  • The paper is focused on the economic analysis of two hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of yttrium and other rare earth elements (REEs) from fluorescent phosphors of spent lamps. The first process includes leaching with sulphuric acid and precipitation of a mixture of oxalates by oxalic acid, the second one includes leaching with sulphuric acid, solvent extraction with D2EHPA, stripping by acid and recovery of yttrium and traces of other rare earths (REs) by precipitation with oxalic acid. In both cases the REEs were recovered as oxides by calcination of the oxalate salts. The economic analysis was estimated considering the real capacity of the HydroWEEE mobile's plant ($420kg\;batch^{-1}$). For the first flow-sheet the cost of recycling comes to $4.0{\euro}kg^{-1}$, while the revenue from the end-product is around $5.40{\euro}kg^{-1}$. The second process is not profitable, as well as the first one, taking into account the composition of the final oxides: the cost of recycling comes to $5.2{\euro}kg^{-1}$, while the revenue from the end-product is around $3.56{\euro}kg^{-1}$. The process becomes profitable if the final RE oxide mixture is sold for nearly $50{\euro}kg^{-1}$, a value rather far from the current market prices but not so unlikely since could be achieved in the incoming years, considering the significant fluctuations of the Res' market.

  • Removal of viscous materials, mainly alginate, from sea tangle extracts by $CaCl_2$ precipitation or ultrafiltration was investigated. The sea tangle extracts were prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis of polysaccharides followed by 2 hours of boiling in 1.5% NaCl or 2.0% sucrose solution. The $CaCl_2$ precipitation resulted in higher amount of total solid, amino-nitrogen and mannitol than those values of ultrafiltration, but protein extracted was less in the former. Both methods caused a significant decrease in the viscosity and turbidity of the extracts. The composition of four nucleotides showed that UMP and IMP were not detected in $CaCl_2$ precipitated extracts, while ultrafiltered extracts showed a fairly even distribution of them. Removal of viscous material, particularly ultrafiltration increased the glutamic acid in amino acid composition and reduced serine, histidine, lysine, glycine, phenylalanine and leucine.

  • In this study, the precipitation of rare earth-sodium sulfate with sodium sulfate was conducted in order to separate rare earth from Fe in rare earth sulfate solution. Neodymium (Nd) was easily precipitated as Nd-sulfate salt with sodium sulfate, on the other hand, excessive sodium sulfate was needed for the precipitation of Dy-sulfate salt. Also neodymium not only promoted the precipitation of dysprosium sulfate salt but also increased recovery of dysprosium sulfate salt in sulfuric acid solution. At the condition of $60^{\circ}C$ precipitation temperature, 3 h reaction time, 7 equivalents sodium sulfate, the recovery of neodymium and dysprosium sulfate salt was 99.7% and 94.3% respectively from the sulfuric acid solution containing Nd of 23.39 mg/ml and Dy of 8.67 mg/ml. Lastly, from the results of separation of Dy to Nd by the method of sulfate double salt, the effect of salting out with NaCl is important to increase the grade of Dy, and 98.7% of Dy grade could be obtained in this study.

  • This study investigated the effect of organic matter on the precipitation of struvite and calcium phosphate for phosphorus recovery from synthetic dairy wastewater. Batch precipitation experiments were performed to precipitate phosphorus from solutions containing $PO_4{^{3-}}$ and $NH_4{^+}$ by the addition of $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$, separately, at varying pH, Mg/P and Ca/P molar ratios, and organic matter concentrations. Soluble total organic solids exhibited more inhibition to precipitation due to potential interaction with other dissolved ionic species involved in phosphorus precipitation. Xylan with low total acidity only exhibited significant inhibition at very high concentrations in synthetic wastewater (at up to 100 g/L). No significant inhibition was observed for Mg and Ca precipitation at relatively lower concentrations (at up to 1.2 g/L). MINTEQ simulations show that dissolved organic matter (DOM) as humic substances (HS) can cause significant inhibition even at relatively low concentrations of 0.165 g/L fulvic acid. However, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis suggested that xylan altered the crystal structure of both precipitates and had caused the formation of smaller sized struvite crystals with slightly rougher surfaces This could be due to xylan molecules adhering on the surface of the crystal potentially blocking active sites and limit further crystal growth. Smaller particle sizes will have negative practical impact because of poorer settleability.

  • After cell removal from fermentation broth the supernatant containing poly (${\gamma}-glutamic acid$) (${\gamma}-PGA$) was concentrated by ultrafiltration in order to reduce the amount of organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, propanol required for the recover of ${\gamma}-PGA$ with precipitation. The concentration and volume reduction of cell-free solution by ultrafiltration could reduce 3 times the amount of ethanol for the recover of ${\gamma}-PGA$ from cell-free fermentation broth.

  • Phytic acid content of 6 varieties of Korean barley ranged from 0.94 to 1.17%. Polishing of barleys greatly reduced the level of phytic acid. Cooking and autoclaving had little effect on phytic acid reduction, while ultrasonic treatment removed 57% of the phytic acid content. Germination decreased barley phytic acid 24% and increased phytase activity 9-fold. Phytase purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, gel filtration and DEAE-cellulose chromatography showed an optimum pH of 5.0 and an optimum temperature of $40^{\circ}C$.

  • Difference of fatty acid composition of rapeseeds from different regions in Korea and Japan were found. Erucic acid content of the rapeseeds produced in Korea, particulary in Mokpo was higher than that produced in Japan. While, the contents of oleic and linoleic acids produced in Korea were lower than those produced in Japan. It was considered being due to temperature, amount of precipitation and hours of sunshine during the maturing period.

  • The effect of concentration of coagulant and addition of phytic acid on physico-chemical properties of soybean curd was investigated. The results showed that the maximum protein yield in soybean curds was obtained with 0.029N Ca and the bound calcium per protein molecule significantly increased as the level of calcium increased. The highest precipitation of phytic acid occured at 0.029N Ca. When phytic acid was added to soybean milk during soybean curd preparation, the weight of soybean curd increased. The hardness of soybean curd was remarkably reduced by the increase of phytic acid level.
