  • The first esterification reactor in the continuous polymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been analyzed by solving the material balances for the two-phase system with respect to the solubility of terephthalic acid. The Newton-Raphson method was used to solve the material balance equations instead of the Simplex method that is frequently used for finding a minimum point of a residual rather than a solution of an equation. A solution for the material balance equations, with the constraint of non-zero liquid phase fraction, could not be obtained with the solubility data of Yamada et al., but could be obtained with solubilities over a minimum value that is larger than their data. Thus, the solubility data of Yamada et al. are considered to be too small. On the other hand, the solubility data of Baranova and Kremer are so large that they gave a solution with the liquid phase only. Based on our results, several typical solubility curves satisfying the constraint of a non-zero liquid phase fraction are suggested in this study; we studied the reaction characteristics of the system using these curves. A higher temperature and a lower pressure are preferred for reducing the content of diethylene glycol.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the fluoride release and solubility of glass ionomer cement associated with three pH media. For this study, GC Fuji II discs (20.0mm in diameter ${\times}$ 1.5mm thick) were immersed in pH 4.0 lactic acid, pH 7.0 distilled water and pH 10.0 KOH solutions for 1, 7, 14 and 28 days. The amount of fluoride release from the cement into three pH media were measured by fluoride specific ion electrode and the solubility was measured by weight loss of discs. The results were as follows: 1. The lower was the pH of media, the more was the amount of release of fluoride. 2. The amount of fluoride release was increased with time lapse. 3. After I day, the solubility was the highest, and after 7 days that was the least. 4. The lower was the pH of media, the more was the solubility, but there was no statistical difference in solubility according to the pH change.

  • Phenolic acids are regarded as harmful materials in food and environment science but recently, as useful materials, and thus adsorption is recommended as an effective separation technique to recover or remove phenolic acids from diluted solution. If the adsorbed phenolic compounds were useful materials, the materials should be recovered through desorption. Desorption using supercritical carbon dioxide(SC-$CO_2$) was tried to separate food-borne phenolic acids from charcoal in single solute system. In the comparisons of desorption amounts, gallic acid had the lowest lolubiligy to SC-$CO_2$. Gallic acid has more hydroxy functional groups than the other phenolic acids, which was immiscible with nonpolar SC-$CO_2$. Ferulic acid was yielded more than p-coumaric acid, because ferulic acid had much bigger molecular weight, which was affected more by van der Waas force. It was found that the most affecting factor on desorption amounts was the solubility of phenolic acids to SC-$CO_2$. The second affecting factor was van der Waals force. Response surface methodology(RSM) was conducted to read the trend of desorption. Increasing density of SC-$CO_2$ raised solubility of phenolic acids.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the purification of chitin and chitosan for textile finishing agent from crab shell. Weight loss rate(removing Ca and protein), degree of deacetylation, solubility and MIC(Minimum growth inhibitory concentration) value of chitosan and molecular weight of the treated crab shell were measured. The results of this study were as follows : 1) Weight loss rate(removing Ca) of crab shell treated with HCI increased with the concentration of HCI and treatment time, but it became constant over 60 min. of treatment time. 2) Weight loss rate(removing protein) of crab shell treated with NaOH(0.5N∼2N) increased with the concentration of NaOH and treatment temperature and time, but it became constant above loot of temperature and over 200 min. of treatment time. 3) Degree of deacetylation of chitin treated with NaOH increased with the concentration of NaOH(40∼60%), but molecular weight decreased and thus MIC value increased. 4) Concentration of acetic acid should be above 0.3% to dissolve chitosan easily. Solubility for chitosan was the highest with formic acid, and the next was acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, lactic acid and sulfuric acid in order.

  • To clarify the diffusional behavior of p-aminbenzoic acid esters in the presence of polyethylene glycol 400, cellulose membrane permeation rate, solubility and viscosity of p-aminobenzoic acid methyl ester, benzocaine and butamben were determined with PEG solutions of various concentrations. With an increase in PEG concentrations permeation rates from solutions; decreased due to an increase in viscosity of the solution. From suspensions, however, permeation rates increased due to an increase in solubility and when the initial drug concentration was constant, permeation rates were found to be greatest from the PEG-water system with the PEG concentration which transported from the solution to the suspension. Permeation rate of 4.0mg/ml p-aminobenzoic acid methyl ester was $26.51\mu$g/ml$\cdot$hr from 5g/100ml PEG solution, and that of 4.0mg/ml benzocaine was $13.17{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$ from 15g/100ml PEG, solution, and that of 2.0mg/ml butamben was $3.8{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$ from 10g/100ml PEG solution. Permeation rate was 7.0 fold in p-aminobenzoic acid methyl, ester and 3.5 fold in benzocaine compared to butamben.

  • Poly(dialkoxyphenylene 1,3,4-oxadiazole)s were conveniently synthesized to compare their material properties of solvent solubility, thermal stability and molecular alignment with respect to alkyl chain length and meta/para-phenylene structure. All prepared polymers exhibited good solubility in co-solvents containing various volume levels of chloroform to trifluoroacetic acid. Meta-polymers showed slightly better solubility than para-polymers. All polymers produced were thermally stable up to $320^{\circ}C$. Photoluminescence of polymer films was observed with blue light emission at around 450 nm. X-ray diffraction patterns of all polymers indicated that they were composed of stacked molecular sheets with the same layer-to-layer distance of $3.4\;{\AA}$. However, side chain-to-side chain and main chain-to-main distances within the layers increased with increasing alkyl chain lengths. The meta-polymer chains were separated more than the para-polymer chains.

  • In this work, modified epoxy resins which were well melted in mild solvent were synthesized and solubility assessment was carried out for synthesized epoxy resins. Bisphenol-A type, phenol novolac type and ortho-cresol novolac type epoxy resins were used and fatty acid, dodecyl phenol (DP) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) were added for synthesis of modified epoxy resins containing fatty acid (MEFA). Composition was epoxy resin/fatty acid = 1.0/0.5 and fatty acid/DP = 0.25/0.25 by equivalent weight and twelve MEFAs were synthesized according to epoxy resins. Viscosity and solubility were measured for twelve MEFAs. As a result, solubility of MEFA was excellent for mild solvent according to increasement of contents of benzene ring, glycidyl group and carbon number of alkyl group. And physical properties were measured for each coating of paints after preparing transparent paints of MEFA to melt well in mild solvent among twelve MEFAs. As a result, they showed an optimal performance on conditions of equivalent ratio of bisphenol-A type epoxy resin/fatty acid/DP/TDI; 1.0/0.25/0.25/0.5 and equivalent ratio of phenol novolac type epoxy resin/fatty acid/DP; 1.0/0.25/0.25 for drying time, adhesion, hardness, impact resistance and alkali resistance.
