The choice of solvents for electrolytes solutions is very important to improve the characteristics of charge/discharge in the Li-ion battery system. Such solvent systems have been widely investigated as electrolytes for Li-ion batteries. In this paper, the electrochemical properties of the solid electrolyte interphase film formed on carbon anode surface and the solvent decomposition voltage in 1 M LiPF6/EC:MA(x:y) electrolyte solutions prepared from the various mixing volume ratios are investigated by chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy. As a result, the solvent decomposition voltages are varied with the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte. Electrochemical properties of the passivation film were different, which are dependent on the mixture ratio of the solvents. Therefore, the most appropriate mixing ratio of EC and MA as a solvent in 1 M $LiPF_6/(EC+MA)$ system for Li-ion battery is approximately 1:3 (EC:MA, volume ratio).
The splicing activity of T4 phage td intron RNA has been examined with various Mg$^{2+}$ ions such as MGCl$_{2}$, MgS $O_{4}$ and magnesium acetate using various splicing conditions such as different incubation time and temperature. The maximum splicing of td intron RNA occurred at the concentration of 5 mM MgCl$_{2}$. Raising the Mg$^{2+}$ concentration up to 15 mM appeared to promote P2 delection mutant to overcome the loss of some splicing activity. In both wild type and mutant, a complete hydrolysis of RNA occurred at 30 mM MgCI$_{2}$ MgS $O_{4}$ and magnesium acetate exhibited the rate and pattern of RNA splicing identical to MGCI$_{2}$. The optimal splicing conditions involve the incubation of RNA with 5 mM MgCI$_{2}$ at 58 .deg.C for 15 min. The results suggest that Mg$^{2+}$ may play a key role in the catalytic mechanism of td intron RNA.n RNA.

The concentrations of ten inorganic (sodium, chloride, sulfate, ammonia, etc.) and three organic (acetate, formate, and MSA) ions associated with airborne particulate matter were measured from Cheju Island, Korea during the three field intensive campaigns conducted in (1) Sept./oct. 1997 (fall), (2) Dec. 1997 (winter), and (3) April 1998 (spring). The results of our measurements indicated that the concentration levels of most ionic species were decreasing significantly across the three experimental periods. The patterns of concentration reduction were clear as the sum of all cation and anion species changed dramatically across those periods such as 294> 144 > 65 and 193 >96>74 nequiv/m3, respectively. The changes were best explained in terms of the wind rose patterns of the study site. Since our sampling spot is located on the western-end point of Cheju Island, it is likely to reflect the effects of diverse sources such as natural, marine processes during NW and local non-maritime ones during SE winds. .Hence, the periodical changes in ionic concentrations may be accounted for by the comparable changes in wind direction. To further investigate environmental characteristics of these ionic components, correlation analysis was conducted not only between meteorological and ion data but between different ion-pairs. The results of these analyses confirm that the concentration levels of ionic species are strongly affected by wind speed and temperature and that there are certain patterns between ion species to which such effects apply. In light of the significance of the wind rose patterns in the area, we further extended these analyses into four data groups that were divided on the basis of wind direction. The results of these analyses showed that the strength of correlations between important pairs (e.g.:. between windspeed and most of major inorganic species including sodium and chloride) can be ranked on the distribution of major ions are very diverse, depending on data grouping scheme for such analysis. The results of this study thus suggest that environmental behavior of chemical components be analyzed in various respects, rather than simple standard, especially if measurements are made in complex environmental condition under which both natural and anthropogenic effects are competing each other.
Dipsaci Radix (Dipsacaceae) has been used as a tonic, an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-complement agents in traditional herbal medicine for the therapy of low back pain, knee pain, rheumatic arthritis, traumatic hematoma, and bone fractures. A high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometric method (HPLC-ESI-MS) was developed for the simultaneous quantitation method of the five compounds from the herbal drug: asperosaponin VI and asperosaponin XII (terpene glycosides), sweroside, loganin and dipsacus A(iridoid glycosides). HPLC separation of the analytes was achieved on a C18 column ($150{\times}2.0$ mm i.d., 5 ${\mu}m$) using the aqueous methanol containing 5 mM ammonium acetate with gradient flow of the mobile phase. Detection of the analytes was performed by positive ion electrospray ionization, and selected ion monitoring was used for data acquisition using m/z corresponding molecular adduct ion, $[M+NH_4]^+$ and $[M+H]^+$. Calibration graphs showed good linearity ($r^2$=0.9997) over the wide range of the analytes; intra- and inter-day precisions (RSD, %) were within 9.1% and the accuracy between 94.0-111.0%. Recoveries of the analytes through the assay procedure were in the range of 93.7-110.8%. Analytical results of the herbal drugs of Dipsaci Radix (17 samples) show wide distribution of the five marker compounds and clear difference of the species from Phlomidis Radix (4 samples). The developed method would provide a practical guide for the quality control of the herbal drug.
