Real-time Aerial Monitoring System performs the rapid mapping in an emergency situation so that the geoinformation could be constructed in near real time. In this system, the position and attitude information from GPS/INS integration algorithm is used to perform the aerial triangulation(AT) without GCPs. Therefore, if we obtain Exterior Orientation(EO) estimates from AT sequentially, EO are used as the measurements in the Kalman filter. In this study, we simulate the GPS/IMS/Image data for an UAV-based aerial monitoring system and compare the GPS/INS/AT with and without from AT. Comparative analysis showed that result from the GPS/INS/AT with EO update is more accurate than without the update. However, when the vehicle turns, the position error significantly increases which need more analysis in the future.

KOMPSAT-3A (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-3A) was launched in March 25 2015 with specification of 0.5 meters resolution panchromatic and four 2.2 meters resolution multi spectral sensors in 12km swath width at nadir. To better understand KOMPSAT-3A positional accuracy, this paper reports a test result on the accuracy of recently released KOMPSAT-3A beta test images. A number of ground points were acquired from 1:1,000 digital topographic maps over the target area for the accuracy validation. First, the original RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) were validated without any GCPs (Ground Control Points). Then we continued the test by modeling the errors in the image space using shift-only, shift and drift, and the affine model. Ground restitution accuracy was also analyzed even though the across track image pairs do not have optimal convergence angle. The experimental results showed that the shift and drift-based RPCs correction was optimal showing comparable accuracy of less than 1.5 pixels with less GCPs compared to the affine model.

The establishment of Ground Control Points (GCPs) in UAV-Photogrammetry is a working process that requires the most time and expenditure. Recently, the rapid developments of navigation sensors and communication technologies have enabled Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to conduct photogrammetric mapping without using GCP because of the availability of new methods such as RTK (Real Time Kinematic) and PPK (Post Processed Kinematic) technology. In this study, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of RTK-UAV mapping with no GCPs compared to that of non RTK-UAV mapping. The positioning accuracy results produced by images obtained simultaneously from the two different types of UAVs were compared and analyzed. One was a RTK-UAV without GCPs and the other was a non RTK-UAV with different numbers of GCPs. The images were taken with a Canon IXUS 127 camera (focal length 4.3mm, pixel size $1.3{\mu}m$) at a flying height of approximately 160m, corresponding to a nominal GSD of approximately 4.7cm. As a result, the RMSE (planimetric/vertical) of positional accuracy according to the number of GCPs by the non-RTK method was 4.8cm/8.2cm with 5 GCPs, 5.4cm/10.3cm with 4 GCPs, and 6.2cm/12.0cm with 3 GCPs. In the case of non RTK-UAV photogrammetry with no GCP, the positioning accuracy was decreased greatly to approximately 112.9 cm and 204.6 cm in the horizontal and vertical coordinates, respectively. On the other hand, in the case of the RTK method with no ground control point, the errors in the planimetric and vertical position coordinates were reduced remarkably to 13.1cm and 15.7cm, respectively, compared to the non-RTK method. Overall, UAV photogrammetry supported by RTK-GPS technology, enabling precise positioning without a control point, is expected to be useful in the field of spatial information in the future.
In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, drones are being used in various civil engineering fields. Currently, the construction and maintenance of slopes are generally managed by manpower. This method has a risk of safety accidents, and it is difficult to accurately evaluate the slope because it is difficult to secure the vision. In this paper, the effects of RTK and GCP on the 3D model of the slope were studied by using digital images taken by the drone. GNSS coordinates were measured for nine points to compare the quality of the slope 3D model, three points of which were used as the check points and the remaining points were used as GCPs. When making the 3D model of the slope using high-accuracy geotagging images using RTK, it was found that the error at the check point decreases as the number of GCP increases. Even if GNSS was used, it was found that the error at the check points of the 3D slope model was not significant when the GCPs were applied. However, it was found that even if high-accuracy geotagging images are used using the RTK module, a significant error occur when the 3D slope model is created without applying GCPs. Therefore, it can be stated that GCP must be applied to create the 3D slope model in which information about the height as well as plane information is important.

The georeferencing accuracy of the sensory data acquired by an aerial monitoring system heavily depends on the performance of the GPS/IMU mounted on the system. The employment of a high performance but expensive GPS/IMU unit causes to increase the developmental cost of the overall system. In this study, we simulate the images and GPS/IMU data acquired by an UAV-based aerial monitoring system using an inexpensive integrated GPS/IMU of a MEMS type, and perform the image georeferencing by applying the aerial triangulation to the simulated sensory data without any GCP. The image georeferencing results are then analyzed to assess the accuracy of the estimated exterior orientation parameters of the images and ground points coordinates. The analysis indicates that the RMSEs of the exterior orientation parameters and ground point coordinates is significantly decreased by about 90% in comparison with those resulted from the direct georeferencing without the aerial triangulation. From this study, we confirmed the high possibility to develop a low-cost real-time aerial monitoring system.

