  • This study was experimented on accelerated weathering test using salt and freeze-thaw to prove effects of consolidants and consolidation for stone cultural heritage. The samples used four kinds of stones (Gyeongju Namsan Granite, Iksan Granite, Yeongyang Sandstone and Jeongseon Marble) which to distributed by three type of weathering grade (Fresh, Weathered Stone and Highly Weathered Stone) added for thermal treatment. The samples were treated with three consolidants (Wacker OH 100, Remmers KSE 300 and 1T1G), and tested by 500 cycles with freezing-thawing and 50 cycles of salt weathering test. As a results of freezing-thawing test, the crack and destruction occurred from some samples. And total immersed samples maintained effect of consolidation to 200 cycles. Also, The rock particle was fall off and gradually destructed by salts weathering test. The consolidated sample relatively had fewer changes by the weathering than not treated sample. The sprayed sample had not continuous effect on weathering.

  • Sedimentary organic matter, exposed to continental surficial environment, reacts with oxygen supplied from the atmosphee and forms carbon-containing oxidation products. Knowledge of the rate and mechanisms of sedimentary organic matter weathering is important because it is one of the major controls on atmospheric oxygen level through geologic time. Under the abiological conditions, the oxidation rate of coal organic matter by molecular oxygen is enhanced by the increase of oxygen concentration and temperature. At ambient temperature and pressure, aqueous coal oxidation results in the formation of dissolved $CO_2$ dissolved organic carbon and solid oxidation products which are all quantitatively significant reaction products. The effects of pH, ultraviolet light, and microbial activity on the weathering of sedimentary organic matter are poorly contrained. Based on the results of geochmical and environmental studies, it is believed that the photochemical reaction should play an important role in the decomposition and oxidation of sedimentary organic matter removed from the weathering profile. At higher pH conditions, the production rate of DOC can be accelerated due to base catalysis. These high molecular weight oranic matter can react with man-made pollutants such as heavy metal ions via adsorption/desorption or ion exchange reactions. The effect of microbial activity on the oxidative weathering of sedimentary organic matter is poorly understood and remains to be studied.

  • The important drawback of epoxy electrodeposition(ED) coatings is the lack of the weathering resistance caused by the structure of bisphenol A. To improve this yellowing phenomena, acryl ED coatings have been developed. Compared with the epoxy ED coatings, however, acryl ED coatings are relatively weak in the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The purpose of this study is complemented their drawbacks by mixing epoxy and acryl ED paints. The salt spray, accelerated weathering test(QUV) and cupping, bending, impact test were employed to investigate the corrosion resistance, weathering resistance, and mechanical properties of ED coatings. When the ratio of acryl to epoxy resin of ED coating is 0.33, the weathering resistances are appropriately improved in condition maintaining the corrosion resistance. It was shown that the weathering resistance for epoxy ED coating was adjusted by optimally mixing acryl ED paint.

  • Small cherry specimens modified with acetic anhydride and formaldehyde vapor phase were weathered by outdoor exposure and accelerated conditioning in a climate chamber. The effects of the chemical modification were evaluated by measuring their weight percentage gains (WPG), hygroscopicity and color differences before and after weathering. The average WPGs of the 72 hour acetylated and formaldehyde-treated specimens were 8.1 and 15.7%, respectively. After outdoor exposure for more than 2 months, the acetylated specimens lost weights by only 1.5%, but the formaldehyde-treated did much more than the formers. It was revealed that acetylation reduced the hygroscopicity and discoloration of wood while formaldehyde treatment didn't. Moreover the longer is the formaldehyde treatment time the more degraded after weathering. It was concluded that the vapor-phase acetylation could be applied for improving the dimensional stability of old wooden blocks.

  • Korea Institute of Construction Materials founded Seosan Outdoor Exposure Test Site 2005 at Korea, which is a part of Worldwide Exposure Network (WEN). To evaluate the test site along with other exposure test sites, three different types of paints have been under real time weathering conditions at three major weathering test facilities around the world. Using these test specimens several spectroscopic experiments along with physical tests have been performed. Also acceleration tests have been performed using the same paints. The correlation of weathered paints among three different test facilities and accelerated test results has been compared. From the results the reliability of Seosan Weathering Test Facility and reasonable life time prediction tests are discussed.

  • Transparent noise barrier panels have the advantages of transmitting light to nearby residents and allowing drivers to orientate themselves by providing views of the surrounding area. To develop guidelines on quality criteria for transparent soundproof panels, their sound transmission loss and weatherability were experimentally investigated. In Korea, the sound transmission loss of noise barrier panels should be more than 25 dB at 500 Hz and 30 dB at 1000 Hz. The transmission loss tests of transparent panels were performed in accordance with KS F 2808. Typically, plastic materials suffer from color changes when exposed to ultraviolet(UV) light over extended periods. Therefore, weathering of plastics is one of the most important properties for outdoor applications. Protection against UV radiation and weathering is usually accomplished by using UV stabilizer additives or coatings. Transparent materials for soundproof panels were examined through accelerated weathering tests and their weathering resistances were evaluated from changes in yellowness index.

  • The biogas holder is composed of an outer membrane and an inner membrane which are subject to outdoor exposure and gas exposure respectively. The influence of weathering conditions on the photo-degradation of a biogas holder was investigated. Tests were performed under three different methods - outdoor exposure tests (Seosan, Arizona), accelerated tests (Xenon-are lamp) with the outer-membrane of biogas. Moreover, the changes in the aging process were monitored using color difference, gloss, the contact angle and an optical microscope. Changes in physical properties, such as decrease reduction in gloss, decrease in the contact angle, increase in color difference were observed in the aging process. The comparison between membrane 3B, 4B and membrane 5B under xenon-arc were discussed. Membrane 5B was very sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) ray. There were many difficulties in the outdoor exposure test due to acid rain, dust, and stain resistance.

  • Diverse microtextures and secondary minerals formed by chemical weathering were observed in the glacial debris of King George Island. Weathering rind was observed in the block of basaltic andesite tuff due to dissolution of calcite producing voids. Eolian volcanic glass altered to mixtrure of allophane-like materials and iron oxyhydroxides at grain edges with relative concentration of Al. Fe, and Ti. Biotite in granodiorite area was transfarmed to vermiculite and interstratified biotite-vermiculite or very rarely to kaolinite and gibbsite. Pyrite in the hydrothermal alteration zone was repalced by iron oxides, resulting in sulfuric acid which locally accelerated alteration of chlorite to expandable clay minerals. Weathering of plagiociase and K-feldspar was negligible. Although glacial debris of the Barton Peninsula has undergone weak chemical weathering with formation of some secondary minerals, massive formation of smectite, abundant in nearby marine sediments, didn't occur.

  • Weathering and permeability in rocks play a very important role in underground disposal of radioactive waste and their long-term management as well as stability security of rock structures. Weathering and permeability of rocks are largely controlled by the characters of inner structures of rocks. In other words, weathering rate can be accelerated depending on the quantity of pore and microcrack in rocks. Quantitative evaluation of inner structures of rocks can serve as a tool that can assess the degree of weathering of rocks. Therefore it can be said that the understanding of three dimensional distribution of the inner structure of rocks is important for long-term management of rock structures. This study was performed to analyze three dimensional distribution of pore in rocks using Micro Focus X-ray CT on fresh granite and weathered granite from Korea. Results of the analysis clearly show distribution of pore and porosity of the inner rock.
