Background : An excessive accumulation of neutrophils in lung tissue has been known to play an important role in mediating the tissue injury among the adult respiratory distress syndrome, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and cystic fibrosis by releasing toxic oxygen radicals and proteolytic enzymes. Therefore, it is important to understand a possible mechanism of neutrophil accumulation in lung tissue. In many species, exposure to hyperoxic stimuli can cause changes of lung tissues very similar to human adult respiratory distress syndrome and neutrophils are also functioning as the main effector cells in hyperoxic lung injury. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether neutrophils function as a key effector cell and to study the nature of possible neutrophil chemotactic factors found in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from the hyperoxia exposed rats. Methods : We exposed the rats to the more than 95% oxygen for 24, 48, 60 arid 72 hours and bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL) was performed. Neutrophil chemotactic activity was measured from the BAT- fluid of each experimental groups. We also evaluated the molecular weight of neutrophil chemotactic tractors using fast performance liquid chromatography and characterized the substances by dialyzer membrane and heat treatment. Results : 1) The neutrophil proportions in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid began to rise from 48 hours after oxygen exposure, and continued to be significantly increased with exposure times. 2) chemotactic index for neutrophils in lung lavages from rats exposed to hyperoxia was significantly higher in 48 hours group than in control group, and was significantly increased with exposure time. 3) No deaths occured until after 48 hours of exposure. However, mortality rates were increased to 33.3 % in 60 hours group and 81.3 % in 72 fours group. 4) Gel filtration using fast performance liquid chromatography disclosed two peaks of neutrophil chemotactic activity in molecular weight of 104,000 and 12,000 daltons. 5) Chemotactic indices of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were significantly deceased when bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was treated with heat ($56^{\circ}C$ for 30 min or $100^{\circ}C$ for 10 min) or dialyzed (dialyzer membrane molecular weight cut off : 12,000 daltons). Conclusion : These results suggested that the generation of neutrophil chemotactic factor and subsequent neutrophil influx into the lungs are playing an important roles in hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury. Neutrophil chemotactic factor in the lung lavage fluids consisted of several distinct components having different molecular weight and different physical characteristics.

In this study, monitoring method which is more economic and easier in maintenance comparing to existing monitoring system was scrutinized for application to sewer intercepting chamber of 10.2 ha basin area by estimating CSOs (Combined Sewer Overflows) quantity and quality with 2 rainfall events using electrical conductivity data and civil research model. The result showed that determination coefficient of flow estimation by EC (Electrical Conductivity) dilution ratio and observed data was over 0.86 for all cases and the accuracy of estimation was improved from 0.5 to 0.8 for determination coefficient ($R^2$) and from 54.1% to 68.5% for accumulation frequency of relative error by considering antecedent dry days and rainfall duration. CSOs water quality estimation results by civil research model showed that determination coefficients were 0.64~0.97 for BOD and 0.70~0.95 for SS.
Real-time measurements of fine particles from stack emission gases are necessary due to the needs of continuous environmental monitoring of PM10 and PM2.5. The porous tube dilutor using hot and cold dilutions was developed to measure fine particles without condensable particles from highly humid emission gases and compared to the commercialized ejector-type dilutor. Particle size distributions were measured at the emission gases from a diesel engine and a coal-fired boiler. The porous tube dilutor could successfully measure the accumulation mode particles including relatively large particles more than $3{\mu}m$ without nuclei particles, while the ejector dilutor detected some condensable particles and could not detect large particles. The porous tube dilutor could successfully remove the already condensed water droplet particles generated by a humidifier in a $30m^3$ chamber.
