Abundances of small fishes that utilized eelgrass meadows of Hansilpo, Chungmu, were analyzed to determine fish species composition and monthly changes of this temperate seagrass fish community during 1983-1986. A total of 4,646 fishes that comprised 35 species in 19 families was collected during the period of investigation. Pholis taczanowskii, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, and Sryngnathus schlegeli predominated in ichthyofauna that occupied the eelgrass meadows most of the year. These four most abundant fish species accounted for approximately $64\%$ of the number of fish collected. Juveniles of economically valuable fish species such as Sebastes inermis, Platycephalus indicus and Limanda yokohamae were also collected in the study area. Seasonal changes in both species composition and abundances of fish populations were major characteristics in these eelgrass meadows. A peak abundance of total fishes occurred during spring, with a secondary peak during fall. The lowest abundance of total fishes occurred in winter. Each abundant fish species showed its own seasonal abundance pattern, and a peak abundance 1-3 months separated from other species with some overlap of the increased larval recruitment.
Coral reef fisheries are prominent for the archipelagic countries' food sufficiency and security. Studies showed that fish abundance and biomass are affected by biophysical variables. The present study determines which biophysical variables are important predictors of fish diversity, abundance, and biomass. The study used available monitoring data from the Indonesian Research Center for Oceanography, the National Board for Research and Innovation. Data were collected from 245 transects in 19 locations distributed across the Indonesian Archipelago, including the eastern Indian Ocean, Sunda Shelf (Karimata Sea), Wallacea (Flores and Banda Seas), and the western Pacific Ocean. Principal component analysis and multiple regression model were administered to 13 biophysical metrics against 11 variables of coral reef fishes, i.e., diversity, abundance, and biomass of coral reef fishes at three trophic levels. The results showed for the first time that the covers of other fauna, coral rubbles, and soft corals were the three most important predictor variables for nearly all coral reef fish variables. Other fauna cover was the important predictor for all 11 coral reef fish variables. Coral rubble cover was the predictor for ten variables, but carnivore fish abundance. Soft coral cover was a good predictor for corallivore, carnivore, and targeted fishes. Despite important predictors for corallivore and carnivore fish variables, hard coral cover was not the critical predictor for herbivore fish variables. The other important predictor variables with a consistent pattern were dead coral covered with algae and rocks. Dead coral covered with algae was an important predictor for herbivore fishes, while the rock was good for only carnivore fishes.
In order to increase the completeness of the investigations of stellar abundances, we can use spectrum synthesis method, new atomic data and observation of stellar spectra with resolution comparable to solar spectral atlases. We made a brief review of main problems of these three ways. We present new results of abundance determinations in the atmospheres of four stars. The first is the implementation of new atomic data to well known Przybylski's star. We show that the number of spectral lines, which can be identificated in the spectrum of this star, can be significantly higher. The second example is the investigation of $\zeta$ Cyg. We found the abundances of 51 elements in the atmosphere of this mild barium star. The third example is halo star HD221170. Our preliminary abundance pattern consists of 42 elements. The heaviest elements in this pattern are U and Th. The last star is the spectroscopic binary HD153720. The number of elements investigated in the spectra of components of this star is not large, but the results show that the components are Am-stars.
Community organization of the drosophilid flies was investigated with respect to the seasonal variation in species abundance and vertical microdistribution on the basis of the trapped collections in the two natural forests on Cheju-do from May to October 1994. The dominant species were Drosophila bizonata, D. curviceps, D. lutescens, D. angu leris, D. tsigana and D. immigrans in the annual collections. The pattern in seasonal changes of the dominant species was similar at the two survey sites. Seasonal fluctuation in the species diversity was more affected by evenness than by species richness (number of species). The seasonal variation of abundance showed an unimodal pattern in all of the dominant species. The seasonal patterns of vertical microdistribution revealed difference in some of the dominant species between the two survey sites. These results suggest that the predominant species in the forest avoid niche overlap by means of seasonal separation of breedings and that the vertical microdistribution is strongly affected by factors associated with season and vertical site in the deep wooded forests.
Sub-bottom profiler and deep tow imaging system were performed in the KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area in order to find out controlling factor in nodule formation from the relationship between distribution of Mn nodules and micro-scale topographic change. Although abundance of r- and t- types nodules increase on the seafloor of thin upper transparent layer, no significant correlation was found between the thickness of upper transparent layer and total nodule abundance in the study area. Our results show that distribution pattern of nodule, including abundance, continuity, and facies, can vary with small scale in similar abyssal plain.
