Statement of problem. When TiN coating is applied to the abutment screw, occurrence of greater preload and prevention of the screw loosening could be expected due to decrease of frictional resistance. However, the proper thickness of TiN coating on abutment screw has not been yet reported. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to find out the appropriate TiN coating thickness by evaluating the detorque force and the surface change of titanium abutment screw with various TiN coating thickness. Material and methods. 1. Material Thirty five non-coated abutment screws were prepared for TiN coating. TiN coatings were prepared by Arc ion plating method. Depending on the coating deposition time(CDT), experimental groups were divided into 6 groups(CDT 30min, 60min, 90min, 120min, 150min, 180min) and those of 1 group was not coated as a control group. Each group was made up of 5 abutment screws. 2. Methods FE-SEM(Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscoper) and EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) were used to observe the surface of the abutment screw. Electric scales was used to measure the weight of the abutment screw after the repeated closing and opening of 10 trials. Detorque force was measured with digital torque gauge, at each trial. Results. 1. As the coating deposition time increased, the surface became more consistent and smooth. 2. As for the abutment screws that were TiN coated for more than 60 minutes, no surface change was found after the repeated closing and opening. 3. The TiN coated abutment screws showed less weight change than the non-coated abutment screws. 4. The TiN coated abutment screws showed higher mean detorque force than the noncoated abutment screws. 5. The abutment screw coated for 60 minutes showed the highest mean detorque force. Conclusion. The coating layer of proper thickness is demanded to obtain consistent and smooth coating surface, resistance to wear, and increased detorque force of the abutment screw. In conclusion, the coating deposition time of 60 minutes indicated improved mechanical property, when TiN coating was conducted on titanium abutment screw.

The fit between dental implant fixture and zirconia abutment is affected by many variables during the fabrication process by CAD/CAM program and milling working. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface compatibility and electrochemical behaviors of zirconia abutment for prosthodontics. Zirconia abutments were prepared and fabricated using zirconia block and milling machine. For stabilization of zirconia abutments, sintering was carried out at $1500^{\circ}F$ for 7 hrs. The specimens were cut and polished for gap observation. The gap between dental implant fixture and zirconia abutment was observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The hardness and corrosion resistance of zirconia abutments were observed with vickers hardness tester and potentiostat. The gap between dental implant fixture and zirconia abutment was $5{\sim}12{\mu}m$ for small gap, and $40{\sim}60{\mu}m$ for large gap. The hardness of zirconia surface was 1275.5 Hv and showed micro-machined scratch on the surface. The corrosion potentials of zirconia abutment/fixture was .290 mV and metal abutment/fixture was .280 mV, whereas $|E_{pit}-E_{corr}|$ of zirconia abutment/fixture (172 mV) was higher than that of metal abutment/fixture (150 mV). The corrosion morphology of metal abutment/fixture showed the many pit on the surface in compared with zirconia abutment/fixture.

Dental implant system is composed of abutment, abutment screw and implant fixture connected with screw. The problems of loosening/tightening and stability of abutment screw depend on surface characteristics, like a surface roughness, coating materials and friction resistance and so on. For this reason, surface treatment of abutment screw has been remained research problem in prosthodontics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the stability of TiN and WC coated dental abutment screw, abutment screw was used, respectively, for experiment. For improving the surface characteristics, TiN and WC film coating was carried out on the abutment screw using EB-PVD and sputtering, respectively. In order to observe the coating surface of abutment screw, surfaces of specimens were characterized, using field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDS). The stability of TiN and WC coated abutment screw was evaluated by potentiodynamic, and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization method in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion potential of TiN coated specimen was higher than those of WC coated and non-coated abutment screw. Whereas, corrosion current density of TiN coated screws was lower than those of WC coated and non-coated abutment screw. The stability of screw decreased as following order; TiN coating, WC coating and non-coated screw. The pitting potentials of TiN and WC coated specimens were higher than that of non-coated abutment screw, but repassivation potential of WC coated specimen was lower than those of TiN coated and non-coated abutment screws due to breakdown of coated film. The degree of local ion dissolution on the surface increased in the order of TiN coated, non-coated and WC coated screws.

