  • The purpose of this study was to introduce the concept of academic medicine to the medical societies of Korea and to identify any potential obstacles in the establishment of academic medicine in Korea. The core concepts of academic medicine include medical education, research, and patient care. Academic medicine can be practiced in the unique area of healthcare involving medical schools and teaching hospitals by faculty physicians in the academic medicine field. Through academic medicine, the next generation of healthcare professionals is trained, new discoveries can be made, and patients can find new hope for a cure. The flourishing of academic medicine has resulted in substantial advancements in medicine over the past few centuries, but at the turn of the 21st century, there was concern that academic medicine was on the decline. To address this concern, the International Campaign to Revitalize Academic Medicine was established and announced five scenarios to 2025 to debate the future of academic medicine. Although the system resembles that of Western medical societies, Korean medical societies were not familiar with academic medicine, and poor conditions caused by the distorted healthcare system in Korea have actually interfered with the nurturing of academic medicine. One of the main problems may include less interest in medical education and research relative to clinical practice by medical societies and the government. Collaborative efforts from both medical societies and the government are needed to establish academic medicine successfully in Korea for a better future.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the current service pattern of electronic scholarly journals at homepages of Korean academic societies and to provide some suggestions for the better service of electronic scholarly journals. Data were collected from December 26, 2003 to January 6, 2004. The object of the examination was from the number of 257 academic societies which are publishing Registered Journals designated by Korea Research Foundation. Among the number of 257 academic societies, 116(45.1%) of them are providing electronic scholarly journals at their homepages, and among the number of 116 academic societies, 62(53.4%) of which are providing electronic scholarly journals with their own efforts without other organizations' help. • KISTI-ACOMS ver. 2.0 has been distributed to more than 340 academic societies and used by more than 130 academic societies for 4 years since 2005 and still is desired for use by lots of other academic societies. But contrary to the desire and requests for system upgrades of academic societies, ACOMS has not been improved for last 3 years and some academic societies began to use domestic or foreign similar pay online peer review systems. In this paper, a new integrated portal service system is suggested in order to attempt national production cost-saving and quality improvement of academic information by creating and collecting high quality scientific and technologic academic information inexpensively. We come up with methodology of integration and utilization of a personal academic activity portal system interoperable with other services of KISTI, an open citation reference database automatically constructed by authors' activity and a journal evaluation system based on impact factor.

  • This study introduces research trends in Asia by analyzing the publications of scholars in major universities in Asia, which can provide Asian researchers with what topics Asian researchers have been conducting the last six years. In addition, this study provides information on who have been active in research with the list of top one hunred scholars according to their H index scores. For this analysis, we have collected academic publications of all the professors in major universities from twelve Asian countries, analyzed what topics they have been studying along with which topics are most popular by country and geographical area, evaluated scholars' academic performances in terms of their impacts on academic society, and finally selected the top one hunred scholars among them. This study makes some unique contributions to the academic societies in Asia at least in two ways. Firstly, this study provides Asian researchers with information on what Asian researchers have been studying for the last six years, which is expected to help Asian researchers to understand research trends in Asia. Secondly, this study introduces who has been active in academic research in what countries or universities in Asia, which has never been addressed in the academic societies in Asia. This study hopefully generates some positive competition among Asian scholars and acknowledges their contribution to academic societies.

  • Societies are important sources of new information for users. However, most of these societies still rely on traditional, or rather ancient methods for gathering and servicing the information. Furthermore, most of the societies are trying to electrify processes such as managing members and paper submission as well as the process managing the information for service but are limited due to financial and technical reasons. Therefore, KISTI(Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information) has developed the ${\ulcorner}$KISTl-ACOMS (KISTI-Article Contribution Management System)${\lrcorner}$ as part of the national project for automating the process of processing academic information by societies, in order to convert journals published by academic societies in Korea into an electronic form and make them accessible on the Internet. This system has been developed in the year 2001 and has since been distributed to societies free of charge. The number of societies requesting the service has risen recently, which prompted us to take more recommendations of the societies that adopt this system into account in expanding and standardizing the area of service being provided by the system.

  • In this paper, we design and implement KISTI-ACOMS 2.0, extended from its previous version, applicable to all the academic societies by integrating new concepts, functions and services. KISTI-ACOMS 2.0 provides membership management, paper review management, replaces most extensive customizing with configuration, and supports a variety of unique features such as English service for foreign authors and reviewers, similar article search for preventing piracy and user access control, which are difficult to be implemented in the existing systems being used by Korean societies. Therefore, many academic societies can configure KISTI-ACOMS 2.0 more easily and promptly, and manage their own business such as society administration and journal publication online more effectively.

  • Since the year 2000, emphasis has been placed on a more strict evaluation of national academic societies and their journals, which has caused most societies to endeavour to produce higher quality journals and research. Korean Earth Science Society (KESS) should be such an exemplary model. Thus, the purpose of this study was to isolate characteristics of well-evaluated academic societies and explore the direction KESS should proceed to better its educational agents and strengthen its research contributions. Back in 2002, the Korean Research Foundation graded the journal of KESS as an officially qualified journal. It was bequeathed the first institute to be registered in the category of Earth Science. Furthermore, such classification was accepted as national academic classification and Scientific Citation Index through a public hearing executed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning in 2003. Currently, the Korean Research Foundation is reviewing a proposal to approve Earth Science as a unique citation index category. This proposal is quite crucial in that such an approval would be followed by increased funding and affect the future status of KESS. More support and interest from all members of KESS are required to establish the identity of Earth Science as an independent academic entity.
