Bioavailability of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) can be different depending on soil pH. For this reason, main purpose of this research was to compare bioavailability of Cd and As in agricultural field under varied soil pH and different extractants. Bioavailable fraction of Cd and As in soil was extracted with $CaCl_2$, $NaNO_3$, DTPA, EDTA, and low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs). Soil samples and cultivated crops were collected at the range of soil pH 4.5-8.5 and correlation analysis was conducted between bioavailable fraction of Cd and As in soil and total concentration of Cd and As in crops. Results showed that concentration of Cd and As in acidic soil was ranged $0.002-0.462mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $0.041-4.903mg\;kg^{-1}$ respectively. In alkaline condition, concentration of Cd and As were ranged $0.006-0.351mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $0.039-2.807mg\;kg^{-1}$ respectively. Comparing bioavailable fraction of Cd and As in acidic and alkaline soil condition, higher concentration was measured in acidic condition. Similarly, higher average concentration of Cd and Asin crops was observed in acidic condition (0.398 and $0.751mg\;kg^{-1}$ respectively) than alkaline condition (0.248 and $0.264mg\;kg^{-1}$). Among different extractants, LMWOAs method showed higher correlation ($r^2=0.545$) for Cd in acidic condition indicating that LMWOAs method could be applied for evaluating bioavailability of Cd in acidic soil. However, no high correlation was observed for As in both acidic and alkaline condition. Overall, bioavailable fraction of Cd and As can be higher in acidic condition of soil than alkaline condition resulting higher uptake of Cd and As from soil to crops. Therefore, efficient best management practice (BMPs) for Cd and As in acidic soil should be conducted for minimizing uptake of Cd and As into crops.
Separation of Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) from sulfuric acid solutions was investigated by extraction with several acidic extractants such as Versatic acid, LIX 63, and Cyanex 301. From strong sulfuric acid solutions, the separation of Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) by Versatic acid and LIX 63 was not possible, while selective extraction of Hf(IV) over Zr(IV) was obtained with Cyanex 301. However, the extraction percentage of the two metals was much lower compared to that by D2EHPA. Mixing of TBP with Cyanex 301 and D2EHPA led to negative effect on the extraction and separation of the two metal ions. The difference in the extraction reaction and separation selectivity between HCl, $HNO_3$ and $H_2SO_4$ media with each extractant was discussed.
The recovery of molybdenum and vanadium from acid leaching solutions of spent catalysts using solvent extraction has been investigated. Among various acid leaching solutions, sulfuric acid solution is found to be adequate for the recovery of these two metals. The extraction and stripping behavior of the two metals in the absence and presence of other impurity metals by various types of extractants such as cationic, solvating, amine and a mixture of cationic and solvating extractants was discussed. Each type of extractants has advantage and disadvantage in terms of the possibility of separation and of forming a third phase. Among the various types of extractants, a mixture of cationic and solvating extractants seems to be the most promising extractant system for the separation of Mo and V from the acid leaching solutions of spent catalysts.
In this study, we give insight into questionable results that can be encountered in the conventional sequential extraction of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, and Zn) from soils. Objectives of this study were to determine the extraction variability of exchangeable (EXC)-metals as using six different EXC-extractants commonly accepted, and to investigate selectivity problems with carbonates bound (CAB)-metal fraction, a buffered acetate (1.0 M NaOAc; pH 5.0) extractable-metal fraction, leading to erratic results in especially non-calcareous soils. The contents of EXC-metals were markedly varied with the different extractability of various EXC-metal extractants used. The contents of EXC-Cd fraction were ranged from 2.0 to 74.3% of total Cd content in all of the metal spiked soils studied. The contents of EXC-Zn fraction extracted with the different EXC-extractants were varied with soil types, which were from 0.4 to 3.9% of total Zn in the calcareous soils, from 7.6 to 17.9% in the acidic soil, and from 13.6 to 56.8% in the peat soil. However, the contents of EXC-Cu fraction were relatively similar among the applications of different EXC-meal extractants, 0.2 to 2.1 % of total Cu, in all soils tested. Also, these varied amounts of EXC-metal fractions, especially Cd and Zn, seriously impacted the contents of subsequent metal fractions in the procedure. Furthermore, the CAB-Cd, -Cu, and -Zn fractions extracted by the buffered acetate solution were in critical problem. That is, the buffered acetate solution dissolved not only CAB-metals but also metals that bound or occupied to subsequent fractions, especially OXD-metal fraction, in both calcareous and non-calcareous soils. The erratic results of CAB-fraction also seriously impacted the amounts of subsequent metal fractions. Therefore, the conventional sequential extraction should be reconsidered theoretically and experimentally to quantify the target metal fractions or might be progressively discarded.