In this study, titanium abutments and zirconia abutments were connected to each implant in external type implants. After that they were loaded 10000 times with 20Kg as occlusal force. The surface changes of external hexgon part and platform were observed in FESEM image. Viker's hardness of an implant, a titanium abutment and a zirconia abutment were measured respectively. 1. Viker's hardness of an implants, a titanium abutment and a zirconia abutment was $309.80{\pm}11.78$ HV, $318.40{\pm}11.82$ HV, and $1495.30{\pm}16.21$ HV respectively. There was no statistical significance between an implant and a titanium abutment (P>0.05, Anova). However, there was statistical significance between an implant and a zirconia abutment(P<0.05, Anova). 2. The wear was observed at the joint of implant and abutment in both a titanium abutment group and a zirconia abutment group after loading 10,000 times. The zirconia abutment showed more remarkable wear than the titanium one. In conclusion, the wear of external hexagon and platform was much more notable in a zirconia abutment group than a titanium one. It was suggested that it could result from the difference of surface hardness between titanium and zirconia. The wear of junction between an implant and a zirconia abutment becomes more severe, the connection of an implant and an abutment is much more unfit. This is likely to cause loosening and fracture of the abutment screw. so it is considered that the possibility of implant supra-structure failure can be increased.

Purpose. The aim of this study was to investigate to what extent cyclic load affects the screwless implant-abutment connection for Morse taper dental implants. Materials and Methods. 16 implants (SICvantage max) and 16 abutments (Swiss Cross) were used. The screwless implant-abutment connection was subjected to 10,000 cycles of axial loading with a maximum force of 120 N. For the pull-off testing, before and after the same cyclic loading, the required force for disconnecting the remaining 6 implant-abutment connections was measured. The surface of 10 abutments was examined using a scanning electron microscope 120× before and after loading. Results. The pull-off test showed a significant decrease in the vertical force required to pull the abutment from the implant with mean 229.39 N ± 18.23 before loading, and 204.30 N ± 13.51 after loading (P<.01). Apart from the appearance of polished surface areas and slight signs of wear, no visible damages were found on the abutments. Conclusion. The deformation on the polished abutment surface might represent the result of micro movements within the implant-abutment connection during loading. Although there was a decrease of the pull-off force values after cyclic loading, this might not have a notable effect on the clinical performance.
Statement of problem: A few dry lubricants were applied to abutment screws for the improvement of joint stability. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface change and fit of TiN-Coated abutment screw through the examination of tested screws in the field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM;Netherland, Phillips co., model:XL 30 SFEG) after repeated closing and opening. Materials and method: Titanium(3i/implant Innovations Inc, USA) and Gold-Tite abutment screws(3i/implant Innovations Inc, USA) were selected for Group A and C respectively. TiN coated titanium abutment screws were also divided into two groups, Group B and D. Abutment screws of each group and the fit of abutment screw/implant fixture/abutment were observed on FE-SEM after repeated closing and opening test respectively. Results: 1. The abutment screws of TiN coated groups(Group B and D) showed more remarkable wear resistance in the threads of the screw than those of the other group(Group A and C). 2. There were more severe wear and defect of TiN coating in Group D tightened to 32 Ncm than Group B to 20 Ncm. 3. There was no difference in the fit of abutment screw/fixture/abutment among four groups, Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D. Conclusion: Under the conditions of this study, it is suggested that TiN coating of abutment screw be clinically acceptable and be expected to reduce the risk of abutment screw loosening. TiN coating of abutment screw showed good resistance against wear and the adequate fit of abutment screw/implant fixture/abutment.

Currently, dental implants are widely used as artificial teeth due to their good chewing performance and long life cycle. Generally, a dental implant consists of an abutment as the upper part and a fixture as the lower part. When chewing forces are repeatedly applied to a dental implant, a gap is often generated at the interfacial surface between the abutment and the fixture, and it results in some deterioration such as loosening of the fastening screw, dental retraction and fixture fracture. To enhance the sealing performance for coping with such problems, this study proposes a new sealing-type abutment having a number of grooves along the conical surface circumference, and it carries out finite element analysis in consideration of the external chewing force and pretension between the abutment and the fixture. The result shows that the proposed sealing-type abutment shows an enhanced sealing performance in terms of the contact pressure in comparison with a conventional abutment.