In photogrammetry, GCPs (Ground Control Points) have traditionally been used to determine EOPs (Exterior Orientation Parameters) and to produce DEM (Digital Elevation Model). The existing DEM can be used as GCPs, where the observer’s approach is a difficult area, because it is very restrictive to survey in the field. For this, DEM matching should be performed. This study proposed the fusion method using ICP (Iterative Closest Point) and RT (proposed method by Rosenholm and Torlegard, 1988) in order to improve accuracy of the DEM matching. The proposed method was compared to the ICP method to evaluate its usefulness. Pseudo reference DEM with resolution 10m, and modified DEM (random-numbers are added from 0 to 2 at height; scale is 0.9; translation is 100 meters in 3-D axes; rotation is from 10° to 50° from the reference DEM) were used in the experiment. The results proposed accuracy was highest in the matching and absolute orientation. In the case of ICP, according to rotation of the modified DEM being increased, absolute orientation error is increased, while the proposed method generally showed consistent results without increasing the error. The proposed method would be applied to matching when the DEM is modified up to 30° rotation, compared to the reference DEM, based on the results of experiments. In addition when we use Drone, this method can be utilized to identify EOPs or detect 3-D surface deformation from the existing DEM of the inaccessible area.
Accurate knowledge of land use/land cover (LULC) features and their relative changes over upon the time are essential for sustainable urban management. Urban sprawl growth has been always also a worldwide concern that needs to carefully monitor particularly in a developing country where unplanned building constriction has been expanding at a high rate. Recently, remotely sensed imageries with a very high spatial/spectral resolution and state of the art machine learning approaches sent the urban classification and growth monitoring to a higher level. In this research, we classified the Quickbird satellite imagery by object-based image analysis of Dempster-Shafer (OBIA-DS) for the years of 2002 and 2015 at Karbala-Iraq. The real LULC changes including, residential sprawl expansion, amongst these years, were identified via change detection procedure. In accordance with extracted features of LULC and detected trend of urban pattern, the future LULC dynamic was simulated by using land transformation model (LTM) in geospatial information system (GIS) platform. Both classification and prediction stages were successfully validated using ground control points (GCPs) through accuracy assessment metric of Kappa coefficient that indicated 0.87 and 0.91 for 2002 and 2015 classification as well as 0.79 for prediction part. Detail results revealed a substantial growth in building over fifteen years that mostly replaced by agriculture and orchard field. The prediction scenario of LULC sprawl development for 2030 revealed a substantial decline in green and agriculture land as well as an extensive increment in build-up area especially at the countryside of the city without following the residential pattern standard. The proposed method helps urban decision-makers to identify the detail temporal-spatial growth pattern of highly populated cities like Karbala. Additionally, the results of this study can be considered as a probable future map in order to design enough future social services and amenities for the local inhabitants.
Direct Georeferencing(DG) Is based on the direct measurement of the projection centers and rotation angle of sensor through loading the GPS and INS in aircraft. The methods can offer us to acquire the exterior orientation parameters with only minimum GCPs, even the ground control process could be completely skipped. Hence, as long as securing Digital Elevation Model (DEM), it is feasible to generate digital orthophotos without performing the aerial triangulation with Ground Control Point (GCP) surveying. In this study, the DEM is automatically generated by using a image matching technique based on aerial photos and exterior orientation parameters. This is followed by producing an orthophoto from these results. Finally, accuracy analysis of the georeferencing technique for generating orthoimage indicates that RMS errors of 62cm and 76cm occurred at the X and the Y axis, respectively. This means that the results fulfill the demanding accuracy of the 1:5000 digital map. Hence, it is possible to conclude from this study that the direct georeferencing based orthoimage generation method is able to effectively digital map update.
S The need for an automated geo-positioning approach for near real-time results and to boost cost-effectiveness has become increasingly urgent. Following this trend, a new approach to automatically compensate for the bias of the rational function model (RFM) was proposed. The core idea of this approach is to remove the bias of RFM only using tie points, which are corrected by matching with the digital elevation model (DEM) without any additional ground control points (GCPs). However, there has to be a additional evaluation according to the quality of DEM because DEM is used as a core element in this approach. To address this issue, this paper compared the quality effects of DEM in the conduct of the this approach using the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) DEM with the spatial resolution of 90m. and the National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) DEM with the spatial resolution of 5m. One KOMPSAT-2 stereo-pair image acquired at Busan, Korea was used as experimental data. The accuracy was compared to 29 check points acquired by GPS surveying. After bias-compensation using the two DEMs, the Root Mean Square (RMS) errors were less than 6 m in all coordinate components. When SRTM DEM was used, the RMSE vector was about 11.2m. On the other hand, when NGII DEM was used, the RMSE vector was about 7.8 m. The experimental results showed that automated geo-positioning approach can be accomplished more effectively by using NGII DEM with higher resolution than SRTM DEM.
