  • Although forward osmosis desalination technology has drawn substantial attention as a next-generation desalination method, the energy efficiency of its draw solution treatment process should be improved for its commercialization. When ammonium bicarbonate is used as the draw solute, the system consists of forward-osmosis membrane modules, draw solution separation and recovery processes. Mixed gases of ammonia and carbon dioxide generated during the draws solution separation, need to be recovered to re-concentrate ammonium bicarbonate solution, for continuous operation as well as for the economic feasibility. The diluted ammonium bicarbonate solution has been proposed as the absorbent for the draw solution regeneration. In this study, experiments are conducted to investigate performance and features of the absorption corresponding to absorbent concentration. It is concluded that ammonium bicarbonate solution can be used to recover the generated ammonia and carbon dioxide. The results will be applied to design and operation of pilot-scale forward-osmosis desalination system.

  • The slow evolution of global magnetic fields and other dynamical processes in atmospheres of CP magnetic stars lead to the development of induced electric currents in all conductive atmospheric layers. The Lorentz force, which results from the interaction between a magnetic field and the induced currents, may modify the atmospheric structure and provide insight into the formation and evolution of stellar magnetic fields. This modification of the pressure-temperature structure influences the formation of absorption spectral features producing characteristic rotational variability of some spectral lines, especially the Balmer lines (Valyavin et al., 2004 and references therein). In order to study these theoretical predictions we began systematic spectroscopic survey of Balmer line variability in spectra of brightest CP magnetic stars. Here we present the first results of the program. A0p star $\Theta$ Aur revealed significant variability of the Balmer profiles during the star's rotation. Character of this variablity corresponds to that classified by Kroll (1989) as a result of an impact of significant Lorentz force. From the obtained data we estimate that amplitudes of the variation at H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, H$\gamma$ and H$\delta$ profiles reach up to $2.4\%$during full rotation cycle of the star. Using computation of our model atmospheres (Valyavin et al., 2004) we interpret these data within the framework of the simplest model of the evolution of global magnetic fields in chemically peculiar stars. Assuming that the field is represented by a dipole, we estimate the characteristic e.m.f. induced by the field decay electric current (and the Lorentz force as the result) on the order of $E {\~} 10^{-11}$ cgs units, which may indicate very fast (< < $10^{10}$ years) evolution rate of the field. This result strongly contradicts the theoretical point of view that global stellar magnetic fields of CP stars are fossil and their the characteristic decay time of about $10^{10}$ yr. Alternatively, we briefly discuss concurring effects (like the ambipolar diffusion) which may also lead to significant atmospheric currents producing the observable Lorentz force.

  • We present the results of simultaneous monitoring observations of $H_2O$ $6_{1,6}-5_{2,3}$ (22GHz) and SiO J=1-0, 2-1, 3-2 maser lines (43, 86, 129GHz) toward five post-AGB (candidate) stars, using the 21-m single-dish telescopes of the Korean VLBI Network. Depending on the target objects, 7 - 11 epochs of data were obtained. We detected both $H_2O$ and SiO maser lines from four sources: OH16.1-0.3, OH38.10-0.13, OH65.5+1.3, and IRAS 19312+1950. We could not detect $H_2O$ maser emission toward OH13.1+5.1 between the late OH/IR and post-AGB stage. The detected $H_2O$ masers show typical double-peaked line profiles. The SiO masers from four sources, except IRAS 19312+1950, show the peaks around the stellar velocity as a single peak, whereas the SiO masers from IRAS 19312+1950 occur above the red peak of the $H_2O$ maser. We analyzed the properties of detected maser lines, and investigated their evolutionary state through comparison with the full widths at zero power. The distribution of observed target sources was also investigated in the IRAS two-color diagram in relation with the evolutionary stage of post-AGB stars. From our analyses, the evolutionary sequence of observed sources is suggested as OH65.5+1.3${\rightarrow}$OH13.1+5.1${\rightarrow}$OH16.1-0.3${\rightarrow}$OH38.10-0.13, except for IRAS 19312+1950. In addition, OH13.1+5.1 from which the $H_2O$ maser has not been detected is suggested to be on the gateway toward the post-AGB stage. With respect to the enigmatic object, IRAS 19312+1950, we could not clearly figure out its nature. To properly explain the unusual phenomena of SiO and $H_2O$ masers, it is essential to establish the relative locations and spatial distributions of two masers using VLBI technique. We also include the $1.2-160{\mu}m$ spectral energy distribution using photometric data from the following surveys: 2MASS, WISE, MSX, IRAS, and AKARI (IRC and FIS). In addition, from the IRAS LRS spectra, we found that the depth of silicate absorption features shows significant variations depending on the evolutionary sequence, associated with the termination of AGB phase mass-loss.

