A histochemical and ultrastructural study on the epithelia of some selected digestive tracks such as esophagus, crop, intestine of a land snail N. samarangae was carried out during the period of June 1997 to may 1998. The epithelium of digestive tract are simple columnar epithelium and consisted of five types of columnar cells. Type 1 cell which is majority in number has a brush border with microvilli on the free surface of the cell and contains numerous secretory granules supposed to be neutral mucopolysaccharide. Type 2 cell, elongated conical in shape, is rarely found in the epithelium. This cell also has a brush border with microvilli on its free surface and contains well developed rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, and secretory granules in various electron densities. This cell seems to produce both of acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides. Type 3 cell, which is morphologically similar to the Type 1 cell, has microvilli and cilia on the free surface and exists in group only in the limited regions of the intestine. Type 4 cell, typical goblet cell containing secretory granules in high electron density. Type 5 cell rarely found in the digestive tract. This cell contain inconspicuous materials.
The results of observation on the salivary gland and salivary secretory duct of Korean slug, Incilaria fruhstorferi, in histochemical method are as follows. It is observed that there are six kinds of gland cells(Type-A, B, C, E and F) making up the salivary gland of Korean slug. Of those, type-A gland cell is observed as an acid mucous cell, and type-B, C, D, F gland cells as neutral mucous cells. But in type-E gland cell, while the membrane surrounding granules exhibit alcianophilia, granules show no reaction. The salivary secretory duct composing the salivary gland of Korean slug is composed of supporting epithelial cell and four kinds of gland cells(type-A, E, F and G), of which type-A, E, F gland cells compose both the acinus of salivary gland and endothelial tissue of salivary secretory duct, and are secreted into lumen through salivary secretory duct. But, type-G gland cell is observed only in the endothelium of salivary secretory duct and mucous granules are observed as neutral mucopolysaccharide.
The present study was performed to clarify the histochemical compositions and fine structure of the mucus secreting cells in the gastrointestinal mucosa of normal mice. The mucus cells in the surface epithelium of stomach body had neutral mucin and some quantity of weak acid mucin. And the mucus cells in gastric pits and mucus neck cells had neutral mucin. The goblet cells in villial epithelium of small intestine contain strong acid sulfated mucin as their main content and a little of neutral mucopolysaccharide. However, the goblet cells in intestinal glands-Liberkuhn crypt were confirmed to contain non-sulfated weak acid mucin. The goblet cells in the surface epithelium of colon had the same component as the small intestine did. But the cells in the crypts of colon contained neutral and weak acid mucin as their main contents. The majority of secretory granules of the surface epithelial cells of the stomach body had high electron density, and some granules with low electron density appeared too. While the mucin granules in the mucus neck cells were low in its electron density, and some of those granules were frequently found to have dense core in them. Secretory granules in goblet cells of small and large intestines had low electron density. The mode of secretion in mucin-containing cells in gastro-intestinal tract was found to be merocrine.
The transplantation of cartilage, especially auricular cartilage, has assumed a role of importance in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. From long years ago, many reports have appeared in the literature describing the experimental and clinical results of the use of cartilage. At present, the evidence for survival of autograft of cartilage is admitted, But, the results for interrelationship between the bone and cartilage grafts with or without perichondrium is not so conclusive. The purpose of this study were observed as to whether autogenous cartilage grafts were fixed by means of tie with 4-0 vicryl and fibrin adhesive on the femur or microscopic findings of union state in 16 rabbits. We sacrified the experimental animals after 1, 2, 4, 6 weeks postoperatively and made the specimens as a routine laboratory procedures and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin stain, Verhoeff-van Gieson elastic fiber stain, and alcian blue periodic acid-Schiff(AB-PAS) for mucopolysaccharide. Histologic evaluation was performed under microscope. The obtaind results were as follows : 1. Fibrous union was formed between the grafting cartilage and the femur, nor any findings of calcification and formation of new bone. 2. Partial fibrous adhesion was observed in fibrin adhesive groups on 6 weeks postoperatively. 3. Appositional growth has performed more in fibrin adhesive groups than tie groups. 4. There are little difference in both for new copillary proliferation and fibroblast activations. 5. Degenerative changes have apperared more in tie groups than adhesive groups, but not related to the healing periods.
Age-related changes in the lens capsule and epithelium of cataractous patients, ranging from 20 to 7o years old, were studied by means or LM, immunohistochemistry, and TEM. The lens capsule was divided into four zones; the anterior, subanterior, middle, and basal zone. The van Gieson staining reaction for collagen was prominent at the anterior and subanterior parts of the lens capsule. The reaction was more decreased in the elder group than the younger group. The collagen type IV reaction was prominent at the anterior zone of the lens capsule and around the cell. The reaction was more decreased in the elder group than the younger group. 3. The Periodic Acid Shiff-Alcian Blue reaction for mucopolysaccharide was prominent at the anterior zone of the lens capsule. The reaction was more decreased in the elder group than the younger group. The Apoptotic reaction was prominent at the nucleus of the lens epithelial cell. In the elder the cataractous group, the number of the apoptotic cells was more decreased. The electron microscopic change of lens epithelial cells were characterized by the increase of lateral fold and the cytoplasm with various vacuoles and Golgi complex. In the basal part, lens epithelial cell protruded toward the lens capsule in the 20-year-old group. The basal part of the 40-year-old group was flattened and covered with the cytoplasmic processes of adjacent cells. In the 60-year-old group, the mass of rough filaments separated lens capsule and the basal part of the lens epithelial cell. The electron microscopic change of the middle part of lens capsule was characterized by the aggregation of electron dense materials in the 40-year-old group, and the appearance of filamentous materials and the decrease of electron dense granules in the 60-year-old group.

Glycogen storage disease (GSD) and mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) are both independently inherited disorders. GSD is a member of a group of genetic disorders involving enzymes responsible for the synthesis and degradation of glycogen. GSD leads to abnormal tissue concentrations of glycogen, primarily in the liver, muscle, or both. MPS is a member of a group of inherited lysosomal storage diseases, which result from a deficiency in specific enzymatic activities and the accumulation of partially degraded acid mucopolysaccharides. A case of a 16-month-old boy who presented with hepatomegaly is reported. The liver was four finger-breadth-palpable. A laboratory study showed slightly increased serum AST and ALT levels. The liver biopsy showed microscopic features compatible with GSD. The liver glycogen content was 9.3% which was increased in comparison with the reference limit, but the glucose-6-phosphatase activity was within the normal limit. These findings suggested GSD other than type I. Bony abnormalities on skeletal radiographs, including an anterior beak and hook-shaped vertebrae, were seen. The mucopolysaccharide concentration in the urine was increased and the plasma iduronate sulfatase activity was low, which fulfilled the diagnosis criteria for Hunter syndrome (MPS type II). To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of GSD and Hunter syndrome being identified at the same time.
