A Research on the Use of Information Resources of the Humanities Scholars in Korea (인문학자의 정보자원 이용에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of information resources of the humanities scholars in Korea and suggest the strategic planning of academic library and information services to serve their needs. To collect data, a mail survey was conducted during the period of November 2007 through January 2008. Out of 799 humanities scholars sampled from 25 universities, 132 responded with the completion rate of 16%. Major findings in this study are as follows: First, the majority of the humanities scholars distribute their time equally to research and education, and conduct independent research. Second, they still largely depend on print resources, including scholarly journals, books, and manuscripts for getting information, while using some online information resource mostly in text such as electronic documents and journals. They expect that the frequency of using such print resources would not decline much, but the use of online resources could definitely increase in the next five years. Some variances in the behavior were observed among the groups of scholars according to their research experiences. It is suggested that academic libraries (1) conduct more active outreach, (2) prioritize between traditional and electronic resources, (3) plan information literacy education for traditional resources.

Study on Research Trends (2001~2020) of the Baekdudaegan Mountains with Big Data Analyses of Academic Journals (학술논문 빅데이터 분석을 활용한 백두대간에 관한 연구동향(2001~2020) 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze domestic research trends related to the Baekdudaegan Mountains in the last two decades. In total, 551 academic papers and keyword data related to the Baekdudaegan Mountains were collected using the "Research and Information Service Section" and analyzed using "big data" analysis programs, such as Textom and UCINET. Papers related to the Baekdudaegan Mountains were published in 177 academic journals, and 229 papers (41.6% of all published papers) were published between 2011 and 2015. According to word frequency data (N-gram analyses), the major research topic over the past 20 years was "species diversity." According to CONCOR analysis results, the main research could be divided into 15 areas, the most important of which was "species diversity," followed by "vegetation restoration and management," and "culture." Ecological research comprised 12 groups with a frequency of 78.8%; humanities and social research comprised 2 groups with a frequency of 15.6%. Overall, our study of research areas and quantitative data analyses provides valuable information that could help establish policy formulation.

A Study on Classification into Hangeul and Hanja in Text Area of Printed Document (인쇄체 문서의 문자영역에서 한글과 한자의 구별에 관한 연구)

  • This paper propose an algorithm for preprocessing of character recognition, which classify characters into Hangeul and Hanja. In this study, we use the 9 structural chacteristics of Hanja which isn't affected by deformation of size and style of characters and rates based on character size to classify characters. Firstly, we process the blocking to segment each characters. Secondly, on this segmented characters, we apply algorithm proposed in this paper to classify Hangeul and Hanja. Finally, we classify characters into Hangeul and Hanja, respectively. An experiment with 2350 Hangeul and 4888 Hanja printed Gothic and Mincho style of KS-C 5601 are carried out. We experiment on typeface sample book, newspapers, academic society's papers, magazines, textbooks and documents written out word processor to obtain the classifying rates of 98.8%, 92%, 96%, 98% and 98%, respectively.

The Implications of Content Schemata for Standardized Reading Tests

  • This article reports that a testee's content schemata have detrimental effects on the validity of standardized reading comprehension tests. in case that the reading passages constitute his prior background knowledge framed by regular academic pursuits focused on a major field of study. The empirical research findings on such a reliability issue have shown that the Korean subjects' familiarity with the content domain of the reading materials may substantially enhance their test performance, operated as unfair advantages over the other participants at the same level of English proficiency who do not possess technical knowledge closely related to the contents of the test passages. Based on these results, it may be argued that the reading text should be composed of maximally neutral contents to every testee to avoid the possible overlapping between a test-taker's content schemata and the content domain of the materials. Therefore, this article claims that the tenets of schema theory with its long-standing foundation on culturally predetermined content and formal schemata need to be expanded to cover professional knowledge structures, like those acquired by higher education, as the hard-wired framework of an individual's original culture-specific background knowledge.

Comparison of The Eumyang(陰陽) Theory between Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經) and Juyeok(周易) - Focused on Gyesajeon(繫辭傳)- ("황제내경(黃帝內經)"과 "주역(周易)"의 음양론(陰陽論) 비교(比較) -"계사전(繫辭傳)"을 중심으로 -)

  • Objective : Through the comparison of the Eumyang(陰陽) theory between Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經) and Juyeok(周易) Gyesajeon(繫辭傳) written by Gongja(孔子), the philosophical background of Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經) and the position of Eumyang theory in the ancient academic society can be clearly understood. Method : The similarities and differences of the Eumyang theory in Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經) and Juyeok(周易) Gyesajeon(繫辭傳) are categorized and analyzed comparing both texts. Results & Conclusion : Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經) and Juyeok(周易) all recognized Eumyang movement as the most important and basic principle of the change of the universe. In the relationship between Eum(陰) and Yang(陽), the key of harmonization of them is to keep and practice the virtue of each others. The plentiful expression of Juyeok(周易) Gyesajeon(繫辭傳) about the relationship of Eumyang is helpful to understand and apply the concepts of Eumyang to daily life. The other hand, Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經) as medical text, concentrates upon the explanation about the movement and circulation of Gi(氣) between Eum and Yang.

