Oxyresveratrol (trans-2, 3', 4, 5'-tetrahydroxystilbene), found in many plants including grape, peanut and mulberry, is a phytoalexin, an antimicrobial and antioxidative substance that rapidly accumulates in areas infected by the pathogen. We examined the accumulation of oxyresveratrol in nine Morus alba L. cultivars with respect to storage time and temperature postharvest and infection with GRAS microorganisms. Among the nine cultivars, the Suwon cultivar showed the highest oxyresveratrol content (9.6-fold increase) postharvest, when stored at $30^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. The optimal temperature and postharvest storage time for oxyresveratrol accumulation was $30^{\circ}C$ and 6 days. When Ramulus mori was infected with five microorganisms, the accumulation of oxyresveratrol increased over 4-fold in response to B. coagulans infection. These results suggest that oxyresveratrol accumulation is influenced by storage temperature, storage time, Ramulus mori cultivars, and microbial attack. Therefore, postharvest storage for an appropriate time period at a suitable temperature might be a useful way to industrially produce Ramulus mori cultivars with high oxyresveratrol content.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the ability of I-131 labeled polyclonal human immunoglobulin to localize an infection. In our country, indium-111 labeled leukocyte or Tc-99m labeled IgG are not readily available because of compex, time-consuming procedure and cost. So we tried to localize infection with I-131 labeled IgG which could be easily prepared. Six rats, infected with staphylococcus aureus in a thigh muscle, received I-131 labeled IgG intravenously and I-131 labeled bovine serum albumin (BSA) were injected to other 5 infected rats. Scintigrams were made at 1, 4, 24, 48, 72 hour later. The radiopharmaceutical demonstrated significant accumulation at the site of infection. The accumulation of I-131 labeled IgG at the site of infection was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of I-131 labeled BSA at 48, 72 hour. Similar finding could be found at 24 hour imaging, but it was not significant statistically. Therefore it was found that vascular permeability alone could not account for the mode of action of I-131 labeled IgG and it was considered that specific binding played a role. In conclusion, focal sites of inflammation can be detected with I-131 labeled nonspecific human polyclonal IgG and it seems that this method can also be applied to localization of human infection.

To find out the buried age of the relict dune sediments, a luminescence dating bas conducted for a relict dune from the Sindu dunefield on the Taean Peninsula. It shows that the deposition of the dune sands at 3m depth began about 690$\sim$730 years ago. From 3m to l.5m depth, the lower part of the dune bas remained stable, but a relict dune deposit appear at 1.3m depth. This part yields an age of about 68 years. The two samples that were collected from the lower part of the dune at depths of the 1.5 m and 3.0 m below the surface show a net accumulation rate of around 0.75 cm/y which is relatively slow for a coastal dune. The chronology obtained in this study demonstrates that a significant amount of sediments has been replaced or remobilized in the area over the past 1000 years, and there was at least a soil formation process during the same time period. These suggest that a new approach is necessary to identify the formation age of the so-called paleo-dune at the Sind dunefield.
Objectives : Cheongnoemyeongsin-hwan (CNMSH) is a herb medicine to treat cognitive impairment. This study was investigated the effects of CNMSH on learning and memory impairment induced by cerebral hypoperfusion. Cerebral hypoperfusion was produced chronically by permanent bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) in rats. Methods : CNMSH was administered orally once a day (250 mg/kg) for 28 days starting at 4th week after the BCCAO. The acquisition of learning and the retention of memory were tested on 9th week after the BCCAO using the Morris water maze. In addition, effect of CNMSH on neuronal apoptosis and ${\beta}-amyloid$ accumulation in the hippocmapus was evaluated with immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. Results : 1. CNMSH and ChAL significantly shortened the escape latencies on the 2nd day of acquisition training trials. 2. ChAL significantly prolonged the swimming time spent in the target and peri-target zones and CNMSH also significantly prolonged the swimming time spent in the peri-target zone. 3. CNMSH and ChAL significantly increased the number of target heading in the retention test. 4. ChAL significantly shortened the time of the 1st target heading in the retention test, but CNMSH insignificantly shortened the time of that. 5. CNMSH and ChAL significantly increased the memory score in the retention test. 6. CNMSH and ChAL significantly attenuated the reduction of CA1 neurons, but insignificantly attenuated the reduction of CA1 thickness. 7. CNMSH and ChAL significantly attenuated the up-regulation of Bax expression in the CA1 of hippocampus. 8. CNMSH and ChAL significantly attenuated the up-regulation of cascapse-3 expression in the CA1 of hippocampus. 9. CNMSH and ChAL significantly attenuated the ${\beta}-amyloid$ accumulation in the CA1 of hippocampus. 10. CNMSH and ChAL significantly attenuated the up-regulation of APP expression in the CA1 of hippocampus. 11. CNMSH and ChAL significantly attenuated the up-regulation of BACE-1 expression in the CA1 of hippocampus. Conclusions : The results show that CNMSH attenuates neuronal apoptosis and ${\beta}-amyloid$ accumulation in the hippocampus and alleviates the impairment of learning and memory produced by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. These results suggest that CNMSH may be a beneficial medicinal herb to treat cognitive impairment associated with neurodegenerative diseases.
A long-term in situ observation was carried out in the Ice-valley at Milyang in order to explain the factors and processes associated with the summertime ice formation. The variation of temperature inside Ice-valley in relation with ice formation in summer time was found to depend on precipitation rate in spring and cold air sinking in autumn and winter. The rate of temperature rising tends to correspond to sensible heat release depending on the precipitation amount at the freezing location. The reason of the cold air accumulation in a talus in the Ice-valley is the cold air sinking over the surface of talus due to the occurrence of outside clod air mass and the accumulated cold air from autumn to spring flow outside at the bottom of talus. The out-flowing cold air can result in the ice formation in the hot summer.