A new functional meaning has been given as natural resource to bamboo through reanalysis. Bamboo products contributed to creating added-value of pro-environment. In this study, a potential efficiency and vision of bamboo products and crafts are presented. As bamboo plywood and bamboo decorating paper were developed followed by academic and technological support, an activation of markets has been pursued and bamboo pattern tiles for new furniture was developed. Buckley's formocresol was first introduced as a pulp medicament in 1904, and since 1930, it has been the treatment of choice for primary molar pulpotomies. Formocresol has fixation effect of pulp tissue and high clinical success rate. But side effect such as displacement and loss of permanent successor, amelogenesis imperfecta, cyst formation, mutation by general absorption, possibility of cancer induction have been reported. Of those, dentigerous cyst can form in the periradicular region after formocresol pulpotomy caused by an alteration of the reduced enamel epithelium, which result in fluid accumulation between the epithelium and the tooth crown. The present case describes a 6-year-old girl who had accidentally discovered in the panoramic radiograph a single, well-defined, radioluscent area enclosing the second unerupted mandibular premolar. The second left primary molar had been pulpotomizied 3 year before. Surgical treatment was carried out, the primary molar was extracted and cystectomy was performed under local anesthesia. In the extracted second primary molar, formocresol cotton pellet was left in the pulp chamber. Histologic study confirmed the suspected diagnosis of dentigerous cyst. This report present a case of dentigerous cyst associated with inadequate formocresol pulpotomized deciduous molar.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii were electrofused and fermented in germaniumfortified nutrients to produce high-yield, organic germanium. The conditions for the preparation of protoplasts from both strains and for electrofusion were studied. The protoplasts of both cells formed long pearl chains and the cell membranes were lysed and fused through cellulase and high frequency voltage $(450{\sim}750V/128{\sim}512\;{\mu}sec)$. The fusants with the fastest growth were selected, and then characterized for their carbohydrate usage and tolerance to glucose and salts. The glucose tolerance of the fusants was better than that of S. cerevisiae and similar to that of Z. rouxii. The fusants appeared to have resistance to 12% NaCl. The cell size of the fusants was greater than that of the parental strains. The fusant cells contained more gemlanium than the parental cells did. The electrofusion of S. cerevisiae and Z. rouxii increased the cell capacity and accumulation of germanium in the yeasts. This method was proved to be effective to produce a high quantity of organic germanium.
Background: Anticholinesterase drug inhibits acetylcholinesterase(AChE), induce accumulation of acetylcholine(ACh) near cholinergic receptors and cholinergic stimulation. This experiment was performed to study the effects of anticholinesterase drugs on gastric motility and the effect of ethanol on anticholinesterase drug-induced motility change. Materials and Methods: After excision of stomach, $2{\times}10mm$ circular muscle strips were made, which were then fixed to the isolated muscle chamber. An isometric tension transducer was used to measure the contraction change of the gastric smooth muscle strips after drug addition. Results: Fenthion, an irreversible anticholinesterase drug, increased ACh induced contraction of gastric smooth muscle strips and PAM, a cholinesterase activator, antagonized this action. Physostigmine, a reversible anticholinesterase drug, also increased the ACh induced contraction. The gastric motility was decreased by PAM. Ethanol, which is known to induce smooth muscle relaxation, inhibited the increase of contraction by fenthion. Conclusion: These results indicate that irreversible and reversible anticholinesterase drugs increase gastric motility and antagonized by cholinesterase activating drugs. And when exposed to both ethanol and anticholinesterase drug, gastric motility was decreased by the smooth muscle relaxation effect by ethanol.

Salvia miltiorrhiza has been used for treating heart and liver disease. In the present study, the influences of temperature on photosynthetical capacity of S. miltiorrhiza under controlled cultivation environment using growth chamber were investigated because of providing information about growth and secondary metabolite synthesis. And effect of harvesting time on growth properties and constituents such as salvianolic acid B, cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I, tanshinone IIA were evaluated. Maximum photosynthesis rate ($5.102{\mu}mol\;CO2/m2/s$) and net apparent quantum yield ($0.147{\mu}mol\;CO2/m2/s$), stomatal conductance (0.035 mmol/m2/s) and water use efficiency ($7.108{\mu}mol\;CO2/mmol\;H2O$) was highest at $20^{\circ}C$. Results of chlorophyll fluorescence showed that elevated temperature had contributed to reduce a quantum yield and electron flux in photosystem. This result demonstrated that favorable temperature condition was determined at $20^{\circ}C$. Contents of salvianolic acid B, cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I and tanshinone IIA was highest in root sample harvested at 20 March, whereas growth and yield of S. miltiorrhiza had no significant differences with harvesting time. Therefore, this study shows that temperature play an important role in photosynthetic activity and harvesting time have influence upon accumulation of constituents in root of S. miltiorrhiza.
