  • A biological assessment of water quality was made at 9 sites of the Joyang-river and inflow streams located in Jeongseon-gun Gangwon-do, from June 2008 to September 2010. The investigation consisted of physico-chemical factors, biomass, and standing crops of epilithic diatoms. In addition, the community structure of epilithic diatoms was analyzed, and the water quality was assessed using DAIpo and TDI. The pH varied from 7.4~10.2 which is attributed to the Joyang-river area consisting of limestone. A total of 117 taxonomic groups of epilithic diatoms, including: 2 orders, 6 families, 23 genera, 95 species, 15 varieties, 2 forms, and 5 unidentified species, were found in the Joyang-river. 11 taxa, including Achnanthes laterostrata and Cymbella delicatula which live in neutral to alkali pH, were found. An indicator species of alkali waters, Cymbella delicatula, was routinely observed to have a relative frequency of over 10% in I3 and I4. In the result of the biological assessment using DAIpo, the Joyang-river was rated class A, with an average of 77.03 and inflow streams were rated class B with an average of 65.84. As for the results of TDI analysis, the Joyangriver was rated class A~B, and inflow streams were rated class A~D. Accordingly, the water quality of the Joyang-river was determined to be superior to that of inflow streams. Although the main stream showed low water quality at sites J2 and J3, correlating with a reduction in the quality of inflow stream, I1 in September 2009.

  • Marine benthic diatoms and environmental factors were studied at 60 sites on the Mangyung-Dongjin tidal flat of the west coast of Korea. Sediment samples were taken quantitatively from the upper 5 mm layer to obtain a representative estimate of the epipelic and epipsammic cell concentration. Surface sediments taken simultaneously with the quantitative diatom samples were analysed for the grain size. Exposure duration of study sites were calculated by the tide data recorded at Kunsan Outer-Harbour. Coarse sediments dominated mainly on the offshore coastal and lower tidal flat, whereas fine sediments occurred on inner and higher tidal flat. Total 371 diatom taxa were collected and the genera represented by a great number were Navicula and Nizschia. The 16 abundant species occupying more than 1% of total cell number are of the following: Paralia sulcata, Navicula sp. 1, Navicula arenaria, Cymatosira belgica, Amplora holsatica, Amphora coffeaeformis, Achnanthes hauckiana, Rhaphoneis amphiceros, Thalassionema nitzschioides. Navicula sp. 2, Dimeregramma minor, Amphora sp. 1, Cyclotella atomus, C, striata, Nitzschia kuetzingiana, Stephanodiscus sp. 1. The distribution pattern of these dominant species are described in relation to the habitat condition. Most of these species showed high densities in fine sediments. However, they occurred even silty sand and sandy sediments in low abundance. The epipsammic forms belonging to the Araphidineae and Monoraphidineae were restricted on the lower tidal flat. The typical species found in coarse sediments were: Cocconeis sp. 1, Opephora martyi, Amphora sabyii, Dimeregramma minor var. nana, Fragilaria virescens var. oblongella, F. virescens, Cocconeis grata. The higher tidal flat consisting of fine sediments showed relatively higher cell numbers than the lower tidal flat. River mouth region was the highest in abundance.

