  • Graphene shows diverse novel physical properties arising from its peculiar electronic states, so called Dirac electrons. Especially, effect of magnetic field is very unique, exhibiting exotic Landau level (LL) splitting. LLs are substantially modified by spins of Dirac electrons and pseudo-spins. The degeneracy of LLs is lifted to show splitting by electron-electron interaction and by the Zeeman effect. We investigated the magneto-optical absorption of graphene subjected to ultra-high magnetic field. Samples were prepared by the CVD method deposited on GaAs and Quart substrate. We have confirmed existence of graphene on each substrate by the micro-Raman spectroscopy. Next, we conducted magneto-absorption measurements in magnetic field up to 120 T by the single-turn coil (STC) method. We could observe absorption peak at 65 T and 100 T, respectively, probably arising from the LL inter-band transitions.

  • This paper reports on a study of LiNiZn-ferrite composite as a radiation absorbent material (RAM). The electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers are composed of an EM wave absorbing material and a polymeric binder. The surface morphology, chemical composition, weight percent of the ferrite composite of the toroid sample, magnetic properties, and return loss are investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and network analyzer. For preparing the absorbing sheet, chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) is used as a polymeric binder. The EM wave absorption properties of the prepared samples were studied at 4 - 8 GHz. We can confirm the effects of the thickness of the samples for absorption properties. An absorption bandwidth of more than a 10-dB return loss shifts toward a lower frequency range along with an increase in the thickness of the absorber.

  • We propose an evaluation method of the relative content of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) in SWCNT soot synthesized by arc discharge using UV-VIS-NIR absorption spectroscopy. In this method, we consider the absorbance of semiconducting and metallic SWCNTs together to calculate the relative content of SWCNTs with respect to a highly purified reference. Our method provides the more reliable and realistic evaluation of SWCNT content with respect to the whole carbonaceous content than the previously reported method.

  • To investigate optical properties of (V, Pr)-doped $ZrSiO_4$ green pigments, samples were prepared by the ceramic method using NaF and NaCl as mineralizers. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The changes of color in the samples during heating and effect of mineralizers were studied in terms of valence of the vanadium and praseodymium in the zircon matrix. (V, Pr)-doped $ZrSiO_4$ pigments give rise to green coloration in $800^{\circ}C$. The oxidation state of V and Pr ions of pigments in the glazed samples were confirmed by UV-Vis absorption spectra. This absorption spectra showed three typical bands of trivalent Pr at the 445, 480~490, 592 nm due to f-f transitions and two broad bands of 302~380, 400~500 nm due to f-d transitions of tetravalent Pr. According to the increasing amounts of $Pr_6O_{11}$, the two broad bands showed decreasing intensity at 290, 640 nm due to d-d transitions of tetravalent V.

  • We have developed laser absorption spectroscopy system for the measurement of excited Xe atoms in micro-discharged AC-PDP plasma. In this study, we have measured the absorption signals for the $1S_5$ xenon metastable state in the PDP cell with the various gas mixtures of Ne-Xe(1%), Ne-Xe(4%) and Ne-Xe(10%) under fixed gas pressure of 350 Torr and the eletrode gap distance of 50um. It is found that the maximum excited xenon densities are $1.2^{\ast}10^{12}\;cm^{-3}$, $1.8^{\ast}10^{12}\;cm^{-3}$ and $2.7^{\ast}10^{12}cm^{-3}$ for gas mixtures of Ne-Xe(1%), Ne-Xe(4%) and Ne-Xe(10%) respectively, in this experiment.

  • Pipe failure due to thermal fatigue and environmental regulations are increasing the importance of pipe monitoring systems in industrial plants. Since most pipe monitoring systems are focus on external crack inspected, it is necessary to temperature and concentration measuring monitoring system inside the pipe. These systems have spatial uncertainty due to sample inspection by one-point measurement. In addition, real-time measurement is not possible due to the limitation of time delay due to contact measurement. In this study, CT-TDLAS (Computed tomography-Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy) apply to overcome the limitations of existing methods. Lasers exhibiting an absorption response at a wavelength of 1395 nm were arranged in a lattice pattern on measuring cell. It showed that the inside of the pipe changed to an unstable combustion state over time.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the feasibility of a near-infrared spectroscopy technique for the rancidity prediction of soybean oil. Methods: A near-infrared spectroscopy technique was used to evaluate the rancidity of soybean oils which were artificially deteriorated. A soybean oil sample was collected, and the acid values were measured using titrimetric analysis. In addition, the transmission spectra of the samples were obtained for whole test periods. The prediction model for the acid value was constructed by using a partial least-squares regression (PLSR) technique and the appropriate spectrum preprocessing methods. Furthermore, optimal wavelength selection methods such as variable importance in projection (VIP) and bootstrap of beta coefficients were applied to select the most appropriate variables from the preprocessed spectra. Results: There were significantly different increases in the acid values from the sixth days onwards during the 14-day test period. In addition, it was observed that the NIR spectra that exhibited intense absorption at 1,195 nm and 1,410 nm could indicate the degradation of soybean oil. The PLSR model developed using the Savitzky-Golay $2^{nd}$ order derivative method for preprocessing exhibited the highest performance in predicting the acid value of soybean oil samples. onclusions: The study helped establish the feasibility of predicting the rancidity of the soybean oil (using its acid value) by means of a NIR spectroscopy together with optimal variable selection methods successfully. The experimental results suggested that the wavelengths of 1,150 nm and 1,450 nm, which were highly correlated with the largest absorption by the second and first overtone of the C-H, O-H stretch vibrational transition, were caused by the deterioration of soybean oil.