This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of supplemental UV-B application to the hardening phase of container-grown Betula platyphylla seedlings. The containerized seedlings were grown in a growth chamber for four months and then treated with UV-B(UV-$B_{BE}$$3.2KJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ and $5.2KJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$) radiation and water stress regime(irrigation in one week interval) for four weeks. The differences in growth and physiological responses of the seedlings before and after the treatments were analyzed. UV-B radiation and water stress reduced height growth and leaf dry mass accumulation of the seedlings. The root collar diameter growth was reduced by UV-B radiation but increased by water stress. The reduction in leaf dry weight by UV-B radiation and water stress reduced T/R ratio of the seedling. The reduction in T/R ratio was the most apparent by water stress. Chlorophyll index observed by a chlorophyll meter was the lowest in the $5.2KJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ of UV-B radiation, and those in the $3.2KJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ and water stress were similar. UV-B radiation and water stress reduced both water content in the seedlings and leaf water potential, and increased leaf osmatic pressure. The water content of leaves and shoots was reduced more rapidly by UV-B radiation than by water stress treatment. In conclusion, growth responses and physiological changes in water relation by supplemental UV-B radiation which was applied to the hardening phase of container-grown Betula platyphylla seedlings were similar results to the water stress treatment.

Background: Radon contributing about 42% of annual average dose, mainly comes from soil. In this paper, standard measurement procedures for soil radon exhalation rate are suggested and their measurement uncertainties are analyzed. Materials and Methods: We used accumulation method for estimating surface exhalation rate. The closed-loop measurement system was made up with a RAD7 detector and a surface chamber. Radon activity concentrations in the system were observed as a function of time, with data collection of 5 and 15-minute and the measurement time of 4 hours. Linear and exponential fittings were used to obtain radon exhalation rates from observed data. Standard deviations of measurement uncertainties for two approaches were estimated using usual propagation rules. Results and Discussion: The exhalation rates (E) from linear approach, with 30 minutes measurement time were $44.8-48.6mBq{\cdot}m^{-2} {\cdot}s^{-1}$ or $2.14-2.32atom{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ with relative measurement uncertainty of about 10%. The contributions of fitting parameter A, volume (V) and surface (S) to the estimated measurement uncertainty of E were 59.8%, 30.1% and 10.1%, in average respectively. In exponential fitting, at 3-hour measurement we had E ranged of $51.6-69.2mBq{\cdot}m^{-2} {\cdot}s^{-1}$ or $2.46-3.30atom{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ with about 15% relative uncertainty. Fitting with 4-hour measurement resulted E about $51.3-68.2mBq{\cdot}m^{-2} {\cdot}s^{-1}$ or $2.45-3.25atom{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ with 10% relative uncertainty. The uncertainty contributions in exponential approach were 75.1%, 13.4%, 8.7%, and 2.9% for total decay constant k, fitting parameter B, V, and S, respectively. Conclusion: In obtaining exhalation rates, the linear approach is easy to apply, but by saturation feature of radon concentrations, the slope tends to decrease away from the expected slope for extended measurement time. For linear approach, measurement time of 1-hour or less was suggested. For exponential approach, the obtained exhalation rates showed similar values for any measurement time, but measurement time of 3-hour or more was suggested for about 10% relative uncertainty.