  • This research was to examine the biological pollution class by color of the polluted section and calculate the biological pollution coverages of 9 stone heritages in Korea, from June to November 2008. Three storied stone pagoda in Mulgeol-ri, Hongcheon, Three storied stone pagoda in Suta Temple and Stupa to Hongudang in Sutasa Temple showed 90% biological pollution coverage and each stone cultural heritages showed 15~23% range of Bryophyte coverage, proving severe biological pollution. The Four-lion three storied stone pagoda of Gwaeseok-ri, Three storied stone pagoda in Suta Temple and Stupa to Hongudang in Sutasa Temple showed the worst biological pollution class by color of class 5. Three storied stone pagoda in Chang-ri showed satisfactory level of class 2. The result of the correlation analysis between biological pollution class and the biological pollution coverage of lichen showed high correlation coefficient of 0.91, however, the correlation analysis between biological pollution class and bryophyte or aerial algae coverage showed the low correlation coefficient. Eight taxa among all the aerial algae, Cosmarium decedens, Chlorella ellipsoidea, Anabaena fertilissima, Botryococcus braunii, Chroococcus turgidus, Navicula cryptocephala and Xenococcus acervatus showed high correlation coefficient of 0.56~0.85 with biological pollution coverage of bryophyte, in the correlation analysis. The correlation coefficient between biological pollution coverage of lichen, Trebouxia sp. and Chroococcus varius, had a range between 0.43 to 0.50. The correlation coefficient between biological pollution coverage of aerial algae, Achnanthes laterostrata and Ulothrix zonata showed a range of 0.57 to 0.76. Since the aerial algae with high correlation between biological pollution coverage showed clear appearance tendency, they can be used as indicator.

  • To evaluate the biological integrity of aquatic ecosystems, we developed Korean multimetric diatom index (KMDI) using metrics that many researchers have been previously described, and compared to single-metric diatom index such as trophic diatom index (TDI) and diatom assemblage index to organic pollution (DAIpo). For the biological and environmental data, we investigated the epilithic diatoms, water quality and the land-use for 923 sites in Korean streams between 2013-2017, and estuaries between 2010-2017, respectively. Five appropriate metrics were selected according to the following steps; 1) extraction of 300 potential metrics (biological, chemical, physical, and geographical) based on previous references, of these, 2) 46 samples having high separation power were selected, 3) the selected metrics were each tested for variability, redundancy, and sensitivity to the environments, finally 4) construction of multi-metric diatom index comprising single type metrics such as TDI, DAIpo, % motile diatoms, % Achnanthes / (Achnanthes+Navicula), and % number of Gomphonema species. The biological integrity of the 233 sites from the Geum River basin were independently investigated using KMDI. Collectively, the new KMDI showed high sensitivity and explanatory power for environmental factors such as land-use, biochemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and electric conductivity. However, it had slightly higher biological integrity for the same sites as compared to single type diatom metrics. Finally, more data accumulation from all over Korea and the development of acceptable diatom metrics were required.

  • Seasonal changes of the phytoplankton community was investigated from July 2000 to April 2001 at five stations in the Imjin River. A total of phytoplankton were composed of 193 taxa, belonging to 5 divisions, 145 species, 28 varieties, 1 form, 19 unidenfitied species. Of those, the diatoms and green algae were present during the investigation periods more frequently than the other taxa. The phytoplankton standing crops varied from $89{\times}10^3\;cells/l$ at station 1 in October 2000 to $8,825{\times}10^3\;cells/l$ at station 3 in April 2001. Throughout the investigation periods, at station 1, there was low in the size of phytoplankton standing crops at large. Otherwise, at station 2, staion 3 and station 4, we could see the maximum of phytoplankton standing crops in July 2000 and then phytoplankton standing crops decreased and it reached to the minimum in January 2001, and after then, it increased again. But exceptionally, we could see the maximum of phytoplankton standing crops in April at station 3. And also, at staion 5, we could see the similar variation pattern of phytoplankton standing crops at station 2, station 3 and station 4 with a little differences in seasonal variation pattern of phytofllankton standing crops. The major dominant species were Achnanthes minutissima, Anabaena sp., Aulacoseira ambigua, A. granulata, A. granulata v. angustissima, Cymbella affinis, Cylindrotheca closterium, Diatoma vulgare, Merismopedia glauca, Stephanodiscus hantzschiif. tenuis.

