One of the latest concepts in bonding are "total etch", in which both enamel and dentin are etched with an acid to remove the smear layers, and "wet dentin" in which the dentin is not dry but left moist before application of the bonding primer Ideally the application of a bonding agent to tooth structure should be insensitive to minor contamination from oral fluids. Clinically, contaminations such as saliva, gingival fluid, blood and handpiece lubricant are often encountered by dentists during cavity preparation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of contamination by hemostatic agents on shear bond strength of compomer restorations. One hundred and ten extracted human maxillary and mandibular molar teeth were collected. The teeth were removed soft tissue remnant and debris and stored in physiologic solution until they were used. Small flat area on dentin of the buccal surface were wet ground serially with 400, 800 and 1200 abrasive papers on automatic polishing machine. The teeth were randomly divided into 11 groups. Each group was conditioned as follows : Group 1: Dentin surface was not etched and not contaminated by hemostatic agents. Group 2: Dentin surface was not etched but was contaminated by Astringedent$^{\circledR}$(Ultradent product Inc., Utah, U.S.A.) Group 3: Dentin surface was not etched but was contaminated by Bosmin$^{\circledR}$(Jeil Pharm, Korea.). Group 4: Dentin surface was not etched but was contaminated by Epri-dent$^{\circledR}$(Epr Industries, NJ, U.S.A.). Group 5: Dentin surface was etched and not contaminated by hemostatic agents. Group 6: Dentin sorface was etched and contaminated by Astringedent$^{\circledR}$. Group 7 : Dentin surface was etched and contaminated by Bosmin$^{\circledR}$. Group 8: Dentin surface was etched and contaminated by Epri-dent$^{\circledR}$. Group 9: Dentin surface was contaminated by Astringedent$^{\circledR}$. The contaminated surface was rinsed by water and dried by compressed air. Group 10: Dentin surface was contaminated by Bosmin$^{\circledR}$. The contaminated surface was rinsed by water and dried by compressed air. Group 11 : Dentin surface was contaminated by Epri-dent$^{\circledR}$. The contaminated surface was rinsed by water and dried by compressed air. After surface conditioning, F2000$^{\circledR}$ was applicated on the conditoned dentin surface The teeth were thermocycled in distilled water at 5$^{\circ}C$ and 55$^{\circ}C$ for 1,000 cycles. The samples were placed on the binder with the bonded compomer-dentin interface parallel to the knife-edge shearing rod of the Universal Testing Machine(Zwick Z020, Zwick Co., Germany) running at a cross head speed or 1.0 mm/min. Group 2 showed significant decrease in shear bond strength compared with group 1 and group 6 showed significant decrease in shear bond strength compared with group 5. There were no significant differences in shear bond strength between group 5 and group 9, 10 and 11.
A study of the shear bond strength between dental porcelain and alloy on Ti depostion effect was conducted by Instron universal testing machine. The obtained result was as follows ; The shear bond strengths of Ti-depostion group and acid-etched group were statistically significantly greater than that of untreated control group (p<0.01)
As the etching time is varied, the change of thickness of the porous silicon layers was successfully investigated. The thickness of the PSi layer as a function of anodization time for a p-type substrate that is etched at a constant current density of 50 $mA/cm^2$ in a 35% hydrofluoric acid solution shows a linear relationship between the etching time and the thickness of the PSi layer.
The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of resin cements and ceramic etching on shear bond strength of Empress 2 ceramic and observe the change of microstructure of ceramic according to etching time. Sixty-six square ceramic specimens($6{\times}6{\times}1.5mm$) were prepared. 6 specimens were etched with different etching times(0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 60 seconds) and observed by means of a scanning electron microscope(SEM). Other sixty specimens were divided into 6 groups with 10 specimens in each group. 3 groups were etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid and each groups was bonded with 3 resin cements(Variolink II, Super-Bond C&B, Panavia F). Each specimen was subjected to a shear load in an Instron at a cross-head speed of 0.5mm/min and was observed with SEM after mechanical testing to establish modes of failure. The results were as follows : 1. Within etched groups, Variolink II and Super-Bond C&B exhibited significantly greater bonding strengths than Panavia F(p<0.05) 2. Bond strength of etching groups had three to five times greater than that of no-etching groups. 3. All of no-etching groups showed adhesive failure and etching groups mostly showed mixed failure. And, 20-second etching specimen showed the most distinct lithium disilicate crystal. so it is considered that 20-second etching is optimal time for bonding.
Objectives: The internal adaptation of composite restorations with or without resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) was analyzed non-destructively using Microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Materials and Methods: Thirty intact human teeth were used. The specimens were divided into 3 groups. In the control group, the cavities were etched with 10% phosphoric acid for 15 sec. Composite resin was filled into the cavity without adhesive. In group 1, light cured glass ionomer cement (GIC, Fuji II LC, GC) was applied as a base. The cavities were then etched, bonded, light cured and filled with composites. In group 2, the cavities were then etched, bonded, light cured and filled with composites without base application. They were immersed in a 25% silver nitrate solution. Micro-CT was performed before and after mechanical loading. One-way ANOVA with Duncan analysis was used to compare the internal adaptation between the groups before or after loading. A paired t-test was used to compare internal adaptation before and after mechanical loading. All statistical inferences were made within the 95% confidence interval. Results: The silver nitrate solution successfully penetrated into the dentinal tubules from the pulp spaces, and infiltrated into the gap between restoration and pulpal floor. Group 2 showed a lower adaptation than the control group and group 1 (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the control group and group 1. For all groups, there was a significant difference between before and after mechanical loading (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The internal adaptation before and after loading was better when composites were bonded to tooth using adhesive than composites based with RMGIC.

