Short-term effect of phosphogypsum on soil properties including acidification, salinity and metal availability were investigated under laboratory and field conditions. Phosphogypsum and mixtures of phosphogypsum and compost were added to soil and incubated in a laboratory condition with 15% moisture content. Phosphogypsum treatments were 2.5 and 5.0 g/kg soil and in the treatments of phosphogypsum and compost mixture 10 g of compost was added additionally. After the 30 days of incubation, an additional phosphogypsum and/or compost were added to the remaining soils at the same rates of the first treatments. pH, electrical conductivity, and available hazardous elements were measured periodically during the incubation. Field experiment was conducted in a plastic film house of mellon with four treatments of phosphogypsum and compost mixtures - 25+125, 50+125, 50+250 and 100+250 kg/165 $m^2$. pH, electrical conductivity, and hazardous elements in soil and total hazardous elements in leaf were measured. In the laboratory experiment, after 30 days of the first phosphogypsum application, soil pHs were lowered by 0.7-0.8 units. After the second treatment of phosphogypsum 0.2 units of additional acidification occurred. However, acidification was not observed in the soils treated with mixtures of phosphogypsum and compost. In the laboratory experiment, phosphogypsum treatments increased electrical conductivity very significantly. In field experiment, pH and electrical conductivity of soils treated with phosphogypsum were nearly the same as those of soil not treated with phosphogypsum. Since soil condition in the field study was an open system, the free acids and salts derived from phosphogypsum could be diffused down with water leaching through the soil profile and then any significant acidification or salt accumulation in the topsoil could not be observed. In both laboratory and field experiments, levels of available hazardous elements in soils treated with phosphogypsum were quite low and not different from the levels found in the control soil. Results obtained from this study suggest that application of phosphogypsum at appropriate rates on agricultural land appears of no concern in terms of acidity, salinity and hazardous element content of soil.
A survey was conducted to investigate the chemical properties of soils such as pH, electrical conductivity, total organic matter content, soluble nitrate, available phosphate and major exchangeable canons, in plastic film houses at 513 sites. All the parameters surveyed in the plastic film house were much higher than those of open field soils. Particularly conspicuous was the accumulation of available P, exchangeable K and the occurrence of nitrate at relatively high concentration in both top soil(0-20 cm) and sub-soil(20-40 cm). In 70-80% of cases, the contents of available P and exchangeable K in top soils, were found to be higher than optimum levels. There was positive linear correlation between the content of exchangeable rations, and nitrate and EC of soils. The correlation coefficient was greater in the order of nitrate-EC > Mg-nitrate > K-nitrate > Ca-nitrate. The successive cultivation of horticultural crops in the plastic houses tended result in the accumulation of available P, exchangeable K and total organic matter in the soil.
A review was made on the effect of organic matter application on the chemical characteristics of soils such as pH, solubilities of minerals, and cation exchange capacity mainly at flooded rice soils. The review can be summarized as follows: 1. Application of organic material such as rice straw and compost in flooded rice soil leads to a temporary lowering of soil pH at the earlier stage of soil reduction, due to the production of various organic acids and carbonic acid. This temporary lowered pH is replaced with the production of alkaline substances such as ammonia as the reduction of soil proceeds. 2. Incorporation of organic materials intensifies the ferrous iron, dissolving various minerals, virtually to the increase in electrical conductivity of soils. 3. Organic materials also play an important role in dissolving soil minerals through the production of various chelating agents. 4. Application of soil organic matter significantly increases cation exchange capacity of soils. 5. Continuous application of rice straw or compost leads to the increase in soil organic matter content to some extent, up to the level of equilibrium. In soils low in organic matter the equilibrium level is attained with five years continuous application of compost. 6. The manner of chemical fertilizer application influences the accumulation of organic matter applied in soils. Low levels of fertilization lowers the accumulation while high levels of fertilization accerelates the accumulation.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of light intensity and electrical conductivity (EC) of nutrient solution during short day treatment in an ebb and flow systems on the growth and nutrient uptake of potted Kalanchoe blossfeldiana 'Rako' and the nutrient accumulation of growing medium. Nutrient concentrations in the growing medium were also analyzed to investigate the accumulation rates of macro-nutrients such as T-N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. To achieve the objectives, plants were fed with a nutrient solution with 1.2, 1.8, or $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ under three daily photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of 4.26, 5.51, or $9.75mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. Both light intensity and EC of nutrient solution significantly influenced the crop growth. The elevation of PPFs resulted in the increase of plant growth. For each light condition, plant growth, such as dry and fresh weight and leaf area, was the highest when the electrical conductivity of nutrient solution was controlled to $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. However, growth was acceptable in the EC ranges from 1.8 to $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Both light intensity and EC of nutrient solution significantly influenced the uptake of nutrients in the solution tanks and the accumulation of nutrients in the growing medium. As the EC of nutrient solution was elevated, the absorption rates of $NO_3^-$, $PO_4^{-3}$, $K^+$, and $Mg^{2+}$ by crops and accumulation of those in growing medium increased, but the light intensity did not significantly influence the absorption rates. Based on the above results, the regression models were suggested for anticipating the macro-nutrient accumulations in growing medium.
