A Proposal on Evaluation Method of Neutron Absorption Performance to Substitute Conventional Neutron Attenuation Test

  • Background: For a verification of newly-developed neutron absorbers, one of guidelines on the qualification and acceptance of neutron absorbers is the neutron attenuation test. However, this approach can cause a problem for the qualifications that it cannot distinguish how the neutron attenuates from materials. Materials and Methods: In this study, an estimation method of neutron absorption performances for materials is proposed to detect both direct penetration and back-scattering neutrons. For the verification of the proposed method, MCNP simulations with the experimental system designed in this study were pursued using the polyethylene, iron, normal glass and the vitrified form. Results and Discussion: The results show that it can easily test neutron absorption ability using single absorber model. Also, from simulation results of single absorber and double absorbers model, it is verified that the proposed method can evaluate not only the direct thermal neutrons passing through materials, but also the scattered neutrons reflected to the materials. Therefore, the neutron absorption performances can be accurately estimated using the proposed method comparing with the conventional neutron attenuation test. Conclusion: It is expected that the proposed method can contribute to increase the reliability of the performance of neutron absorbers.

A Study on Smart Heat Radiating Sheet for Protecting Electronic Equipments on the Ship

  • In this paper, we developed a Smart Heat Radiating Sheet(SHRS) having the absorption ability of more than 15 dB, and thermal conduction rate more than 20 W/mk for port logistics RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) system by using AMP(Amorphous Metal Powder) and shielding sheet. Firstly, the EM(Electro_Magnetic) wave absorber samples were fabricated by using AMP and CPE (Chlorinated Polyethylene) with different composition ratios of 80 : 20 wt.% and 85 : 15 wt.%, respectively. Secondly, we fabricated the Smart Heat Radiating Sheet using the shielding sheet to attach EM Wave Absorber. As a result, the Smart Heat Radiating Sheet with absorption ability of 16 dB at 433 MHz and thermal conduction rate is 24 W/mk has been developed with the composition ratio of Amorphous Metal Powder : CPE = 85 : 15 wt.% and thickness of 5.5 mm.

  • 우수한 휴대폰용 전파흡수체를 개발하기 위해 실리콘을 지지재로 한 Mn-Zn 페라이트를 개발하여 전파흡수능을 조사하였다. 본 연구에서는 시편의 제작온도가 전파흡수능에 미치는 영향을 연구하였으며 온도가 증가함에 따라 tan $\delta$ > 1을 나타내는 주파수가 저주파로 이동하는 경향을 나타내었고 이로 인해 70 $^{\circ}C$에서 제작한 1 mm 두께의 전파흡수체가 휴대전화의 중심사용 주파수인 1.8 GHz 부근에서 3.4 ㏈인 우수한 흡수능을 나타내었다.

솔잎 추출물의 염색성과 기능성 (제1보) -솔잎 추출물의 특성과 셀룰로오스섬유에 대한 염색성- (Dyeability and Functionality of Pine Needles Extract (part I) -Characteristics of Pine Needles Extract and Dyeing Properties of Cellulose Fiber-)

  • Dyeing properties of cotton and ramie fabrics with pine needles colorants were studied by investigating the analysis of pine needles colorants, the effect of dyeing conditions (such as dye concentration, dyeing temperatures and times on dye uptakes), effect of mordants, and color change. The various colorfastness of dyed fabrics were evaluated for practical use; in addition, the antimicrobial ability, ultraviolet-cut ability, and deodorant ability were estimated. In the UV-Visible spectrum, the wavelength of the maximum absorption for pine needles extract was 285nm, and pine needles colorants produced a yellow color. From FT-IR and GC-MS results, it was assumed that chromophoric substance from pine needles extracts were mixed with flavonol tannin and flavanol tannin. An increased dyeing concentration resulted in a larger dye uptake and a Freundlich absorption isotherm was obtained. A larger dye uptake occurred as the dyeing time and temperature increased. Post-mordanting was more effective than pre-mordanting and the dye uptake of fabrics improved by mordanting. The colorfastness of dyed fabrics showed a low rating; however, colorfastness to washing and dry cleaning of cotton fabrics mordanted with N.Cu, and friction fastness of ramie fabric mordanted with Cu improved. The dyed fabrics showed very good antimicrobial abilities of 99.9%. In addition, the ultraviolet-cut ability and deodorant ability improved in fabrics dyed with pine needles extracts.