  • This study investigated genetic, mineralogical and spectral characteristics of oil shale and coal samples in Dundgobi area, Mongolia. Based the Rock/Eval and Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis, kerogen type, hydrogen quantity, thermal maturity and depositional environment were confirmed. Moreover, the mineral composition of oil shale and coal samples were analyzed by XRD and spectroscopy. The result of Rock Eval/TOC analysis revealed that the samples of Eedemt deposit are immature to mature source rocks with sufficient hydrocarbon potential, and the kerogen types were classified as Type I, Type II and Type III kerogen. On the other hand, the samples from Shine Us Khudag deposit were mature with good to very good hydrocarbon potential rocks where kengen types are defined as Type I, Type II/III and Type III kerogen. According to the carbon and sulfur contents, the depositional environment of the both sites were defined as a freshwater depositional environment. The XRD analysis revealed that the mineral composition of oil shale and coal samples were quartz, calcite, dolomite, illite, kaolinite, montmorillonite, anorthoclase, albite, microcline, orthoclase and analcime. The absorption features of oil shale samples were at 1412 nm and 1907 nm by clay minerals and water, 2206 nm by clay minerals of kaolinite and montmorillonite and 2306 nm by dolomite. It is considered that spectral characteristics on organic matter content test must be tested for oil shale exploration using remote sensing techniques.

  • XRD, XRF, EPMA, FT-IR, and SEM-CL studies were carried out in order to characterize gemological features of corundum from Tanzania. Fluorescence reaction of the Tanzanian corundum to short and long wave ultraviolet rays was weakly detected. Inclusions in Tanzanian corundum are divided into five types, Type I is fluid-rich inclusion, Type II is gas-rich inclusion, Type III is liquid $CO_{2}$ inclusion, Type IV is solid-rich inclusion, and Type V is a mixture of fluid and solid inclusion and daughter minerals. SEM-CL images show twin structure with growth texture, microphenocryst of spinel solid inclusions, massive and growth texture. Ruby and sapphire from Tanzania are distinctly distinguished by concentrations of Fe and Cr, and plotted in the particular field at $Al_{2}O_{3}/100-Cr_{2}O_{3}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ diagram. According to FT-IR analysis, all corundum specimens from Tanzania showed the similar patterns, and absorption peaks of $455.09\~459.23\;cm^{-1},\;603.15\~611.71\;cm^{-1},\;1509.00\~1655.05\;cm^{-1}\;and\;3436.41\~3468.87\;cm^{-1}$. These distinctive characteristics mentioned above can be used to identify the locality and source of corundum stones from Tanzania.

  • The solubility of U(VI) hydrolysis products was determined by using a laser-induced breakdown detection (LIBD) technique. The experiments were carried out at uranium concentrations in range from $2{\times}10^{-4}\;M\;to\;4{\times}10^{-6}\;M$, pH values between 3.8 and 7.0, the constant ionic strength of 0.1 M $NaClO_4$ and the temperature of $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. The solubility product of U(VI) hydrolysis products was calculated from LIBD results by using the hydrolysis constants selected in NEA-TDB. The solubility product extrapolated to zero ionic strength, ${\log}K^{\circ}_{sp}=-22.85{\pm}0.23$ was calculated by using a specific ion interaction theory (SIT). The spectral features of ionic species in uranium solutions were investigated by using a conventional UV-visible absorption spectrophotometer and a fluorophotometer, respectively, $(UO_2)_2(OH)_2^{2+}\;and\;(UO_2)_3(OH)_5^+$ were dominant species at uranium concentration of $2{\times}10^{-4}\;M$.

