  • Korean bitterling Acanthorhodeus gracilis Regan, 1908 is very similar to Acheilognathus chankaensis (Dybowski, 1872) having 12~14 dorsal fin rays, 10~11 anal fin rays and 35~36 lateral line scales. By analyzing these specimens and original descriptions, diagnostic characteristics of the genus Acanthorhodeus were included in the genus Acheilognathus and Acanthorhodeus gracilis was defined as a junior synonym of Acheilognathus chankaensis. The provisional keys are provided for identifying the nine species of Acheilognathus from Korea.

  • This study was conducted to identify taxonomic differences in the characteristics of Acheilognathus majusculus and A. yamatsutae during their initial life history via an interspecific hybridization experiment. Hatching time required 36 h for MY and 49 h for YM at 21.5℃, showing a significant difference of 13 h between the hybrids. The hatching rates of the cross-bred eggs were 30% for cross MY (A. majusculus♀×A. yamatsutae♂) and 40% for cross YM (A. yamatsutae♀×A. majusculus♂). The hatching larvae size was total length 3.13-3.43 mm in MY and total length 3.89-4.22 mm in YM, which was larger in YM. The hybridization test between A. yamatsutae and A. majusculus that live in the same water stream confirmed that no interspecific reproductive isolation occurred.

  • A new bitterling, Acheilognathus majusculus is described from 20 specimens collected from the Somjin and Nakdong River, Korea. The new species is similar to Acheilognathus yamatsutae, but distinguished from the latter and congeners by the combination of the following characteristics: 15-21 gill rakers, 37-40 vertebrae, longer barbel, greenish body coloration, nuptial color of males and slightly protrusive snout. A key to species of Acheilognathus from Korea is included.

  • Anew species of cyprinid fish Acheilognathus koreensis is described from specimens collected in several rivers of southern part of Korea. In general aspect it is similar to A. liηzbata but differs form this by having large snout length, narrow interorbital width and characters of early developmental stage. The new species is distinguished from A. signifer by color parttern of dorsal and anal fin ray in male, and egg form and ovipositor length in female.

  • In order to resolve the taxonomic contusion of Acheilognathus limbata from Korea, 17 morphological characters, egg form and cleavage part of A. limbata from Japan and Korea were ompared. These two groups are overlapping each other in morphometric characters mostly, but two characters of snout length and interarbital width percent in head length are distinguished between them. Moreover the Korean and the Japanese specimens are significantly different from each other based on the egg form and, cleavage part of egg. These results indicate that A. limbata from Korea and from Japan are homonyms. So we consider that the target specimens from Korea should be treated Acheifognathus sp. rather than Acheilognathus limbata until further informations are available.

  • The bitterling, Acheilognathus koreensis spermatozoon has been examined by electron microscopy. The epididymal spermatozoa of A. koreensis are representing typical characteristic of cyprinid spermatozoa including the lateral insertion of flagellum, the organization of centriolar complex in shallow nuclear fossa and the asymmetrical arrangement of mitochondria. The sperm mid-piece contains a large mitochondrion characteristic enclosed by membranous vesicles. The mitochondria aspect is different from that of other cyprinid spermatozoa, which their mitochondria have a conventional aspect and never fuse to form a mitochondrial derivative. In term of sperm evolution, the fused mitochondria are regarded as the apomorphic character in comparison with the separate mitochondria. The single mitochondrion is not found in cyprinid spermatozoon except for Rodeus and Pungtungia.

  • A intergeneric hybrid between Rhodeus uyekii and Acheilognathus signifer was collected in the Jojongcheon Bukhan River. The hybrid showed intermediate characteristics of two parental types in some key characters, such as color pattern of body, pigmentation of dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, and body spot and stripe. In addition, the hybrid had a fairly large number of lateral line scales, while it lacked a barbel, which is known as a key intergeneric character. The probable occurrence of a natural hybrid is supported by a viable $F_1$ hybrid produced with the parental species.

  • The spawning condition was investigated of the bitterling, Acheilognathus yamatsutae Mori in aquariums. Sexual responses in male and female bitterlings were very sensitive to the mussel rather than the other sex. But spawning behavior was shown ouly when all of the male, the female and the mussel were present. And the sexual response was not shown at all when there was no direct contact with the live mussel.

  • A new speices of cyprinid fish, Acheilognathus somjinensis is described based on the specimens collected in the Somjin River, Sinpyong-myon, Imsil -gun , Chollabuk-do province of Korea. In general morphology it is similar to A. koreensis. however, the new speices differs from the latter in having longer ovipositor of female in spawing season and showing pear-shaped eggs. In hybridization experiments, it was found that A.somjinensis is repoductively isolated from A.koreensis.

  • This study was conducted to identify the taxonomic differences in the characteristics of Rhodeus ocellatus and Acheilognathus yamatsutae during their early life history via an interspecific hybridization experiment. Results showed that the hatching rates of the cross-bred eggs were 60% for cross OY (R. ocellatus ♀×A. yamatsutae ♂) and 70% for cross YO (A. yamatsutae ♀×R. ocellatus ♂). The dorsal fin rays of YO were similar to those of R. ocellatus. The hybridization test of A. yamatsutae and R. ocellatus living in the same water stream revealed that no interspecies reproductive isolation occurred. OY and YO showed similar maternal and paternal characteristic. The juvenile of OY did not resemble both paternal and maternal fin rays, indicating a difference. The hatching larvae of the hybrids showed the morphological characteristics of their parents but varied in terms of the shapes of their parts.
