플라즈마 전해 산화 처리한 AZ31 및 Al18B4O33w/AZ31 마그네슘 복합재료 피막의 미세구조 및 부식특성 (Microstructure and Corrosion Properties of Plasma Electrolytic Oxide Coatings on AZ31 Magnesium Matrix Composite)

  • Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment was performed on squeeze cast AZ31 alloy and $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}w/AZ31$ composite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to characterize the surface morphology and cross-section microstructure of the coating. The phase structures of the PEO coating were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion resistance of the PEO coating was evaluated by electrochemical method. The results showed that the $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ whisker on the surface of the composite was decomposed and $MgAl_2O_4$ was formed in the PEO coating layer of $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}w/AZ31$ composite during PEO treatment. As a result, the electrochemical corrosion potential of the PEO coated $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}w/AZ31$ composite was increased compared with that of AZ31 alloy.

  • A finite element analysis has been conducted to simulate direct/indirect extrusion process for AZ31 Mg alloy at various ram and die speeds. Uniaxial compression test on AZ31 Mg alloy was carried out at various strain rates and temperatures and the result was used as input data fur finite element analysis. It was found that ram speed affects the distribution of dead zone area during direct extrusion. The inhomogeneous temperature and strain distributions through the thickness direction can be simulated under the various extrusion process conditions.

  • Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were carried out to investigate the effect of loading direction on the cyclic deformation behavior and fatigue resistance of rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy. The as-received alloy showed a strong basal texture indicating that the most of basal planes of hexagonal close-packed structure were located parallel to the rolling direction. Two types of specimens whose loading directions were oriented parallel (RD) and vertical (ND) to the rolling direction. respectively, were used for the comparison. It was found that RD specimens yielded at much lower stresses during compression, while vice versa for the ND specimens, which was mainly attributed to the formation of primary twins. This anisotropic deformation behavior resulted in the different mean stresses during the cycling of RD and ND specimens, affecting the fatigue resistance of two specimens. The ND specimen showed a superior fatigue resistance as compared to the RD specimen under strain-controlled condition.

  • The films formed on AZ31B magnesium alloy were prepared from alkaline solution composed of potassium permanganate and sodium hydroxide. The immersion tests were carried out at the different concentration of sodium hydroxide and pre-treatment method in 5 minute. The morphology and the phase composition of the film were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion behavior of the film in 5.0% NaCl solution was evaluated using potentiodyanmic polarization. Open circuit potential in developing film was examined with time. The thin and transparent film was mainly composed of MgO and $Mg(OH)_2$. The film with the best corrosion resistance was obtained at $70^{\circ}C$ bath temperature, 1.6 M concentration of sodium hydroxide and chemical pre-treatment.

전신 및 주조된 Mg합금의 FSW 접합성 평가 (Evaluation of FSW Weldability of Wrought and Casting Mg Alloys)

  • Friction stir weldability of AZ31B-H24, AZ61A-F and AZ91C-F Mg alloys were studied using microstructural observation and mechanical tests. The microstructure of stir zone(SZ) was coarse in AZ31B-H24 alloy whereas it was very fine both in AZ61A-F and AZ91C-F alloys. The hardness of SZ was remarkably increased by very fine recrystallized grains both in AZ61A-F and AZ91C-F alloys. On the other hand, the hardness of SZ was decreased in AZ31B-H24 due to the coarse microstructure. In SZ, AZ91C-F alloy showed very high hardness values because of dispersion hardening of $Mg_{17}$Al$_{12}$($\beta$ phase) and Al solid solution hardening. Because of more $Mg_{ 17}Al_{12}($\beta$ phase)$ intermetallic compounds, Mg alloy with high Al content showed poor mechanical properties.s.

FSW를 이용한 AZ31B Mg합금의 접합성 평가 (Evaluation of Joint Properties of Friction Stir Welded AZ31B Mg Alloy)

  • Friction stir weldability of AZ31B Mg alloy was studied using microstructural observation and mechanical tests. Defect free joints was obtained under the condition of 2000rpm-100mm/min. In TMAZ, a lot of twin deformation were observed due to the mechanical effect of the FSW tool and thus relatively high hardness was obtained. In SZ, the twin deformation was disappeared by recovery and the hardness decreased because the. grain structure was coarsened by dynamic recrystallization and grain growth. The Al-Mn precipitates were observed throughout the joint regions. On the other hand, $$\beta$-Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ intermetallic compounds were not observed in either of the zone. The joint efficiency was about 80% and the impact value of the joint was almost equal to that of base metal.

  • Extrusion characteristics of Mg alloys were studied experimentally. The Al-Zn-Mg alloys, AZ31, AZ6l, AZ80, and AZ91 were extruded with hot hydrostatic extrusion process. The hydrostatic process was efficient to reduce surface friction and extend steady state region in extrusion which made it more convenient to examine deformation behavior of the alloys avoiding the disturbance caused by temporary contact state between billet and die, and billet and container. High pressure was cooperative to expand forming limit of the alloys which were applied on the billet during the extrusion process. Extrusion limits were traced in temperature and extrusion speed domain with changing composition of the alloying elements. Effects of process parameters on extrusion load and microstructure evolution were investigated also.

  • Since magnesium alloy has a limited formability at room temperature, forming should be carried out at the elevated temperature. If the initial grain size is small, superplasticity could be expected over $400^{\circ}C$. Using superplastic behavior, blow forming can be used to overcome the low formability of Mg alloys. In the present study, the optimization of blow forming of AZ31 alloy at the elevated temperature was investigated. Finite element simulation was carried out and verified with the blow forming experiments.

  • In this study low voltage Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) was utilized to eliminate high voltage PEO drawbacks such as high cost, dimensional deformation and porosity. Low voltage PEO produces a thin coating which causes low corrosion resistance. In order to solve such problem, 0.1~0.6M pyrophosphates were added in a bath containing 1.4M NaOH, and 0.35M Na2SiO3. 70 V PEO was conducted at 25℃ for 3 minutes. Chemical composition, morphology and corrosion resistance of the anodized coating were analyzed. The anodized film was composed of MgO, Mg2SiO4, and Mg2O7P2. The morphology of film showed appropriately dense structure and low porosity in the anodized layers. It is found that low voltage Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation in cooperation with phosphating treatment can provide a good corrosion protection for the AZ31B magnesium alloy.

  • The microstructural changes by hot extrusion of AZ31B magnesium alloy were observed, and the relation to the tensile property was examined. The tensile properties as oriented longitudinal(L), half transverse(HT) and long transverse(LT) to the extrusion direction were investigated at $20^{\circ}C,\;100^{\circ}C,\;200^{\circ}C,\;300^{\circ}C\;and\;400^{\circ}C$, respectively. As the results, many recrystallized small grains distributed uniformly in large banded microstructures formed along the extrusion direction. The grain size of as-extruded specimen was around $30\~150\;{\mu}m$. As increasing the test temperature the tensile and yield strength with respect to the angle between the axis of the tensile and the longitudinal direction in extrusion was decreased, but their elongation were increased and their deviation between L and LT specimens have disappeared from $300^{\circ}C$. This mechanical anisotropy was reduced at elevated temperatures and almost disappeared at $400^{\circ}C$. It was considered that the homogenization was occured by the recrystallization and the change of slip system was occurred during tensile test process in elevated temperatures.