  • Epilithic diatom communities and water quality were monitored to evaluate the ecological impact of the inflow of Wonju-stream passing through the urban area in the Seom River Watershed. We selected the 14 sampling stations (5 main stream sites and 9 tributary sites), and collected diatom and water samples between October 2007 and September 2008, on the seasonal basis. The results indicate that most water quality parameters showed the site-specific patterns over the study, except for water temperature and dissolved oxygen. The levels of water quality parameters were highest at the site of Wonju stream, whereas the lowest in the upstream sites, and intermediate or gradually decreased in the downstream sites of the Seom river. One species, Achnanthes convergens, showed the highest biomass and frequency over the sites, while three saprophilous species-Navicula goeppertiana, Navicula subminuscula, Nitzschia palea were appeared only in Wonju Stream and other polluted sites. According to trophic diatom index (TDI) values, which were highly correlated with nutrients and EC, the study sites were classified into three classes: upstream and tributary (Class A and B), Wonju Stream (Class D), and mixed zone and downstream (Class C). A cluster analysis supported the result of TDI classification. Therefore, Wonju-stream located in populated urban area exerted the adverse ecological effects on the epilithic diatom community and water quality of the lower Seom River System, although its severity gradually decreased downstream.

  • In order to assess the water quality of Kumho river using Diatom Assemblage Index to organic water pollution (DAIpo) and to campare from the previous water quality, 5 sites in Kumho river were selected and assessed total of 6 times, every April and September from April 2010 to September 2012. As a result, 116 taxa were found in 2 Order, 3 Suborder, 7 Families, 26 Genera, 103 species and 13 varieties. Saprophilous species of 10 dominant species including Achnanthes minutissima, were increased as going to downstream sites. Correlation coefficients (r) between epilithic diatom communities and physicochemical factors were from - 0.62 to 0.71. Correlation coefficients (r) between TN and diatom indices (DAIpo, TDI) were 0.57 and 0.65, respectively. Therefore, epilithic diatom communities were greatly influenced by TN. The Correlation between DAIpo and TDI measured to be high in correlation coefficient (r=0.62) from the result of correlation analysis. Mean of DAIpo values ranged between 37.24~74.98 and decreased as going to downstream sites. Saprobic level was estimated as ${\beta}$-oligosaprobic at st. 1, ${\alpha}$-oligosaprobic at st. 2 and ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic at st. 3. But st. 4 and 5 which were ${\alpha}$-mesosaprobic and polysaprobic in the previous results, were improved as ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic. The RPId, general assessment of the water quality using DAIpo, was 52.27, which means the water quality of Kumho river was middle level.

  • The urbanization is altering the hydrology, water quality, channel form of waterway and changing the composition of biological communities in the aquatic ecosystem. Recently, towns grew bigger by the drift of large numbers of people and the medium and small leather and dyeing industries around the Pocheon and Youngpyeong streams. The discharges of sewage were increased by them. The UII (urban intensity index) was 85 (st. P-3) and 91 (st. P-6) in the Pocheon stream and about 20 in the Youngpyeong stream. A total 141 taxa of epilithic diatoms which were composed of 2 order, 8 family, 30 genera. Dominant species were Navicula saprophila, N. subminuscula, Nitzschia palea, Gomphonema pseudoaugur in the Pocheon stream and Achnanthes alteragracillima, A. convergens, A. minutissima, N. minima, N. fonticola, N. frustulum and Cymbella minuta var. silesiaca in the Youngpyeong stream. It Showed the different composition of dominant species by the urbanization near two streams. In the relationships between UII and environmental factors such as EC, BOD, COD, TN, TP and DAIpo, UII showed the high relations $(r^2>0.8)$. It was the difference of organic pollution according to urbanization. It therefore, was higher the relative abundance and more the numbers of saprophilous taxa in the Pocheon stream than the Youngpyeong stream. The water quality of two streams by biological indicators(DAIpo) was polysaprobic state(st. P-3, P-4, P-5) in the Pocheon stream and was oligosaprobic (Y-1), mesosaprobic (Y-2, 3) and polysaprobic state (Y-4) in the Youngpyeong stream during the investigation periods.