Shihwa tidal freshwater marsh was constructed recently to treat pollutants entering Shihwa lake. In this study, we examined the spatial and temporal patterns of heavy metal accumulation in soils of Shihwa marsh and sought correlations between several soil variables (pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and acid ammonium oxalate-extractable Fe and Al contents) and the heavy metal concentration of soils. Surface soil samples (0∼20 cm) were collected in June 2000, November 2000, and July 2001, and were analyzed for heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, As, and Hg) and soil chemical properties. The neutral pH and water-saturated conditions of Shihwa marsh appeared to favor immobilization of heavy metal through adsorption onto soils. The concentrations of heavy metal (especially Zn, Cu, and Cr) in soils of Shihwa marsh increased along the sampling occasions, suggesting that soils of Shihwa marsh serve as a sink of heavy metal. Among the sub-marshes, metal concentrations were highest in Banweol high marshes and lowest in Samhwa marshes. The temporal and spatial variations in the heavy metal concentrations of soils were correlated positively with organic matter and oxalate extractable Fe and Al contents, but negatively with electrical conductivity. These results suggest that organic matter and hydrous oxide of Fe/Al may playa key role in removing heavy metals in soils of Shihwa marsh, and that heavy metal removing capacity would increase with desalinization. However, the removal patterns of heavy metal by reeds warrant further studies to evaluate the total removal capacity of heavy metals by Shihwa marsh.

Accumulated Phosphate can be released by ligand exchange reaction of organic acids. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of the organic acids on the availability of phosphate and the growth of crop in phosphate and salts accumulated soil. Soil samples were collected from farmer's plastic film house. Available phosphate and electrical conductivity of soil were $3,005mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $16.63mg\;kg^{-1}$ which were 6 and 8 times higher than the optimum range of soil for crop growth, respectively. Corns were cultivated in pots for 2 months. Treatments were no treatment (control), phosphate fertilizer (P), citric acid (CA) 1, 5, 10 mM, and oxalic acid (OA) 1, 5, 10 mM. Water soluble phosphorus, available phosphate, corn growth and uptake were determined after cultivation. Results showed that organic acids increased water soluble phosphorus and available phosphate. For the level of 10 mM, the order of effectiveness of organic acids for water soluble P was citric acid (44%) > oxalic acid (32%). Height and dry weight of corns were increased significantly by the treatment of citric acid 1 and 5 mM. Also, corn absorbed more phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, calcium and magnesium in the treatment of citric acid 1 mM than these of other treatments. Even though phosphate availability of soil was enhanced by addition of citric acid 10 mM, the growth of corns decreased because high concentration of citric acid caused salt damage by increasement of electrical conductivity. Thus, the citric acid of 1 mM has the potential to improve the availability of phosphate and the healthy growth of corns.
