  • Fuel costs represent one of the most substantial expenses for airlines, accounting for 20% - 36% of the airline's total operating cost. The present study discusses the so-called discretionary fuel that is additionally loaded at the discretion of airlines to cover unforeseen variations from the planned flight operations. The proper range of the discretionary fuel to be loaded for economic flight operations was estimated by applying Monte Carlo simulation technique. With this simulation model for loading discretionary fuel, airlines cannot only reduce the total amount of fuel to be consumed but also minimize the risk of unplanned flight disruptions caused by insufficient fuel on board. Airlines should be able to guarantee proper risk management processes for fuel boarding by carrying enough fuel to high-risk airports. This study would provide a practical guideline for loading proper amounts of discretionary fuel. Future researchers should be encouraged to improve this study by elaborating the weather variable.

  • "Science" journal is one of the world's top academic journals. Many researchers are trying to publish their work in Science, and only a few selected novel papers are accepted. However, we think that this kind of process cannot continue forever. In this paper, we show that there is a limit to the number of Science papers that can be written. Therefore, the day will come when Science cannot publish new papers anymore. Using a similar method, we estimate the maximum limit on the number of pop songs that can be composed. By extending our discussion to all kinds of digital contents, we derive a mathematical expression for the maximum number of digital contents of a certain type that can be created. These results imply that someday man will not be able to produce new papers or new digital contents anymore. This conclusion raises deep philosophical questions.

  • This study aims to analyze service improvement and success factors of electric scooter sharing service companies by using text mining after collecting reviews of shared electric scooter service applications among various models of sharing economy. In this study, the factors of satisfaction and dissatisfaction of service users were identified using the term frequency inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) technique, and topics for each keyword were extracted using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) Topic Modeling technique. According to the analysis results, the main topics were entertainment, safety, service area, application complaints, use complaints, convenience, and mobility. Using the analysis results of this study, employees and researchers of electric scooter sharing service companies will be able to contribute to the improvement and success of related services.

  • This article is meant to serve as an introduction to the development of digital culture map of Daesoon Jinrihoe. Recently there has been frequent discussion over the need to provide information on the website of Daesoon Jinrihoe's Yeoju Headquarters Temple Complex, and the further need to produce a digital culture map of Daesoon Jinrihoe. The production of digital culture map of Daesoon Jinrihoe has the advantage of being able to publicize and enhance its status worldwide beyond simply building digital archives, collecting data, visualizing Daesoon Jinrihoe materials, and acquiring tools for research on Daesoon Jinrihoe. Therefore, the development of Daesoon Jinrihoe's digital culture map is expected to be a step for Daesoon Jinrihoe to leap forward globally. Next in the process would be the study of data. The current status of Daesoon Jinrihoe's data and analysis of the contents will enable researchers to proceed to the next stage. In the production of digital culture map of Daesoon Jinrihoe, the next step to be studied after data research is to review precedents in the production of digital culture maps related to religion. Researchers will be able to review domestic precedents and overseas precedents, and based on those, it will be possible to suggest a direction for developing Daesoon Jinrihoe's digital culture map.

  • Research ethics is the basic attitude for researchers. Thanks to our predecessors we are able to conduct systematic studies. The current trend of results and the amount of study-oriented assessments make the side effect that researchers conduct SCI (Science Citation Index) studies. Since the Declaration of Helsinki, the importance of the right, safety and welfare for human participants have improved. In the present study, I looked into other countries' standpoints concerning the subject of the responsibilities for research ethics and compared them with Korean's standpoint. Recently, the Ministry of Health and Welfare revised the laws for bioethics and safety. In the point of bioethics, I checked out the function, exemption and process of the Institutional Review Board for the future researcher. It is suggested to use the research note to verify a study procedure and protect oneself from research misconducts.

  • This study's aim was to investigate their opinions to improve the educational system for dental hygienists on the basis of their duties as dental hygienists. The qualitative study was conducted among 19 dental hygienists at Daejeon, Korea from July to August 2016. Two researchers followed each subject for working hours in a day and recorded all the tasks and time to take for each task. After one day, the researchers met each subject and conducted face-to-face interviews to investigate the opinions about the dental hygiene curriculum and national board examination. The main duties recognized by more than half of the subjects were oral disease prevention including scaling and dental treatment assistance. The subjects' minority opinion about the main duties included radiography, impression taking, dental implant surgery assistance, orthodontic treatment, patient counseling, dental management and staff management, and oral health education. The most important tasks perceived by the subjects were prosthetic and implant impressions, scaling and implant surgery assistance. The subjects' minority opinion about the most important duties included patient counseling and making temporary crowns. The most difficult tasks answered by the subjects were prosthetic and implant impressions and dental implant surgery assistance. The subjects' minority opinion about it included patient counseling, scaling, and making temporary crowns. They mentioned that their curriculum in college was different from the actual work and the national board examination was not reflective of their real duties. We found out Korean dental hygienists had a lot of roles as dental assistants, dental business managers, and so on. We suggest that the law, curriculum and national board examination for dental hygienists should be revised to be able to reflect the reality of the clinical field.

  • Since human genome project finished, the cost for human genome analysis has decreased very rapidly. This results in the sharp increase of human genome data to be analyzed. As the need for fast analysis of very large bio data such as human genome increases, non IT researchers such as biologists should be able to execute fast and effectively many kinds of bio applications, which have a variety of characteristics, under HPC environment. To accomplish this purpose, a biologist need to define a sequence of bio applications as workflow easily because generally bio applications should be combined and executed in some order. This bio workflow should be executed in the form of distributed and parallel computing by allocating computing resources efficiently under HPC cluster system. Through this kind of job, we can expect better performance and fast response time of very large bio data analysis. This paper proposes a workflow-based data analysis system specialized for bio applications. Using this system, non-IT scientists and researchers can analyze very large bio data easily under HPC environment.

  • Multi-core processors can improve parallelism of application processes and thus can enhance the system throughput. Researchers have recently revealed that the processor affinity is an important factor to determine network I/O performance due to architectural characteristics of multi-core processors; thus, many researchers are trying to suggest a scheme to decide an optimal processor affinity. Existing schemes to dynamically decide the processor affinity are able to transparently adapt for system changes, such as modifications of application and upgrades of hardware, but these have limited access to characteristics of application behavior and run-time information that can be collected heuristically. Thus, these can provide only sub-optimal processor affinity. In this paper, we define meaningful system variables for determining optimal processor affinity and suggest a tool to gather such information. We show that the implemented tool can overcome limitations of existing schemes and can improve network bandwidth.

  • In this paper, a web-based seed phenotype visualization support system is proposed to extract and visualize data such as the surface color, length, area, perimeter and compactness of seed, which is phenotype information from the image of soybean/rice seeds. This system systematically stores data extracted from seeds in databases, and provides a web-based user interface that facilitates the analysis of data by researchers using data tables and charts. Conventional seed characteristic studies have been manually measured by humans, but the system developed in this paper allows researchers to simply upload seed images for analysis and obtain seed's numerical data after image processing. It is expected that the proposed system will be able to obtain time efficiency and remove spatial restriction, if it is used in seed characterization research, and it will be easy to analyze through systematic management of research results and visualization of the phenotype characteristics.
