The purpose of the present study is to investigate fluid mechanical interactions between two major abdominal aortic branches under both steady and pulsatile flow conditions. Two model branching systems are considered: two branches emerging off the same side of the aorta (model 1) and two branches emerging off the opposite sides of the aorta (model 2). At higher Reynolds numbers, the velocity profiles within the branches in model 1 are M-shaped due to the strong skewness, while the loss of momentum in model 2 due to turning effects at the first branch leads to the absence of a reversed flow region at the entrance of the second branch. The wall shear stresses are considerably higher along the anterior wall of the abdominal aorta than along the posterior wall, opposite the celiac-superior mesenteric arteries. The wall shear stresses are higher in the immediate vicinity of the daughter branches. The peak wall shear stress in model 2 is considerably lower than that in the model 1. Although quantitative comparisons of our results with the physiological data have not been possible, our results provide useful information for the localization of early atherosclerotic lesions.
An 11-year-old spayed female maltese was presented for abdominal distention, dysuria and dyschezia. Panting and heart murmur was found and abdominal palpation was difficult due to increased abdominal pressure. A soft tissue mass, $6{\times}3cm$ in size, was identified radiographically in pelvic canal, displacing the descending colon to the medioventral direction and the urinary bladder cranially. On ultrasonography, the mass consisted of homogeneous hypoechoic parenchyma containing the focal hyperechoic region ($1.6{\times}1.5cm$). The mass had distinct margin and no connection with adjacent organs. It was considered as a mass originating from the retroperitoneal cavity. Additional diagnostic procedures were not advanced because of the owner's request, and only a surgical excision of the mass was performed to alleviate the dysuria and dyschezia. Histopathologic examination and immunohistochemistry determined the mass as a soft tissue sarcoma and excluded hemangiosarcoma and osteosarcoma, both are the most common types of the retroperitoneal tumors. This report described non-vascular soft tissue sarcoma originating from the retroperitoneal cavity in a maltese dog.
Ultrastructure of the excretory duct of the small ampullate gland in the orb web spider, Nephila clavata L. Koch are studied with light and electron microscopes. The small ampullate glands, located near the midline portion of the abdominal cavity, are connected with the spigots(large spinning tubes) on the middle spinnerets and composed of three parts which are the excretory duct, the storage sac and the convoluted tail. The excretory duct of this gland is enclosed by a thin layer of the outer connective tissues. By the morphology of the apical cuticles and internal textures of the epithelial cells, the duct is subdivided into two regions which are proximal duct region near the sac and distal duct region near the spinnerets. At the distal region of the ducts, the subcuticle which had the function of water removal form the progenetive silk material is well developed, whereas at the proximal region this cuticle disappeared and instead of these, endocuticle is developed. Moreover the epithelium of the distal duct region is composed of columnar epithelial cells, but at the proximal region the epithelium is changed to squamous or cuboidal forms. In the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells, rough endoplasmic reticula, Golgi comlexes and large secretory vesicles related to the production of the cuticular materials are well developed. And between the adjacent epithelial cells, specialized septate junction and desmosomes are formed along the plasma membrane.
Cholelithiasis and choledolithiasis were diagnosed with serum chemistry, abdominal radiography and ultrasonography in a 2.0 kg, 10 year-old Yorkshire Terrier dog showing signs of anorexia, vomiting, iceterus and depression. In serum chemistry, the level of alanine transferase, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate transferase, total bilitrubin and direct bilirubin were elevated. On abdominal radiographs, focal lesions with increased radiopacity were seen in the hepatic region and the size of liver was increased. In ultrasonographic examination, it were seen that distension of gall bladder, hypercehoic change of liver, obstruction of cystic duct by calcult and calculi in the gall bladder. Cholecystectomy was undertaken and there were no complications after the operation.

Small bowel injury resulting from unforeseen penetration of the anterior annulus fibrosus and longitudinal ligament is a rare complication of lumbar microdiscectomy. The patient complained of abdominal tenderness and distention immediately after microdiscectomy for L4-5 and L5-S1 disc herniation. Using abdominal computed tomography, we found several foci of air overlying the anterior aspect of the vertebral body at the L5-S1 level. Segmental resection of the small bowel including small tears and primary anastomosis of the jejunum were performed. Here, we present a case of intestinal perforation after lumbar microdiscectomy and discuss technical methods to prevent this complication with a review of literature.