BACKGROUND: Salt accumulation in coastal reclaimed soil can decrease plant growth and productivity, which could lead to considerable variation of methane($CH_4$) emission in a rice paddy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of salt concentration on $CH_4$ emission in a coastal reclaimed soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effect of salt concentration on $CH_4$ emission and rice growth characteristics was studied by pot test, which packed by reclaimed paddy soils collected from Galsa, Hadong, Gyeongnam province. Electrical conductivity(EC) of each treatment was controlled by 0.98, 2.25, 5.05 and 9.48 dS/m and $CH_4$ emission was characterized a week interval by closed chamber method during rice cultivation. The $CH_4$ emission rate was significantly decreased with increase of salt accumulation, but total $CH_4$ flux in EC 5.50 dS/m treatment was lower than those of EC 9.48 dS/m treatment. It seems because of higher content of water soluble $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in EC 5.50 dS/m treatment than those of EC 9.48 dS/m treatment. Rice growth and grain yield were significantly decreased with increase of salt accumulation. Soil properties, especially EC and pH were negatively correlated with $CH_4$ flux, while rice growth characteristics like plant height and tiller number show significantly positive correlation with $CH_4$ flux. CONCLUSION(S): Conclusively, salt accumulation significantly decreased $CH_4$ flux in a rice paddy, which could be useful information for evaluating $CH_4$ flux in reclaimed area in Korea.
To investigate the salt accumulation in the plastic film house soils, bulk density, electrical conductivity(EC), exchangeable canons and water soluble anions were determined at different depths(0~60cm) in the salt-accumulated plastic film house soils in Yesan, Chungnam, Korea. Bulk density were increased from $1.2Mg/m^3$ to $1.5Mg/m^3$ as the depth changed from 0cm(top soil) to 30cm(subsoil) below the soil surface, whereas the bulk densities between 30cm to 60cm slightly decreased to $1.42Mg/m^3$. These changes of soil bulk densities might influence the porosity and pore size distribution, resulting in affecting the water flow throughout, soil layers. Electrical conductivity and Exchangeable sodium percentage(ESP) for 0 to 10cm soil layer were 5.08 dS/m and 6.4, respectively, while the EC was decreased to less than 1.63 dS/m in 20~30cm depth and about 0.7 dS/m. Salt accumulation patterns in the plastic film house soils might be influenced by the changes of the bulk densities in soil.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of intermittent plasma and electrolysis treatments on lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. oak-leaf.), nutrient solution components ($NO_3{^-}-N$, $NH_4{^+}-N$, $PO{_4}^{3-}-P$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$) and environmental parameters (electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and pH). The recirculating hydroponic cultivation system consisted of planting port, LED lamp, water reservoir and circulating pump. Nutrient solution was circulated in the following order: reservoir ${\rightarrow}$ filtration-plasma or filtration-electrolysis ${\rightarrow}$ planting port ${\rightarrow}$ reservoir. The results showed that nutrient solution components and environmental parameters were changed by plasma or electrolysis treatment. Lettuce growth was not affected by the intermittent plasma or electrolysis treatment with 30 minutes or 90 minutes, respectively. The roots of the lettuce was damaged by excessive plasma and electrolysis treatment. Electrolysis treatment had greater effect on than plasma treatment because of the accumulation of high levels of TRO (Total Residual Oxidants).
This research was conducted to determine the effect of fertilization programs on crop growth, nutrient uptake and yield of strawberry and salt accumulation in PE film house soil. To achieve these, experiments were conducted through two years with various fertilization program such as traditional fertilization(A), recommended fertilization of Rural development administration (B), Tochigi prefectural experiment station (C) and Nonsan strawberry experiment station (D), and control (E). In 1st year, statistical differences in growth characteristics were not observed among treatments except (E). Yield per 10 was the highest in (D) followed by (A), (B), (C) and (E) and there was the statistical difference between (D) and (E). In the 2nd year experiment, growth characteristics and yield showed similar trends to those of 1st year experiment. In the results of soil analysis of 2nd year, the soil pH of all treatments were in the acceptable range, while electrical conductivity of (A) and (D) were 2.36 and 2.19 %$dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively. After finishing of strawberry cultivation, nitrate concentration in soil solution of (A) and (D) were 74.6 and 65.0%$mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and Na in those were 3.71 and 3.53 $cmol+kg^{-1}$, respectively. Above results indicated that (A) and (D) were good fertilization program for strawberry cultivation, but those also resulted in accumulation of $NO_{3-}N$ and Na in PE house soil.