Further elucidation of the mechanism of halothane's negative inotropic action has resulted from a study of the effect of various substrates on halothane-depressed rat atria. Approximately 6 mg% halothane was required to maintain a 50% depression of the contractility of rat atria suspended in a modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate glucose medium, pH 7.4, $30^{\circ}C$ for 2hr. Both lactate and acetate were found to restore partially the contractility of halothane-depressed atria. The maximally effective concentration of lactate was 5 mM; for acetate it was 2.5mM. Neither 5 nor 20 mM of additional glucose was effective in restoring the force of contraction of halothane-depressed atria. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that halothane exerts at least a part of its negative inotropic effect on rat atria by inhibiting either the uptake or utilization of glucose by the myocardium. The site of blockade must be prior to the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA. In our previous report dealing with the mechanism of cardiac depressant action of inhalation anesthetic halothane, it has been demonstrated that: 1) approximately 6 mg/100 ml halothane is required to maintain 50% depression of the force of contraction of isolated rat atria in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate glucose medium; 2) pyruvate partially restores the contractility of halothane-depressed atria, but has no effect on normal atria; the partial recovery of depressed atria by the addition of sodium pyruvate is due to the effect of the pyruvate ion itself, not to the sodium ion; 4) addition of pyruvate, to atria depressed with hypertonic medium, produced only further depression. From these findings we concluded that the cardiac depressant action of halothane on rat atria is a manifestation of inhibition of glucose uptake or utilization. The present studies were undertaken to observe the effect of other substrates on halothane-depressed atria in order to substantiate our conclusion. As with the case of pyruvate, lactate and acetate also partially restored the force of contraction of halothane-depressed atria. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that halothane inhibits glucose uptake or utilization in the glycolytic cycle of the myocardium.
For selectively permeable membrane based on cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) with water vapor transportability and DMMP protective performance, we intended to improve protective performance of the membrane against CEES using several additives. Results showed that CAB/PEI membranes possessed performance with good water vapor permeation (${\geq}1,800g/m^2/day$) and enhanced protective capability against CEES contamination ($7.1{\sim}11.5{\mu}g/cm^2{\cdot}day$). Of these membranes, the membrane containing $Ag^+$ ion and ionic exchange resin showed the best protective performance. And, we identified that the CAB/PEI membranes show excellent protection against aerosols with various particle sizes ($0.005{\sim}3{\mu}m$) simulating biological agents.
A method based on ethyl acetate extraction and gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was developed for determining tetraconazole residues in fruits and vegetables. A 10 g homogenized sample was mixed with 10 mL ethyl acetate, shaken vigorously for 3 min, stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 15 min, and then vortexed vigorously for 1 min; 1 g NaCl and 4 g anhydrous $MgSO_4$ were added. The clean-up was carried out by applying dispersive solid-phase with 150 mg $MgSO_4$and 50 mg primary secondary amine. Three precursor product ion transitions for tetraconazole were measured and evaluated to provide the maximum degree of confidence. Average recoveries in fruits and vegetables at three levels (0.005, 0.05 and 0.5 mg/kg) ranged from 85.53% to 110.66% with relative standard deviations ($RSD_r$) from 1.3% to 17.5%. The LODs ranged from 0.002 to 0.004 ${\mu}g$/kg, and LOQs ranged from 0.006 to 0.012 ${\mu}g$/kg. This method was also applied to determine tetraconazole residue in cucumber dissipation experiment under field conditions. The half-lives of tetraconazole in cucumber were in the range of 2.1-3.1 days.

Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)/clay nanocomposites were synthesized by blending a solution of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer containing 12% vinyl acetate abbreviated as EVA-12 in toluene and dispersion of dodecyl ammonium ion intercalated montmorillonite (l2Me-MMT) in N,N-dimethyl acetamide (DMAc). X-ray patterns of sodium montmorillonite ($Na^+$-MMT) and 12Me-MMT exhibited $d_{001}$ peak at $2{\theta}=7.4^{\circ}$ and $2{\theta}=5.6^{\circ}$ respectively; that is, the interlayer spacing of MMT increased by about 0.39 nm due to intercalation of dodecyl ammonium ions. The XRD trace of EVA showed no peak in the angular range of $3-10^{\circ}(2{\theta})$. In the XRD patterns of EVA/clay hybrids with clay content up to 6 wt% the basal reflection peak of 12Me-MMT was absent. leading to the formation of delaminated configuration of the composites. When the 12Me-MMT content was 8 wt% in the EVA-12 matrix, the hybrid revealed a peak at about $2{\theta}=5.6^{\circ}$, owing to the aggregation of aluminosilicate layers. Transmission electron microscopic photograph exhibited that an average size of 12-15 nm clay layers were randomly and homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix, which led to the formation of nanocomposite with delaminated configuration. The formation of delaminated nanocomposites was manifested through the enhancement of mechanical properties and thermal stability, e.g. tensile strength of an hybrid containing only 2 wt% 12Me-MMT was enhanced by about 36% as compared with neat EVA-12.
Black pine barks from the southern region of Korea were extracted using pressurized hot water and the water soluble extracts were then separated in a stepwise fashion using a variety of solvents, column chromatography (CC), thin layer chromatography (TLC), and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The antioxidant activities of each fraction and the active compounds were determined based on the radical scavenging activities of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), reductive potential of ferric ion, and total phenol contents. A DPPH test showed that the half maximal effective concentration ($EC_{50}$ value : $6.59{\pm}0.31\;{\mu}g/mL$) of the ethyl acetate fraction (ca. 0.67%) was almost the same as that of the control compounds and inversely proportional to the value of the total phenol contents. The cell viability of the water extracts was confirmed by methyl thiazol-2-yl-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) with enzyme linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA). Catechin, epicatechin, quercetin and ferulic acid were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction as active compounds and identified by nuclear magnetic resonance. The antioxidant activity as value of DPPH of each of the separated compounds was lower than the ethyl acetate fraction, and ferulic acid was the lowest among these compounds.
It has been well known that the intracellular calcium concentration $([Ca^{2+}]_i)$ in living cell is very sensitive to live or to survive, but the transmembrane system of calcium ion, especially mechanism of calcium ion movement in unexcitable state has been little elucidated. Though many proposed theories for calcium ion transport have been reported, it is still unclear that how could the sustained maintenance in cytosolic calcium level be done in cell. Since one of possible mechanisms of calcium transport may be related to the acetylcholine receptor-linked calcium channel, author performed experiment to elucidate this mechanism of calcium influx related to cholinergic receptor in ml muscarinic receptor-transfected RBL-2H3 cell-line. 1) The effects of carbachol both on calcium ion influx and on the secretion of hexosaminidase were respectively observed in the manner of time-related or concentration-dependent pattern in this model. 2) The effects of several metal cations on calcium transport were shown in carbachol-induced cell-line. 3) Atropine was administered to examine the relationship between cholinergic receptor and calcium ion influx in this model. 4) PMA (Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate) or PTx (Pertussis toxin) was respectively administered to examine the secondary mediator which involved pathway of calcium ion movement in carbachol-induced cell-line. The results of this experiments were as follows; 1) Carbachol significantly stimulated both the calcium influx and the secretion of hexosaminidase in the manner of the concentration-dependent pattern. 2) Atropine potently blocked the effects of carbachol in concentration-response manner. 3) Administered metal cations inhibited the calcium influx in carbachol-stimulated this model to the concentration-related pattern. 4) PMA did not inhibit carbachol-induced secretion of hexosaminidase, but blocked the calcium influx in this cell-line. 5) The suppression of carbachol-induced hexosaminidase secretion was shown in PTx-treated cell -line.