Creep phenomenon at the scale of bone tissue (small specimens) is known to be present and demonstrated for low strains. Here creep is demonstrated on a pair of fresh-frozen human femurs at the organ level at high strains. Under a constant displacement applied on femur's head, surface strains at the upper neck location increase with time until fracture, that occurs within 7-13 seconds. The monotonic increase in strains provides evidence on damage accumulation in the interior (probably damage to the trabeculae) prior to final fracture, a fact that hints on probable damage of the trabecular bone that occurs prior to the catastrophic fracture of the cortical surface layer.
To know the extension effect of storage temperature on the pre-rigor period of plaice, Paratichthys olivaceus muscle, the relationship between early changes after death and temperature dependency was studied. Killed plaices instantly with spiking at the brain were stored at $-3^{\circ}C,\;0^{\circ}C,\;5^{\circ}C\;and\;10^{\circ}$ used in studying the changes in rigor Index, ATP and its related compounds, lactate contents and K-value. The most shortest onset time of rigor-mortis and full rigor was revealed in the sample stored at $-3^{\circ}C$ among the all samples, where rigor-mortis began at 4hrs after spiking and maximum tension was attained after 28hrs. However, in case of fresh plaice muscle stored at $10^{\circ}C$, the onset of rigor-mortis and full rigor were retarded to 14hrs and 52hrs after spiking. ATP in sample stored at $5^{\circ}C\;and\;10^{\circ}C$ were decomposed slowly than sample at $0^{\circ}C\;-3^{\circ}C $ and within 35hrs storage. The fastest rate and the maximum content of lactate accumulation were showed in sample stored at $-3^{\circ}$ among the all samples. The correlation coefficient(r) between the rate of rigor mortis and ATP breakdown, rigor mortis and lactate accumulation, and ATP breakdown and lactate accumulation were -0.981946, 0.965044, and -0.964728, respectively. Freshness of $-3^{\circ}C$ stored samples was maintained for the longest time compared with other stored samples. The times reached around $20\%$ of K-value were 240hrs for samples stored at $-3^{\circ}C,\;96hrs\;for\;0^{\circ}C\;samples,\;71hrs\;for\;5^{\circ}C\;samples,\;and\;22hrs\;for\;10^{\circ}C$ samples. Samples stored at $-3^{\circ}C,\;and\;0^{\circ}C$ were showed higher temperature dependency on rate of rigor-mortis, ATP breakdown, and lactate accumulation than $5^{\circ}C\;and\;10^{\circ}C$ stored samples, but those samples have a lower temperature dependency on K-value.
The purpose of this study is fatigue damage assessment for large sized casting parts (hub and mainframe) of the 3MW offshore wind turbine by computer simulation. Hub and mainframe durability assessment is necessary because wind turbine have to guarantee for 20 years. Fatigue life evaluation must be considered all of fatigue load conditions as the components are wind load transmission path. Palmgren-Miner linear damage accumulation hypothesis is applied for fatigue life estimation with stress-life approach. S-N curve for the spheroid graphite cast iron EN-GJS-400-18-LT is derived according to durability guidelines. Reduction factors were applied for survival probability, surface roughness, material quality and partial safety factor according to Germanischer Lloyd rules. To calculate fatigue damage, stress tensors, extracted from the unity load calculation from ANSYS is multiplied with time track of fatigue loads extracted from GH bladed. Damage accumulation is performed with all of fatigue load conditions at each finite element nodes. In this study maximum nodal damage value is under 1.0. casted parts are safe. All living organisms depend on soil and water for their sustained growth and development. In recent years, sustenance of life in these growth matrices has been adversely affected by the cumulative increase in environmental pollutants resulting from increasing population, growing economies and resource-use. This review provides a glimpse into the problem of global environmental pollution, the traditional technologies available for remediation and the scope of emerging‘plant-based remediation’technologies. Phytoremediation, the use of plants to effectively remove or stabilize contaminants from the growth substrate, is a low cost and ecologically friendly alternative to the common‘dig and dump’technologies. The field of phytoremediation has been driven by the intrinsic need for identification of ideal candidate plant species. To date, there are only a very few identified plants which satisfy all of the prerequisites for use in phytoremediation. The review focuses on one such plant species, the common horticultural plant scented geranium (Pelargonium sp.), with demonstrated potential to remediate metal / salt contaminated soils / aqueous systems. The characterization of tolerance and metal / salt accumulation potential of Pelargonium sp. and its efficacy in remediating complex contaminated sites are described. The unique ability of scented geraniums to tolerate excessive amounts of multi-metals, hydrocarbon and salt mixtures, and at the same time to accumulate significant amounts of metal and salt ions in the biomass, renders this plant species as one of the ideal candidates for remediation.
Pseudomonas fluorescens 1-94 induced systemic resistance in chickpea against Fusarium wilt of chickpea caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri by the synthesis and accumulation of phenolic compounds, phenylalanine ammonia lyase(PAL) and pathogenesis related(PR) proteins(chitinase, $\beta$-1,3-glucanase and peroxidase). Time-course accumulation of these enzymes in chickpea plants inoculated with P. fluorescens was significantly(LSD, P=0.05) higher than control. Maximum activities of PR-proteins were recorded at 3 days after inoculation in all induced plants; thereafter, the activity decreased progressively. Five PR peroxidases detected in induced chickpea plants. Molecular mass of these purified peroxidases was 20, 29, 43, 66 and 97 kDa. Purified peroxidases showed antifungal activity against plant pathogenic fungi.