The purpose of this study is to assess the mechanical properties of the ceramic abutment with washer. In this study, ceramic abutment were used, tested with $30^{\circ}$ compression load, shear fatigue, adaptation accuracy test(rotation angle, contact interval), removal torque force test, torsional breaking force test. The $30^{\circ}$ compression load was 729 N, the shear fatigue load was 275 N, adaptation accuracy test of rotation angle was within $3^{\circ}$, contact interval within $10{\mu}m$, and removal torque force test value is $18.88N{\cdot}cm$, torsional breaking force test value is $35.52N{\cdot}cm$. Ceramic abutment with a washer fitted have sufficient mechanical strength and may be substituted for titanium abutment.
Statement of problom: In the internal connection system the loading transfer mechanism within the inner surface of the implant and also the stress distribution occuring to the mandible can be changed according to the abutment form. Therefore it is thought to be imperative to study the difference of the stress distribution occuring at the mandible according to the abutment form. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the loading distributing characteristics of 3 implant systems with internal connection under vertical and inclined loading using finite element analysis. Material and method: Three finite element models were designed according to the type of internal connection of ITI(model 1), Friadent(model 2), and Bicon(model 3) respectively. This study simulated loads of 200N in a vertical direction (A), a $15^{\circ}$ inward inclined direction (B), and a $30^{\circ}$ outward inclined direction (C). Result: The following results have been made based on this numeric simulations. 1. The greatest stress showed in the loading condition C of the inclined load with outside point from the centric cusp tip. 2. Without regard to the loading condition, the magnitudes of the stresses taken at the supporting bone, the implant fixture, and the abutment were greater in the order of model 2, model 1, and model 3. 3. Without regard to the loading condition, greater stress was concentrated at the cortical bone contacting the upper part of the implant fixture, and lower stress was taken at the cancellous bone. 4. The stress of the implant fixture was usually widely distributed along the inner surface of the implant fixture contacting the abutment post. 5. The stress distribution pattern of the abutment showed that the great stress was usually concentrated at the neck of the abutment and the abutment post, and the stress was also distributed toward the lower part of the abutment post in case of the loading condition B, C of the inclined load. 6. In case of the loading condition B, C of the inclined load, the maximum von Misess stress at the whole was taken at the implant fixture both in the model 1 and model 2, and at the abutment in the model 3. 7. The stress was inclined to be distributed from abutment post to fixture in case of the internal connection system. Conclusion: The internal connection system of the implant and the abutment connection methods, the stress-induced pattern at the supporting bone, the implant fixture, and the abutment according to the abutment connection form had differenence among them, and the stress distribution pattern usually had a widely distributed tendency along the inner surface of the implant fixture contacting the a butment post.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution developed in the supporting structures by mandibular distal extension removable partial dentures with 2 different direct retainer designs and with or without indirect retainer and abutment splinting. The examined direct retainers on the second bicuspid abutment tooth were Akers clasp and RPA clasp, the indirect retainer was located on the mesial fossa of the first bicuspid, and the first and second bicuspid were splinted in case of tooth splinting. Total 8 cases were compared and analyzed with 3-dimensional finite element method. 150N were applied vertically on the artificial teeth of the removable partial denture, and then stress distribution patterns were analyzed and compared. The results were as follows : 1. The forces transmitted to the abutment tooth were primarily from the occlusal rests. 2. The abutment tooth was displaced distally when the force was applied. The compressive stress was observed at the distal root surface of the abutment tooth and the tensile stress, at the mesial root surface. 3. The denture base was displaced posteriorly and inferiorly when the force was applied. At the more distal portion of the denture base, the greater displacement was observed.And the anterior portion of the major connector was displaced superiorly. 4. The occlusal rest placed on the distal part of the abutment tooth tended to tip the tooth more posteriorly than did one on the mesial part of that tooth. 5. Severe superior displacement was observed at the anterior portion of the major connector in case of removable partial dentures without indirect retainer. 6. In case of tooth-splinting, the stress was distributed through all the root surface of both abuments. In case of no tooth-splinting, the stress was concentrated on the distal root surface of the primary abutment.
