From July 1, 1985 to June 30, pH values of precipitation in Seoul area were average 5.1 and acid rain which was lower than pH 5.5 showed a frequence of 70.7%. Seasonal changes appeared in pH values of annual precipitation in Seoul. The pH patterns of spring and autumn were generally less acid than that of summer and winter, and snowfall pH was lower than rainfall. The beginning rainfall in Seoul was neutral because of alkali dust in the atmosphere. As times went on, rainfall pH was gradually low and after 1 to 2 hours, showed a steady state. On the surface soil precipitation was neutralized by soil buffering capacity.
Chitosan pre-treatment of the fabrics prior to the dyeing processes has been reported to increase the uptake of natural dyestuffs. In this study, cotton, nylon, and PET fabric specimens were pre-treated with chitosan prior to the dyeing (Method 1), or the state of chitosan acid salt formation, coated on the yarn surface, was destroyed prior to the dyeing process by alkaline neutralization process (Method 2). In case of the acid salt formed cotton (Method 1), treated fabrics showed more yellowish color component of cochineal, while alkali-treated (Method 2) cotton showed more uptake of bluish color of cochineal.

The effect of fatty acid content in oily soil and conditions of washing on the removal of triglyceride have been studied. Cotton lawn was soiled with the four-component soil-tripalmitin, palmitic acid, dodecyl alcohol and dodecane-and washed in constant temperature waterbath shaker. The detergency was estimated by analysis of triglyceride labelled carbon-14 on fabrics before and after washing by means of liquid scintillation counting. It was shown that the detergency of triglyceride washed with the nonionic, nonylphenol poly (10)-ethylene oxide and soap was increased steadily with increasing temperature, whereas with the anionics Na-DBS and SLS, the detergency was rather decreased when the temperature was elevated above $40^{\circ}C$. To investigate the effects of free fatty acid content in soil on the removal of triglyceride, the fabrics were soiled altering palmitic acid content, and then washed. From the results, the detergency of triglyceride was developed with increasing free fatty acid content. With soils containing less than $30\%$ of free fatty acid, of the three detergents tested, the nonionic was by far the most effective soil removal. Soap was intermediate and the synthetic anionic was the poorest. With soil containing $45\%$ of free fatty acid, soap was the most effective soil removal. When NaOH was added to detergent solution. the detergency of triglyceride was improved without regard to detergents. The optimum alkalinity was obtained according to free fatty acid content. And the alkalinity changed to low NaOH concentration with increasing free fatty acid content. From the results mentioned above, it could be concluded that the major removal mechanisms of triglyceride containing oily soil were mesomorphic phase formation, solubilization and soap forma-tion when alkali was added in detergent solution.
Heavy metal-tolerant microorganisms, such as Pseudomonas putida, P. aeruginosa, P. chlororaphis and P. stutzeri which possessed the ability to accumulate cadmium, lead, zinc and copper, respectively, were isolated from industrial wastewaters and mine wasewaters polluted with various heavy metals. Metal binding sites in the cells were investigated by extracting the components of the cells through pretreatments with hot water, acid, alkli, chloroform-methanol or chloroform-methanol/concentrated alkali. The heavy metal accumulation was drastically decreased by pretreatment with alkali or chloroform-methanol/concentrated alkali, but the heavy metal accumulation was not changed by pretreatment with chloroform-methanol. The amount of heavy metal accumulation was remarkably decreased by decreasing crude protein remaining in the cell. These results suggested that proteins of cell components played an important role on the heavy metal accumulation.
Various species of the genus Capsicum contain in their fruits an intensively sharp and pungent substance, Capsaicin, which was first isolated in an almost pure state by Thresh. Containing the pungent principle, Capsicums are used extensively in food as a spice and in medicine as a rubefacient and carminative. Numerous methods have been proposed for the isolation, the chemical structure and the quantitative determination of Capsaicin. Modifying the several methods described before, the Capsaicin contents in various species of the genus Capsicum were determined as follows. (1) The isolation of pure Capsaicin was the essential first step for the determination of Capsaicin contents. Powdered cayenne pepper was extracted with acetone. By the method of ether alkali partition extraction slightly modified at this laboratory and by the recrystallization with light petroleum ether that was repeated ten times, the pure crystalline Capsaicin was obtained. Using this Capsaicin, the standard absorption curve was drawn with Beckman spectrophotometer model DU for the quantitative determination of Capsaicin. 92) The powdered sample was extracted in a Soxhlet extractor with ether-acetone solvent system(3:1) for 25 hours. Capsaicin in this ether-acetone extracts was efficiently separated in a pure state by paper partition chromatography using 58% methanol solution as developing agent. It was found that 58% methanol was one of the most valuable solvent to separate Capsaicin from impurities such as sterols, fatty acids, waxes and carotenoid pigments. (3) The colorimetric method modifying the Schulte-Kruger's method which consists of measuring the red color produced with diazobenzenesulphonic acid was used. Capsaicin in various species of the genus Capsicum was determined quantitatively with use of Beckman spectrophotometer model DU at $480\;m{\mu}$.
The network structure of a glass is known to be cracked by a chemical reaction, diffusion, and ion exchange of alkali ion, formed at the crack tip of the glass surface, when water is present on the glass surface. Since the durability of glass is reduced, due to the fatigue phenomenon mentioned above, pollution problem of glass goods, especially bottle glass, is becoming acute gradually. A static fatigue phenomenon was studied thermodynamically in this paper, and a mechanism of static fatigue, a quality control, and a method of preventing pollution for the main local glass goods were also investigated. The PH of reacted solution and the quantity of extracted alkali were measured at different conditions such as temperature, reacting time, particle size of a crushed glass sample, and the nature of reacting solution. The enthalpy change was calculated from the Arrhenius equation. The results are given below; 1) The absolute value of enthalpy change for the bottle glass was found to be higher than the for the flat glass. 2) The fatigue phenomenon of a glass was more sensitive to the temperature than to the reacting time. 3) The durability of glass in acid solution is stronger than in alkaline solution. 4) The substance which cracks the network structure of glas is considered the hydroxyl ion.
For the effective utilization of diverse and abundant resource of seaweeds in Korea as a food protein supplment, extraction conditions of water, salt, and alkali soluble proteins were investigated in previous work(Ryu and Lee, 1977: Lee et al., 1977: Lee et al., 1978). The present study as a part of the serial work was thus aimed to find the conditions of isolation and purification of extracted proteins, and to evaluate the nutritional quality of the isolated seaweed proteins in terms of amino acid composition, chemical score, protein score, modified essential amino acid index(MEAAI), and in vitro digestibility presented as pepsin-pancreatin digest residue index (PPDRI). As for the isolation of extracted proteins, TCA treatment was more effective for the proteins from rhodophyceae and Chlorophyceae while the precipitation at isoelectric point was more desirable for Phaeophyceae proteins. In amino acid composition, water soluble protein fraction was superior to the other fractions in Porphyra suborbiculata whereas both water and alkali soluble fractions seemed to bo more benefitial for Enteromorpha linza and Ulva pertusa; the extraction with alcohol-alkali mixed solvent for Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum fulvellum. Glutamic acid and aspartic acid content was particularly high in all protein fractions examined. The total amino acid content of Porphyra suborbiculata and Enteromorpha linza was almost equivalent to that of dried whole egg although the essential amino acid content was lower. A comparative analysis was made on the inedexes between raw seaweed powder and isolated protein. Chemical score of Porphyra suborbiculata and Ulva pertusa was approximately 35 and 56 in cafes of raw powder and isolated protein respectively while only 10 to 16 for raw powder of Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum fulvellum and 30 to 35 for their isolated proteins. Protein score of all isolated proteins was in the range of 63 to 73 which indicates that isolated protein would be mere valuable than the fern of raw seaweed powder. Digestibility by means of PPDRI was found to be extremely low in case of raw powder but it could be doubled in case of isolated protein yielding 67 to 70 for Porphyra suborbiculata and Ulva pertusa.

