, main noise sources are extracted from this unsteady flow field predictions using Acoustic Analogy. Lastly, BPF noise generated from an axial fan are predicted using these modeled sources combined with the tailed Green function techniques, which are numerically solved by the BEM technique. This hybrid model is validated by comparing the prediction with the experiment. Then, parameter studies are carried out, which suggest a capability of the current method as a design tool for the low-noise of the current axial fan system in a refrigerator.
