  • We have identified the paradigm, the knowledge structure, and the roles of S&T policy studies in Korea by empirical analysis and focus group interviews. First, it provisionally concluded that S&T policy studies in Korea are still in the pre-paradigm stage. Specifically, the level of consensus among scholars about the "academic definition of discipline" and "research scope", which is essential for an independent discipline, is still low. Next, a great part of the existing S&T policy studies in Korea is excessively weighted in specific research scopes and researcher groups. For a balanced development as an academic discipline, such imbalance must be overcome. Third, the studies in Korea showed that much of the research in the earlier stage was fragmented at the micro-level. More recently, however, S&T policy studies show co-evolutionary patterns, which increase the responsiveness of the society. Based on this analysis, the future direction of studies should form a unique flow of our own, building Korean policy cases and models rather than following those developed countries.

  • This study tried to answer the question : 'How does the human communication happen at the oriental medicine hospital between nurse and patient?' To answer that, a micro-ethnographic research method was used. Researcher visited T university hospital of oriental medicine and observed nurse-patient communication from September 1997 to December 1997. The data was obtained through participant observation, interview, audio-tape recording, home video camera, field note-taking, and related documents. After reviewing the whole data and deliberate analysis, first, I learned that most oriental medicine nurses communicate with their patients for their routine nursing job like recording, hand-over to the next duty, report to doctor, etc. I named this type of communication as 'ritual communication'. Second, I can define major argument as follow : Human communication of oriental medicine between nurse and patient is performed more frequently and variously when nurse contacts the patient for the routine nursing activities than for the incidental activities. As a result of these understandings, I suggest that oriental nursing need to develop the body of knowledge and expand its role and independent nursing activity. Also the bureaucratic hospital management centered doctors must be changed reasonalbly.

  • Purpose: This study was done to compare educational needs for discharge after thyroid cancer surgery between patients and nurses. Methods: The participants were 107 patients who had thyroid cancer surgery and 70 nurses who have had experience of taking care of patients with thyroid cancer surgery at P hospital in Busan. The researcher reviewed the literature and conducted a preliminary survey to develop a questionnaire. Results: Although there was no significant difference in total perceived nursing discharge educational needs after thyroid cancer surgery between patients and nurses, both had a high level of nursing educational needs for discharge. The degree of patients' needs was higher than nurses in areas of dietary management after discharge and the degree of nurses' needs was higher than patients in the other areas. Although the first ranking area of educational needs was medication management for both patients and nurses, dietary management after discharge was the second ranking for patients and operation site and complication management was those for nurses. Conclusions: As the patients had different educational needs from the nurses, nurses need to focus on the patient's educational needs and provide relevant information. Educational programs should be developed and applied to post-surgical thyroid cancer patients.

  • Purpose: This study is to find the significant symptoms related to bone density, from which a cost-effective nursing diagnosis and intervention can be derived. Method: The research sample was 102 women, the sampling was designed by the researcher's convenience, and the subjects of the sample voluntarily participated in a questionnaire survey and measurements. The questionnaire asked socio-demographics, women' reproductive health symptoms, and the life style of the subject. Osteometer DTX-200 for bone density measure and a ruler for measuring spinal curvature were used. All the data were collected at the two public health clinics in a city in Korea. Result: The subjects' current and completed menopause ages, duration of menopause, degree of spinal curvature, BMI, frequency of parity and etc. showed significant correlations with bone density. However, only the degree of spinal curvature(p<.001, r=-.22) was found to be meaningful as a predicted factor for self diagnosis of bone density level. Conclusions: Since most of the subjects have not recognized the relationships between changes in spinal curvature and lowered bone densities, nurse needs to educate clients to get medical assistance to prevent from further bone density reduction by earlier finding of spinal curvature.