Hepatic encephalophthy was diagnosed with serum chemistry, abdominal radiography and ultrasonography in a 2.6kg, 4 year-old maltese dog showing signs of hypersalivation, involutary spasm of facial muscles, ataxia, behavior abnormalities like dullness, sleep disorder, restlessness. In serum chemistry, the level of alanine transferase and aspartate trasferase was mildly elevated, ammonia was severely increased. On abdominal radio-graphs, the size of liver was mildly decreased. In ultrasonographic examination, diffuse lesion with hyperechoic change and decreased vasculature were seen in the hepatic region. But vascular abnormalities of liver were not observed. Drug and dietary therapy were undertaken and severities of clinical sign were alleviated.
The hepialid species, Korscheltellus lupulina (Linnaeus) is newly recorded from Korea. A female specimen of K. lupulina was collected on Jeju Island, southern Korea. This species can be distinguished by the whitish linear marking on the postmedian and dorsum of the forewing but these markings are often unseen in females. The female genitalia can be diagnosed by the semi-rounded ninth abdominal tergum, a pair of semi-rounded ninth abdominal sternum with weakly produced, semi-rounded central plate-shaped medial region, a pair of narrow band-shaped subanal plates, the short, thin ductus bursae, and the large, ball-shaped corpus bursae without a signum. Currently, there are four genera and five species of the Hepialidae distributed in Korea.

Dam jerk causes a chronic stomach disorder. The number of the patient of the Dam jerk increase in these days. However, there are no objective and quantitative study for a diagnosis of Dam jerk. Therefore, we designed diagnosis system using ultrasonic response signal for a diagnosis of Dam jerk. It was used to collect the response signal that is reflected at Dam jerk region of the abdominal. And then, the response signal at the Dam jerk region is 20% higher than the normal region. In the result. we could prove the reliability of the system.
Congenital anomalies occur at low levels in Korean antive cattle. PCR and Serum neutrlizing test against BVD, Akabane virus, Ibaraki virus, Kasba virus were examined. The results were all negative. Gross anatomical analysis was carried aout. Congenital abnormal newborn calf had 2 atropic left hindlimbs, which was nor moved autonomosly. The length of 2 atropic hindlimbs was 72 em and 48cm respectively. Both of them were curved severely at joints. Affected limbs were developed in connective tissue but lack of muscular tissue. In the abdominal region right kidney was normal. But there were two left kidneys which was half size compared with normal kidney. One of them had polycysts. In skeletal region, affected left limb is defective of head of femur and tibia.
The migration and distribution pattern of spargana in mouse body was observed after experimental infection through mouth. The spargana were obtained from the snake, Natris tigrina lateralis, caught in Hoengseong-gun, Kangwon-do. A total of 28 male mice (ICR strain), 21∼259 in body weight, were fed each with 5 scolices (and necks) of spargana and killed after 10 minutes to 14 days. Systemic autopsy was performed on each mouse to recover the spargana. The results are as follows: 1. The spargana were found to penetrate into the stomach or duodenal wall of mice as early as 10 minutes after infection. They completed the penetration within 30 minutes and appeared in abdominal cavity. It was observed that spargana did not migrate tangentially along the gut wall but directly perforated the wall. 2. After 1 hour to 1 day the majority of spargana distributed in abdominal cavity of mice except a few which migrated to muscles or subcutaneous tissues. 3. It was within 7 days that nearly all of the spargana migrated to subcutaneous tissues. Out of total 28 in number found from subcutaneous tissues, 13 distributed around neck region, 12 around trunk and other 3 on head of mice and the most common sites were submandibular and subscapular areas. There was nearly no host tissue reaction to migrating spargana. 4. The initial length of spargana given was 4 mm in average but it increased to 12 mm after 7 days and to 35 mm after 14 days. The results suggest that spargana orally given to mice penetrate the gut wall within 30 minutes followed by escaping into abdominal cavity, and after passing through thoracic cavity or abdominal wall they anally Localize in subcutaneous tissues chieay around neck region within 7 days.