The heavy metal analysis (Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, Ni) with various extraction methods was performed using the certified sample and real soil sample. In case of the certified samples, $10.5{\sim}118%$ of recovery was showed with various ranges depend on the metal kinds and extraction methods. Also, the alkali-digestion method was showed the proper results by applying in hexavalent chromium. In case of real sample, compared to amounts of heavy metals extracted using 0.1N-HCl, those extracted using acid digestion are higher by $3{\sim}24$ times in Cu, $1.1{\sim}1.5$ times in Cd, $2{\sim}23$ times in Pb, $3{\sim}104$ times in Zn, $12{\sim}101$ times in Ni, $30{\sim}202$ times in Cr. There is no considerable difference between four acid digestion methods.

In this study, the adsorption reactions in the binary component system such as kaolinite-humic acid, kaolinite-americium and humic acid-americium were investigated. After performing the basic physico-chemical properties of the kaolinite, the adsorption reactions of the humic acid on the kaolinite were carried out with varying concentration of humic acid and ion strength, and pH. With increasing HA concentration and pH, the sorption of HA onto KA decreased, while the sorption of HA onto KA increased with increasing ionic stre ngth. Also, with varying pH, the adsorption reactions of the americium-kaolinite and americium-humic acid were studied. In the acid and neutral region, Am easily adsorbed on the HA, while the sorption of Am on the HA in the alkali region decreased because of electrostatic repulsion. The results from these studies make it possible to understand the characteristics of adsorption behaviour of the americium by the humic acid in the water environment.
Using the hollow fiber membrane module in a lab-scale membrane bioreactor, the anoxic- oxic (AO) process for nitrogen removal was operated for about one year. For the influent wastewater containing 1,200-1,400 mg $1^{-1}$ of CODcr and 200-310 mg $1^{-1}$ of nitrogen, this process achieved a high quality effluent of less than 30 mgCOD $liter^{-1}$ and 50 mgN $liter^{-1}$. The removal rate of organics was above 98% at a loading rate larger than 2.5 kgCOD $m^{-3}$$d^{-1}$. When the internal recycle from the oxic to the anoxic reactor changed room 2n to 600% rout the influent flow rate, the nitrogen removal rate increased from about 70 to 90% at a loading rate of 0.4 kgT-N m-s d-1. The initial increase of transmembrane pressure (TMP) was observed after a 4-month operation while maintaining the flux and MLSS concentration at 7-9 1 $m^2$$h^{-1}$ and 6,000-14,000 mg $1^{-1}$, respectively. The TMP could be maintained below 15 cmHg for an 8-month operation. The chemical cleaning with an acid followed by an immersion in an alkali solution gave better cleaning result with the membrane operated for 10 month rather than that only by an alkali immersion.