The dietary fiber was extracted from apple pomace with various concentrations of acidic, alkaline solvents and water in $24.4{\sim}29.3%$ yield. The extractions of water-soluble dietary fiber with acidic(6.85%) and alkaline solvent(6.55%) were more effective than the water extraction(6.0%). The higher extraction yield was obtained with increased concentration of acidic or alkaline solvents. The content of galacturonic acid was higher in the order, 0.01 M HCl(77.5%)>0.05 M HCl(76.8%)>$H_2O(76.1%)$>0.05 M NaOH(73.8%)> 0.01 M NaOH(69.0%) and the extraction with acidic solvent showed the highest pectin yield. The color value increased by extraction with solvent in higher concentration. And at equal concentration, the color value of alkaline extract was higher than that of acidic exctract. There was no relationship between the color value and the extraction yield of dietary fiber. In the investigation on the rheological properties, the shear stress increased in proportion to galacturonic acid contents. While water-soluble dietary fiber extracted with acid and water represented Newtonian rheological properties, the alkaline extract was inclined to have converting property from pseudoplastic to Bingham pseudoplastic with increment of alkaline concentration. In the studies on the time-dependence of apparent viscosity, the thixotropic property with hysteresis loop was observed in alkaline extract.
In order to elucidate the mechanism associated with the solvent extraction of uranium(VI) using DEPA and DPPA as extractant the uranium(VI) complexes formed during the solvent extraction were isolated and characterized by means of IR, NMR, chemical analysis and molecular weight determination. It has been found that uranium(VI) replaces the acidic hydrogen ions of the extractants DEPA and DPPA to form chelated polynuclear complexes, the molecular weight of U(VI)-DEPA complex being $2.1{\times}10^4$. The isolated U(VI)-DEPA complex has been found to be the same chemical species as is formed during the solvent extraction process. In case of DEPA the distribution coefficient of uranium is the largest of the pure aqueous uranium solution and is increasing for the acidic solutions in the order of $H_3PO_4.
The separation behaviour of Mo and W from sulfuric acid solution by solvent extraction with Alamine 336 was investigated as a function of solution pH and extractant concentration. Selective extraction of Mo over W by Alamine 336 was obtained in the pH range of 3-5 with low amine concentration. The mixture of Alamine 336 and acidic extractants improved the separation factor between Mo and W and was in the following order: D2EPHA > PC88A > Decanol > Versatic acid. The stripping efficiency of Mo and W from the loaded mixture of Alamine 336 and D2EHPA was very poor, while complete stripping of Mo and W was possible from the mixture of Alamine 336 and Decanol by using a mixture of $NH_4OH$ and $NH_4Cl$.
Cyanex 272 shows the highest separation factor for the rare earth elements from hydrochloric acid solution among the organophosporus acidic extractants, D2EHPA and PC 88A. Solvent extraction of Tb(III) from weak hydrochloric acid solution with an initial pH 3 to 6 was compared with Cyanex 272, its mixture with Alamine 336, and ionic liquid with Aliquat 336. The solvent extraction reaction of Tb(III) using Cyanex 272 was the same as that of light rare earth elements. Synergism was observed for the extraction of Tb(III) by the mixture with Alamine 336 when the initial concentration ratio of Cyanex 272 to Alamine 336 was higher than 5. Use of the ionic liquid led to a great increase in the extraction percentage of Tb(III) from the same initial extraction conditions. While the equilibrium pH of the mixture was always lower than the initial pH, under some conditions extraction with the ionic liquid resulted in a higher equilibrium pH than the initial pH. The loading capacity of the mixture and the ionic liquid was the same and 2.6 times larger than that using Cyanex 272 alone. Ionic liquid was recommended as a suitable extractant for the extraction of Tb(III) from hydrochloric acid solution based on the ease of handling and higher extraction percentage.