In the phosphoric acid based etchant, the dissolution rates of Mo films were measured by microgravimetry and the corrosion potentials of Mo and Al were estimated by Tafel plot method with various concentrations of nitric acid. Dissolution rate of Mo increased with the nitric acid concentration and reached a limiting value at high concentration of nitric acid in ambient condition. Corrosion potentials of Mo and Al shifted to positive direction and the difference between potentials of both metals was about 1,100 mV and 1,200 mV with 1% and above 4% of $HNO_3$, respectively. For a Mo/Al bilayers, the dissolution rate inversion is the main reason for good taper angle in shower etching process. Taper angles are observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) after wet etching process for Mo/Al layered films with different concentrations of $HNO_3$. In the etch side profile, it was found that Al corroded faster than Mo below 4% of $HNO_3$ in dip etching process, however, Mo corroded faster above 4%. Trend for variation of taper angle of etched side of Mo/Al layered film can be explained by considering the effect corrosion rates of both metals with various concentrations of $HNO_3$.
Characteristics of laser-assisted wet etching of titanium in phosphoric acid were investigated to examine the feasibility of this method for fabrication of high aspect ratio microchannels. Laser power, number of scans, etchant concentration, position of beam waist and scanning speed were taken into consideration as the major process parameters exerting the temperature distribution and the cross sectional profile of etched channels. Experimental results indicated that laser power influences on both etch width and depth while number of scans and scanning speed mainly affect on the etch depth. At a low etchant concentration, the cross sectional profile of an etched channel becomes a U-shape but it gradually turns into a V-shape as the concentration increases. On the other hand, surface of the laser beam focus with respect to the sample surface is found to be a key factor determining the bubble dynamics and thus the process stability. It is demonstrated that metallic microchannels with different cross sectional profiles can be fabricated by properly controlling the process parameters. Microchannels of aspect ratio up to 8 with the width and depth ranges of 8∼32 m and 50∼300 m, respectively, were fabricated.
For producing the fine ribs structure of plasma display panel, the metal ions of barrier materials during the etching process should be understood on the etching mechanism with etching conditions. Etching was done on bulk glasses of the $BaO_B_2O_3-ZnO$ system with $HNO_3$ solution at $40^{\circ}C$. The surface structure of glasses and ion dissolution were analyzed by ICP (Inductive Coupled Plasma measurement). The structure and surface of the etched bulk glass were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy and nanoindenter. As a result, Ba (3-35 ppm/min) and Zn (2-27 ppm/min) ions as major components were leached in the solution and the leached layers were found to be phosphor-rich surface layers. A decrease of the bridge oxygen and relative increase of non bridge oxygen in the etched glass were found by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
The present study investigated the effectiveness of pretreatment on dentin bonding. The adhesive resin was 5% 4-methacryloyloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META) in methyl methacrylate (MMA) combined with poly-MMA powder. Polymerization of this resin was initiated by tri-n-butyl borage (TBB). Ground bovine dentin samples were etched with either an aqueous solution of 10% citric (10-0 solution) (Group I) or aqueous solution of 10% citric acid and 3% ferric chloride(10-3 solution) (Group ll ). After etching, the primer (an aqueous solution of 35% hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEM- A) and 5% glutaraldehyde was applied on the differently etched surfaces (Group III , Group IV). The 10-0 treatment showed the lowest tensile bond strength, followed by the 10-3 treatment, primer application after the 10-0 treatment and primer application after the 10-3 treatment. The relationship among the surface morphology after pretreatment, fractured surface morphology and tensile bond strength was examined. It revealed that the surface morphology change by different pretreatment influenced the bond strength and the resulting fractured surface morphology. The correlation of tensile bond strength with the fracture morphology was explained.

Purpose: The possibility of immediate or early loading has become popular in implant dentistry. A prerequisite for the immediate or early loading of an implant prosthesis is the achievement of initial stability in the implant. Moreover, in response to clinicians' interest in verifying clinical stability to determine the optimal time point for functional loading, a non-invasive method to assess implant stability has been developed on the basis of resonance frequency analysis (RFA). The primary objective of this study was to monitor the stability of sandblasted, large-grit, and acid-etched (SLA) implants with different diameters during the early phases of healing by RFA. The secondary objective was to evaluate how the initial stability of implants varied depending on different surface modifications and other contributing factors. Methods: Thirty-five implants (25 SLA implants and 10 resorbable blasting media [RBM] implants) placed in 20 subjects were included. To measure implant stability, RFA was performed at baseline and at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 10 weeks after surgery. Results: The longitudinal changes in the implant stability quotient (ISQ) values were similar for the SLA implants with different diameters and for the RBM implants. During the initial healing period, the ISQ decreased after installation and reached its lowest values at 1 week and 2 weeks, respectively. The mean ISQ values in the SLA implants were significantly higher in ${\varnothing}5.0mm$ implants than in ${\varnothing}4.0mm$ implants. Men showed a higher ISQ than women. Mandibular sites showed a higher ISQ than maxillary sites. Conclusions: All implants used in this study are suitable for immediate or early loading under appropriate indications. A wider diameter and SLA surface treatment of implants could improve the stability, if the implant is fixed with at least 30 Ncm of insertion torque.
