  • This study investigated the composition and distribution of the soil microarthropods community in plantations of the Korean pine(Pinus Koraiensis SIEB. et ZUCC, the sudong area, Namyangju-gun, Korea) , which had been planted in different years. The soil samples intended to collect soil animals were taken monthly from June 1988 to July 1989. The composition of soil microarthropods community included Arachnida, Chilopoda, Insecta, Collembola, Diplopoda, Crustacea, and Symphyla. The Acarina were composed of 82.4% of Cryptostigmata, 8.0% of Mesostigmata, 7.9% of nymphs, and 1.7% of others. The Insecta included six orders including Hymenoptera(65.8%) and Diptera(13.9%). Population densities increased from when the plantations were first established until the planting were 25 years old, after which they declined. Population densities of the soil microarthropods were highest in July and lowest in January. The Collembola/Acarina ratio is 0.16 overall, and was highest in January and lowest in August.

  • Fauna of medically important arthropods in Chindo Island was studied in July 1994. Among eight speices of mosquitoes (Diptera : Culicidae), Culex tritenirohyunchus was predomiant (46.5% of the total0, and Anopheles sinensis the next. Seven specimens of the unidentified Culex sp. which seemed to be new were also collected. Total 23 species of non-biting midges(Diptera : Chiornomidae) were found in Chindo Is. Of them , Chironomus kiiensis was the predominant species (67.3%) , and Ch.flaviplumus the next (15.6%). Three species, Cladopelma viridula, Dicrotendipes septemmaculatus and Harnischia urtilamellata are reported for the first time in Korea, and they are fully re-described with illustrations. Among five species of biting midges (Diptera : Ceraopogenidae) collected, Culicoides punctatus was predominant (88.7%). A species of Foreipomia was also collected, and this genus is not recorded in Korean fauna. Only two species of domiciliary cockroaches, Periplaneta japonica and P.americana were collected in small numbers and Blatella germanica which is known as the most predominant speices in Korea was not found. The predominant speices of field rodents was Apodemus agrarius and thier ectoparasites were Leptotrombidium orientale (Acarina : Tromicibulidae), Lxodes nipponensis (Acarina : Ixodidae) ; Laelaps jettmani and Eulaelaps stabularis (Acarina : Laelapidae).

  • An insect parasitic mite was found on a larva from Japanese apricot seed. The mite was identified as Pyemotes moseri Yu et Liang (Acarina: Pyemotidae) new to Korea. The host larva was identified as Eurytoma maslovskii using mitochondrial DNA sequencing analysis. We conducted preliminary study on its reproduction and parasitization capacity in laboratory condition. A mated female mite reared on Eurytoma maslovskii larva. We counted and sexed newborn progenies and then eliminated them during periodical observations. To test parasitization capacity, a PCR tube containing mass reared P. moseri and Japanese apricot seeds (assumed bear larva of E. maslovskii) placed in a stainless bath filled with potting soil. One month later, we surveyed the seeds whether the E. maslovskii larva parasitized by mite or not. We repeated this experiment three times with five replications each. Average life span (days from parasitization to the end of reproduction) of gravid females was 24.4 days (n=8). A gravid female reproduced 104.0 female progenies (n=8). Although there were more than seven Japanese apricot seeds per bath containing larva or pupa, we found parasitization only in two seeds.

  • The expenment was conducted to study the foraging behavior of Amblyseius hngisp~nosus for eggs of Tetranychus urticoe. When preys were abundant, A. longispinosus repeated a series of foraging process (feeding, after-feeding movement, restmy, and searching) The time (Mean\ulcorner SD) spent for these components were 6 83+ 1.73. 3 OOi 1.66. 93.57+ 30 19. and -0.00 min., respectively. Afterfeeding movement was chractetired as a complex one-way circular moving path with a slow speed (0.09 mm/sec) and area-restricted Escaping movement was fast (0 31 mm/sec), more straight in direction, and edge-oriented walking. Positions of prey consumption of A. longispinosus were distributed in clump. KEY WORDS Foraging behavior, nlovlng path, Arnblyseius longispinosus, Tetranychus urtlcae.

  • In the course of surveying the internal parasites of domestic animals, a large number of eggs and mites were detected in the feces and feeds of cattle, pigs, chickens and ducks. Three kinds of mites were identified in the present studies: Acarus siro (Linnaeus), Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) and Cheyletus malaccensis (Oudemans). The eggs of the mites were similar to those of flukes. In the fecal examination, therefore, it is necessary to differentiate the mite eggs from fluke eggs. The mites found in the present studies live by organic materials. Thus, they were found in the mixed commercial animal feeds. The spoiling of animal feeds by these mites remains to be verified. The damage of the gut epithelium of animals by these adult mites has to be examined more thoroughly, although macroscopic changes were not detected in the present studies. In the commercial animal feeds, the mites were largely found during the warm, humid seasons. As these mites can cause dermatitis in man, care should be taken not to contact continuously with the contaminated feeds.

  • These experiments were conducted in the laboratory conditions to determine the prey consumption of a predaciousphytoseiid mite, Amblyseius womersleyi Schicha, and its ability to regulate the population of tea redspider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida. The functional response curve of the adult A. womersleyi to thedensity of eggs, larvae, and nymphs of T. kanzawai indicated Holling's Type 11: the consumption of prey bythe adult A. womersleyi increased with the prey density but the consumption rate decreased. The critical initialratio to suppress the prey population by the predator seemed to be 32:l @rey:predator) at 25"C, and 16:l at20$^{\circ}$C on kidney bean plant. The predator could not regulate any initial ratio of the prey population at 15$^{\circ}$C.^{\circ}$C.

  • Insect pests and their natural enemies of Hibiscus Linne (Malvaceae) were investigated from March 2002 to November 2004. Fourteen insect pest species of 9 families in 5 orders were collected from Hibiscus syriacus: 5 species in Homoptera, 3 species in Lepidoptera, 2 species in Coleoptera, 1 species in Orthoprera, 1species in Hemiptera, 1 spedies in Acarina, and 1 species in Stylommatophora. Especially, Aphis gossypii Glover (Aphididae), Anomis megogona Walker(Noctuidae) and Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) were very important species because of their increasing daminge. The highest donsities were observed from May to June in August in Tetranychus urticae. As the enemies and ento-mopathogens of insect pests on Hibiscus syriacus, 1 species of bacteria, 3 species of fungi, 1 species of fungi, 1 species of Hemiptera, 1 species of Coleoptera, 2 species of Hymenopetera, 2 species of Diptera, and 1 species of Acarina were investigated. As the predators and parasitoids of Aphis gossypii, Aphidoletes aphidoletes aphidimyza Rondani (Cecidomyiidae), Meliscaeva cinctella Zetterstedt (Syrphidae), Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coccinellidae), and Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead (Braconidae), entomopathogenic fungi, Vericillium lecani naturalis strain (Moniliaceae) and Beauveria bassiana naturalis strain strain (Hypocreaceae) were observed and Bacillus thuringiensis naturalis strain (Bacillaceae), B. bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae naturalis strain (Hypocreaceae), predators of Tetranychus urticae, Amblyseius sp. (Phytoseiidae), and Orius sp. (Anthocoridae) were observed.