Educational Needs for Prevention of Cell Phone Addiction in Korean Adolescents (청소년의 휴대전화 중독 예방에 대한 교육 요구)

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop an educational needs scale for the prevention of cell phone addiction and to investigate the educational needs for prevention of cell phone addiction in Korean adolescents. Methods: The participants were 609 adolescents in one middle school and two high schools. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, and analyzed using the SPSS program. Results: Twenty items regarding the educational needs for prevention of cell phone addiction were selected for the final scale, and categorized into 3 factors (diagnosis and management, properties, and definition and actual condition) which explained 61.09% of the total variance. The educational needs for the prevention of cell phone addiction in adolescents were moderate, with items related to diagnosis and management ranked as most important. The educational needs for prevention of cell phone addiction varied by gender, grade, academic achievement, perception of health status, satisfaction with school, and text messaging participants. Conclusion: The findings indicate that educational needs for diagnosis and management of cell phone addiction ranked as most important in adolescents. Therefore, programs related to the prevention and management of cell phone addiction based on the educational needs of adolescents should be provided.

Web-based Education for Practical Business English. (웹을 기초로 한 실무 영어 교육)

  • It is noted that although the current state of development of web-based English education (hereafter referred to as WBEE) might not meet the criteria some educators have set for themselves in the field, students certainly seem to prefer studying in a web-based and computer-assisted learning environment. This kind of demand is fueling the drive to develop more suitable variations of WBEE. In order for WBEE to work out, a teacher should be a multifunctional type of instructor handling responsibilities such as the role of scriptwriter to create text, act as technician for the sound mixing and recording, preside over online chat rooms and discussion boards, and finally, as webmaster to maintain the site and supervise all academic/ clerical work related to the course. Therefore, it is suggested that WBEE be accompanied by a small personnel to divide the labor and lessen the burden on the actual teacher. Finally, it is noted that the traditional relationship between students and teacher may no longer be sustainable since WBEE does not provide the face-to-face style of class discussion and office hours in its current form. Until the technology is fully developed to compensate for these kinds of differences, it is an immediate challenge to provide other more compelling reasons for students to participate in WBEE.

Epilogue to the unabridged Korean translation of On War ("전쟁론" 완역 후기)

  • This year I published a Korean translation of On War in three volumes, written by Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz. I believe it is the first unabridged Korean translation from the original German text, Vom Kriege. It is true that the work has been translated into Korean several times, but some translations have been done from English or Japanese versions, while others are abridged ones. It is not easy to make a good translation of On War, partly because the book is actually an unfinished work, and partly because it contains almost all academic subjects in social sciences. Moreover, two aspects of the dialectical logic in the book make it more difficult to understand. One is inductive reasoning, the other is deductive explanation. The former is to 'ascend' to draw principles and generalizations from empirical experience, the latter is to 'descend' to describe and explain given principles, often by concrete examples. Considering these difficulties, if we want to have better translations than existing ones, there should be substantial commentaries which contain not only history of wars, but also biographies and geographies concerned. I hope that On War can be taught and studied in many universities, for it will make it easier to produce reliable commentaries.

  • ${\ulcorner}$Sanghanlonju Taeyangpyun(傷寒論注 太陽篇)${\lrcorner}$ is a part of ${\ulcorner}$Uijonggumgam(醫宗金鑑)${\lrcorner}$, ${\ulcorner}$Ui jong gum gam${\lrcorner}$ is a voluminous medical book. That was complied by O gyum(吳謙) who was a chief of Taeuiwon(太醫院). In this paper, I speculated O gyum's annotations and compared other annotations in some parts, needed a comparing. O gyum's academic features, appeared in ${\ulcorner}$Sanghanlon ju Taeyangpyun${\lrcorner}$ are as follow. O gyum understood the Taeyang(太陽) as a meaning of Gyounglak(經絡), and explained that the Taeyang part disease arose from a pathologic course of Banggwanggyong(膀胱經). He maintained The Samgangjeonglip(三綱鼎立) theory and restructrured the text order in his own way. He fixed the contents of ${\ulcorner}$Sanghanlon(傷寒論)${\lrcorner}$ to accommodate his medical view. And then he compared and distinguished similar diseases or prescriptions necessary to division clinically. And then about issues of long standing in study of San han lon, he showed his own opinions. Finally, remarking many other commentator's theory, he tried to understand Taeyangpyun(太陽篇).

A Classifying Model of Korean Fashion Brands for Global Strategy Development (글로벌화 전략 제안을 위한 국내 패션 브랜드의 분류체계에 관한 연구)

  • This study was designed to make a proposal of a classifying model of Korean fashion brands as the first step in a long-term research plan developing a globalization roadmap for Korean fashion industry. On the basis of ownership advantages of a brand which included firm level attributes and brand level characteristics, fashion brands were classified into eight types. The proposed model was expected to provide an efficient and meaningful framework in developing global strategies both for academic and practical purposes. The model proposed four major categories of fashion brands including manufacturer brands, designer brands, retailer brands, and non-brands. Manufacturer brands were further classified into three groups of conglomerate fashion brands, fashion brands, and sports-specialized brands. Non-brands included small/very small-sized manufacturer non-brands, small/very small-sized non-brands, and OEM/ODM exporters. The classifying dimensions, brand type characteristics, and the globalization approach were discussed. Methods to test the reliability and validity of classifying were also discussed in the text.