In the UV-Visible spectrum, the wavelength of the maximum absorption for bamboo stems and leaves extracts was found to be 280nm and 295nm, respectively; in addition, bamboo colorants produced a yellow color. An increased dyeing concentration resulted in a larger dye uptake and a Freundlich absorption isotherm was obtained. A larger dye uptake occurred as the dyeing time and temperature increased. The post-mordanting was more effective than pre-mordanting. Mordants, Fe and N.Fe, were effective for an increased dye uptake. The color of fabrics mordanted with Cu and N.Cu changed to GY. Regardless of mordanting, the colorfastness on the washing of dyed fabrics showed a low rating compared to other fastness. Mordanting adversely affected the lightfastness of dyed fabric. The dyed fabric showed very good antimicrobial abilities of 99.9%. In addition, the ultraviolet-cut ability and deodorant ability improved in cotton fabric dyed with bamboo extracts.

  • 본 논문은 상대방으로부터 탐지를 최소화시키는 스텔스 기술을 분석하고, 대부분의 레이더 반사 단면적 감소는 형상화로부터 기인되며, 특별한 부위에는 RAM을 이용하여 최소화 시키는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 RF 스텔스를 위한 밀리미터파 대역의 레이더 반사 단면적을 최소화시키는 측면에서 94 GHz에서 전파흡수량 17 dB로 98 %를 흡수하는 RAM을 설계 및 제작하였다. 결과적으로 개발된 RAM을 플랫폼에 적용시 상대방으로부터 레이더 탐지거리를 62 % 축소시키는 효과를 얻을 수 있다.

Study on the Interaction between Curcumin and Ethylamines by Absorption and Fluorescence Spectroscopic Techniques

  • The interaction between curcumin(1,7-bis[4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) and ethylamines was studied in DMSO:$H_2O$(5:1, v/v) using absorption and fluorescence measurements. The association constant, $K_{ass}$, and the Stern-Volmer constants were calculated by the Benesi-Hildebrand and Stern-Volmer equation, respectively. Curcumin displayed marked UV-Vis absorption changes and highly responsive fluorescence quenching in the presence of ethylamine and the quenching ability was enhanced almost linearly with the concentration of ethylamines. The apparent Stern-Volmer constant measured for the ethylamine-curcumin system was about 1000-fold greater than that of the triethylamine-curcumin system, indicating considerably greater quenching efficiency of ethylamines.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the Physical characteristics of cement mortar about humidity control on indoors and wall crack restraint. Experiments were conducted on the strength, water absorption coefficient, drying-shrinking crack, length change, cracks of mortar plaster bases according to mixture rate by mixing cellulose fiber and diatomite into cement mortar. The excellent tensile & bending reinforcement efficiency of cellulose fiber and void filling ability of diatomite proved to be suppressing cracks of cement. And diatomite seems to improve moisture-protection efficiency of cement mortar because of its high water absorption ratio and slow drying speed.

  • Many studies have clarified that poly(${\gamma}$-glutamic acid) (PGA) increases the solubility of $Ca^{2+}$, suggesting that PGA enhances calcium absorption in the small intestine. However, there has been no report on the specific interaction between PGA and $Ca^{2+}$ in water. We studied the aqueous solution properties of PGA calcium salt (PGA-Ca complex). The chelating ability and binding strength of PGA for $Ca^{2+}$ were evaluated. The PGA-Ca complex was soluble in water, in contrast to the insolubility of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) calcium salt, and the chelating ability of PGA for $Ca^{2+}$ was almost the same as that of PAA. The globular conformation of the PGA-Ca complex in water was estimated by SEC and viscosity measurements. The chelation ability of PGA for $Ca^{2+}$ was examined by $^1H$ NMR. The present study showing the characteristics of the PGA-Ca complex will provide useful information about the calcium absorption by PGA in vivo.

  • In this paper, collapse test of thin-walled structures, which are widely used in the vehicle members is carried out to observe the dependence of cross-sectional forms and materials on the absorbed energy in the viewpoint of crashworthiness. Also, specimens consist of two kinds (Al, CFRP) with various thickness. Comparisons of circular specimens are made to find characteristics of the different specimens on the absorption ability according to specimen thickness and materials.