  • This study investigated the crystal growth, crystalline structure and the basic optical properties of $PbSnSe/BaF_2$ epilayers. The PbSnSe epilayer was grown on $BaF_2$(111) insulating substrates using a hot wall epitaxy (HWE) technique. It was found from the analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns that $PbSnSe/BaF_2$ epilayer was grown single crystal with a rock-salt structure oriented along [111] the growth direction. Using Rutherford back scattering, the atomic ratios of the PbSnSe was found to be proper stoichiometric. The best values for the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the DCXRD was 162 arcsec for PbSnSe epilayer. The epilayer-thickness dependence of the FWHM of the DCXRD shows that the quality of the $PbSnSe/BaF_2$ is as expected. The dielectric function ${\varepsilon}(E)$ of a semiconductor is closely related to its electronic energy band structure and such relation can be drawn from features around the critical points(CPs) in the optical spectra. The real and imaginary parts(${\varepsilon}1$ and ${\varepsilon}2$) of the dielectric function ${\varepsilon}$ of PbSe were measured, and the observed spectra reveal distinct structures at energies of the E1, E2 and E3 CPs. These data are analyzed using a theoretical model known as the model dielectric function (MDF). The optical constants related to dielectric function such as the complex refractive index ($n^*=n+ik$), absorption coefficient (${\alpha}$) and normal-incidence reflectivity (R) are also presented for $PbSnSe/BaF_2$.

  • Up to now, better convenience and portability were important factors in the development of the cosmetics and achieved by immersing low viscosity makeup water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion into the impregnation material. Conventionally, polyurethane sponges having porous network structures and hard textures have been dominantly used. It has an advantage of easy to manufacture because of its good impregnation property due to its structural characteristics. However, it releases emulsion too much at first use, and shows unexpected dramatic decline during the period of usage. In this study, we studied on makeup W/O emulsion with various features and developed the new foaming sponge, which showed excellent formability and proper absorption and discharge ability of cosmetic composition through the combination of natural rubber (NR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR). This impregnation material is characterized by the softness of elasticity like a rubber, high elongation and uniform output. We confirmed that this material can be used to develop makeup products using various oils depending on polarity and controlling the viscosity of the makeup W/O emulsion. Thus, it is concluded that these results provide valuable information in developing new cosmetics impregnation materials.

  • Thin films of $V_2O_3$, $VO_2$, and $V_2O_5$ were obtained from a single precursor solution through post-annealing processes under different annealing conditions. As annealed in air, the deposited films became $V_2O_5$ with orthorhombic crystal structure, while they were $V_2O_3$ and $VO_2$ with rhombohedral and monoclinic crystal structure as annealed in vacuums with base pressure of $1{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr and with 10 mTorr $O_2$ pressure, respectively. Electrical and optical measurements indicated that the $V_2O_5$ and $VO_2$ films are semiconducting, while the $V_2O_3$ films are metallic at room temperature. Chromium doping in $VO_2$ resulted in a decrease of the resistivity and changed the conduction type from n-type to p-type. 10% Cr-doped $VO_2$ films were found to have orthorhombic crystal structure, which is different from that of the undoped $VO_2$. Spectral features in the optical absorption spectra of all the films were interpreted as the transitions involving O 2p and V 3d bands. The crystal-field splittings between $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ states of the V 3d bands are estimated to be about 1.5 and 1.0 eV for $V_2O_5$ and $VO_2$, respectively.

  • After examining the difference in the photosynthesis rate of corn according to the planting distance, the distance of $40{\times}40cm$ showed the lowest rate by 23 days after transplanting (May 31); however, there was no significant difference in the photosynthesis rate due to increased salt tolerance in the plant as time went by. As for the difference in growth features of a plant, the planting distance of $40{\times}40cm$ showed a growing disorder due to the influence of salt by 23 days after trans-plantation (May 31); however, there was a desirable growth as time went by. For the difference in the salt content within a plant, the planting distance of $40{\times}40cm$ tended to be higher than other planting distances, and the K+ content is much higher than other kinds of salt after examining the difference in salt absorption. As for the correlation between saline components within a plant, there was a significant negative correlation among $K^{+},\;Ca^{2+},\;and\;Na^{+}$ while there was a significant positive correlation among $Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+}$, and Na+. After examining the effectiveness of salt removal from soil according to com cultivation, the planting distance of $30{\times}30cm$ showed a remarkable decrease by 37 days, compared with 23 days, after transplantation in $K^{+}$ by 28%, $Ca^{2+}$ by 36.6%, $Mg^{2+}$ by 30.6%, and $Na^{+}$ by 22.9%. And the salt content is higher in surface soil than in subsoil.
