Development of Viscoelastic Finite Element Analysis Code for Pavement Structures (도로포장 구조해석을 위한 점탄성 유한요소 해석코드 개발)

  • PURPOSES: A viscoelastic axisymmetric finite element analysis code has been developed for stress analysis of asphalt pavement structures. METHODS: Generalized Maxwell Model (GMM) and 4-node isoparametric element were employed for finite element formulation. The code was developed using $C^{+}^{+}$ computer program language and named as KICTPAVE. For the verification of the developed code, a structural model of a pavement system was constructed. The structural model was composed of three layers: asphalt layer, crushed stone layer, and soil subgrade. Two types of analysis were considered for the verification: (1)elastic static analysis, (2)viscoelastic time-dependent analysis. For the elastic static analysis, linear elastic material model was assigned to all the layers, and a static load was applied to the structural model. For the viscoelastic time-dependent analysis, GMM and linear elastic material model were assigned to the asphalt layer and all the other layers respectively, and a cyclic loading condition was applied to the structural model. RESULTS: The stresses and deformations from KICTPAVE were compared with those from ABAQUS. The analysis results obtained from the two codes showed good agreement in time-dependent response of the element under the loading area as well as the surface deformation of asphalt layer, and horizontal and vertical stresses along the axisymmetric axis. CONCLUSIONS: The validity of KICTPAVE was confirmed by showing the agreement of the analysis results from the two codes.

  • In order to analyze stamping processes and to select optimum material properties of sheet steels for customer lines, 3-dimensional finite element analysis software were used. Commercial explicit finite element code, PAM-STAMP, was able to simulate 3-dimensional press formed parts with good accuracy and gave some useful results by orthogonal array experiments. Deformation of draw-bead were predicted by ABAQUS accurately, so that material selection for those parts by simulation were possible.

  • In this research, newly proposed heat source equations were calculated to predict micro distortion of small structure in laser welding and compared with experimental results which were measured using laser speckle metrology. A finite element code, ABAQUS is used for the heat transfer analysis with a three-dimensional plane assumption. The results suggest that weld distortion is varied according to the heat source of the. laser beam.

Design Study of Adhesively Bonded Structures

  • The failure responses of adhesively bonded, hat stiffened structures are studied through numerical analysis using the finite element method. The responses are evaluated numerically for the bonded hat section/substrate structures containing different combinations of materials. It is studied what kind of material combinations causes the easier crack initiation in the structure. This study is conducted under plane strain conditions and J-integral via a commercial code ABAQUS as a total critical energy release criterion was used for observation on crack initiation. Also, the influence of adhesive on the structure is studied.

  • Mechanical force acted on the rail wheel causes excessive wear and increases the maintenance cost. The present paper proposes newly designed wheel profiles in order to reduce the contact stress. Numerical analysis on the stress distribution of wheel-rail contact stress is carried out using ABAQUS, a commercial finite element code. The result of KNR1/40 conical wheel is compared to those of the proposed wheels, all of which are arc wheel profile type.

  • The Aerospace and automobile industries have need to avoid sheet-metal forming problem such as incorrect springback after forming and trimming process, excessive thinning/tearing, wrinking/perkering. It is common practice to use costly trial-and-error experimental methods to develop tooling and manufacturing process parameters. Experimentation should be complemented with computer simulation to reduce cost and leadtime in manufacturing and to influence the design of components. In this study, firstly we solved the springback problem after drawing and trimming process of KFP(F100-229) engine airsealing bearing support part(53H00) forming and studied on the effect of several process parameters on the gap between the formed blank and punch shape using the implicit F.E.M code(ABAQUS). Secondly by the three dimensional dynamic analysis using the explicit. F. E. M code (LS-DYNA3D), we studied on the effect of several process parameters which can be used for avoid tearing and wrinking during the drawing process.

  • This article presents an integrated modeling approach for coupled analysis of heat transfer and microstructure evolution in welding carbon steel. The modeling procedure utilizes commercial [mite element code ABAQUS/Standard as the platform for solving the equation of heat conduction. User subroutines that implement computational thermodynamics and kinetics models are integrated with the FEA code to compute the transient microstructure evolution. In this study, the integrated models are applied to simulate the hot-tap repair welding of carbon steel pipeline. Microstructural components are treated as user output variables. Based on the predicted microstructure and cooling rates, hardness distributions in the welds were also predicted. The predicted microstructure and hardness distribution were found in good agreement with metallographic examinations and hardness measurements. This study demonstrates the applicability of computational models for the development of welding procedure for in-service pipeline repair.

  • To examine the residual stress field resulting from stamping process for the lower control arm of a car, the explicit finite element analysis is performed for the stamping process by way of the ABAQUS Explicit. The residual stress is obtained in terms of the Von Mises stress and other parameters such as equivalent plastic strain, the change of blank thickness, the final configuration of the blank and the spring back effect are also considered.   • Studies for tube spin forming have been implemented restrictively compared to spinning process, because of the complex of deformation mechanism. Especially there were not many studies by using FEM(Finite Element Method) for overcoming restriction of upper bound method. In this paper, the tube spinning process is analyzed to produce cylindrical body made by titanium alloy. In analysis, processing parameters was obtained by using upper bound method to consider material properties of titanium alloy and finite element analysis was implemented to investigate the flatness and the elongation of the titanium alloy workpiece by using ABAQUS code. The independent variables are ; material properties of workpiece, angles of roller, reduction of diameter. Three variables, two angles of roller and reduction of diameter are optimized by using the upper bound method. In this method, we can estimate the workable power, working force and reduction of diameter, and also the flatness and the elongation of workpiece by the finite elements analysis using ABAQUS/standard. The results indicates that these variables play a critical factors of spinning process for the titanium alloy and the optimum values of these variables.
