  • Fretting is the oscillatory motion with very small amplitudes, which usually occurs between two solid surfaces in contact. Fretting wear is the removal of material from contacting surfaces through fretting action. Fretting wear of steam generator tubes in nuclear power plant becomes a serious problem in recent years. The materials for the tubes usually are Inconel 690 (I-690) and Inconel 600 (I-600). In this paper, fretting wear tests for I-690 and I-600 were performed under various applied loads in water at room temperature. Results showed that the fretting wear loss of I-690 and I-600 tubes was largely influenced by stick-slip. The fretting wear mechanisms were the abrasive wear in slip regime and the delamination wear in stick regime. Also, I-690 had somewhat better wear resistance than I-600.

  • The wear resistance of P-bronze which is widely used as worm gear material was investigated. In order 1o study the effect of additional elements on the wear resistance of Pbronze, the applied load and sliding time were selected as variables, and SCM4, were used as against metal. The addition of Fe improve wear resistance, for it precipities hard Fe$_3$ P phase and the work hardening coefficients are lowered due to decreasing solubility of P. When Fe is added in conventional P-bronze, the alloy is rather sliding than forming wear debris by frictional force during wear test. Experimental results indicated that the wear mechanisms for P-bronze are mainly consisted of abrasive wear due to Beilby layer forming mechanism and adhesive wear due to thermally activated wear mechanism. Moreover, the weight loss is decreased in accordance with increasing load and time. However the rate of wear loss is decreased as the sliding time is increased.

  • The friction and wear characteristics of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The volume fraction of silica particles was 19%. The cumulative wear volume and wear rate of these materials on counterpart roughness were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, deformation of matrix, ploughing, debonding of particles, fracture of particles and microcracking by scanning electric microscopy photograph of the tested surface. The cumulative wear volume showed a tendency to increase with increase of sliding distance. The wear rate of these composites tested indicated low value as increasing the sliding distance.

  • Composite resins are the most commonly used dental restorative materials after minimally invasive dental procedures, and they offer an aesthetically pleasing appearance. An ideal composite restorative material should have wear properties similar to those of tooth tissues. Wear refers to the damaging, gradual loss or deformation of a material at solid surfaces. Depending on the mechanism of action, wear can be categorized as abrasive, adhesive, fatigue, or corrosive. Currently used composite resins cover a wide range of materials with diverse properties, offering dental clinicians multiple choices for anterior and posterior teeth. In order to improve the mechanical properties and the resistance to wear of composite materials, many types of monomers, silane coupling agents, and reinforcing fillers have been developed. Since resistance to wear is an important factor in determining the clinical success of composite resins, the purpose of this literature review was to define what constitutes wear. The discussion focuses on factors that contribute to the extent of wear as well as to the prevention of wear. Finally, the behavior of various types of existing composite materials such as nanohybrid, flowable, and computer-assisted design/computer-assisted manufacturing materials, was investigated, along with the factors that may cause or contribute to their wear.

  • This paper reports the wear characteristics of two types of coating materials, which are $Cr_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$, by coated plasma thermal spray method. The wear test was carried out under air, grease, and bearing fluid conditions. The wear testing machine of a pin-on disk type were used to measure friction forces, friction coefficients and the weight losses of the coating specimens on the various sliding velocity and loading condition. The wear surface of specimens were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs.

  • In the machining of glass fiber reinforced plastics(GFRP), turning has been often used. But the most of past studies have been interested in the effect of fiber orientation on tool wear. In this study, the effects of fiber contents and cutting speeds on tool wear, cutting force and surface roughness are investigated experimentally. By proper selection of cutting tool, the variables are cutting speed, fiber contents and cutting length with fixed feed rate and depth of cut. The fiber contents have major effects on coated tool wear which observed as abrasive wear type.

  • Microstructure and characteristics of the SiCp/Al-4.5wt%Cu-1wt%Mg composites fabricated by the combination of the compocasting and the pressurized continuous casting process, which is one of the processes to decrease the limitations of the size, and shops of the products, are investigated. The main results are as follows: 1) the SiCp/Al alloy matrix composites can be made continuously 2) as the amount of SiCp addition increases; (1) the degree of directional solidification of matrix structure decreases, and that of SiCp dispersion improves, (2) wear resistance improves, and especially these composites show the excellent wear resistance under the high sliding speed and high final load condition, (3) wear mechanism of these composites is changed from adhesive wear into abrasive wear, and the tendency of that becomes outstanding with increasing sliding speed.

  • The advantages of Thermal sprayed coatings as a replacement for cast iron liners are reduced weight, better heat transfer and reduced cost. One of the most important performance attributes of a cylinder bore coating is its wear resistance, since it must survive the abrasive sliding of both the piston rings and the piston skirt. In this study, composite powders were prepared by ball milling of Al-13Si-3Mg(wt%) alloy with SiC particles. The concentrations of SiC were 40 and 60wt%. The composite powders were sprayed using Metco-9MB plasma torch. Plasma sprayed coatings were heat-treated at 500℃ for 3 hours. The wear resistances of the plasma sprayed coatings were found to improve with heat treatment and superior to the commercially available G.C.I.(gray cast iron). AlSiMg-40SiC heat-treated coatings showed the best wear resistance in this study.