The interrelationships between distribution of phytoplankton and hydrographical conditions were studied from December 1983 to July 1984 in Yeongil Bay. The temporal variation of phytoplankton abundance seems to be mainly influenced by the vertical stability of water column and the freshwater run-off accompanied with possible nutrient input. The temporal progression of dominant species shows general succession pattern, especially skeletonema costatum was found a dominant species in each month. Although the differences between concentration of chlorophyll a and abundance of phytoplankton may be caused by cell size variation, during the study period they show felatively good linear manner. The phytohydrographic region based on multivariate analysis reflects the relationships between hydrographical condition and distribution pattern of phytoplankton.
The time series data of rotifer community focusing on the species number and total density were collected from 29 reservoirs located at Jeonnam Province from 2008 to 2016 quarterly. The reservoirs had similar weather condition during the study period, but their sizes and water qualities were different. To analyze the temporal dynamics of rotifer community, the medians, ranges, outliers and coefficient of variation (CV) value of rotifer species number and abundance were compared. For the temporal trend analysis, time series of each reservoir data were compared and clustered using the dynamic time warping function of the R package "dtwclust". Small-sized reservoirs showed higher variability in rotifer abundance with more frequent outliers than large-sized reservoirs. On the other hand, apparent pattern was not observed for the rotifer species number. For the temporal pattern of rotifer density, COD, phytoplankton abundance fluctuation, and cladoceran abundance fluctuation have been suggested as potential factor affecting the rotifer abundance dynamics.
The aims of this study are 1) to construct a database using geostatistics and Geographic Information System (GIS), and 2) to derive the spatial relationships between manganese nodule abundance and other geological factors such as metal grade, slope, water depth, topography, and acoustic characteristics of the sub-bottom. Using GIS, it is possible to analyze a large amount of data efficiently, and to maximize the practical application, to increase specialization, and to enhance the accuracy of the analyses. The greater the copper and nickel grade, the higher the rating. The distribution pattern of nickel grade is similar to that of copper grade. The slopes are generally less than $3^{\circ}$ except for seamounts and cliff areas. The rating shows no correlation with slope. The rating is highest for slopes between 2.5 and $3.5^{\circ}$ in block N1 and between 4.0 and $4.5^{\circ}$ in block N3. The topography is classified into five groups: seamount, hill crest, hill slant, hill base or plain, and seafloor basin or valley. The rating proves lowest for seamount and hill crest. Our results show that the rating increases with the water depth in the study area. Nodule abundance dose not show any significant relationship with the thickness of the upper transparent layer in the study area.
Using data from flies collected with pitfall traps in 365 forests on a nationwide scale in Korea, the abundance and distribution changes of two families (Phoridae and Lauxaniidae) in Korean forests were predicted at the genus level according to two climate change scenarios: RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. The most suitable temperature for the 17 major genera was estimated using a weighted average regression model. Stichillus and Anevrina displayed the lowest optimum temperature with 7.6℃ and 8.5℃ in annual mean temperature, respectively, whereas Chonocephalus had the highest optimum temperature with 12.1℃. Among thirty genera, seven genera (four from Phoridae and three from Lauxaniidae), which showed their abundance in a bell-type or linear pattern along the temperature gradient, were used for predicting the distribution changes according to the future climate change scenarios. All the taxa of this study are expected to decrease in abundance and distribution as a function of temperature increase. Moreover, cold-adapted taxa were found to be more affected than warm-adapted taxa.

Distribution and abundance of planktonic shrimps were studied in the southern sea of Korea from 1987 to 1991. Nine species of five genera belonging to three families were identified. Of these, Leptochela sydniensis and Lucifer intermedius were predominant species and Lucifer penicilifer and Lucifer typus were common species. Remaining five species, Acetes chinensis, Leptochela gracilis, Lucifer chacei, Process wheeleri and Sergestes similis occurred sporadically and rarely. The distribution pattern of planktonic shrimps varied with species and sampling periods. L. intermedius occurred abundantly along inshore waters. L. penicilifer and L. typus appeared in both inshore and offshore waters, but more abundantly in offshore waters under influence of the Tsushima Current. In conclusion, the distribution patterns of planktonic shrimps may be related with hydrographic characteristics and seasonality in the southern sea of Korea.
