High Temperature Corrosion Effect of Superheater Materials by Alkali Chlorides (염화알칼리에 의한 과열기 소재의 고온부식 영향)

  • In order to cope with environmental problems and climate change caused by fossil fuels, renewable energy supply is increasing year by year. Currently, waste energy accounts for 60% of renewable energy production. However, waste has a lower calorific value than fossil fuels and contains various harmful substances, which causes serious problems when applied to power generation boilers. In particular, the chlorine in the waste fuel increases slagging and fouling of boiler heat exchangers, leading to a reduction in thermal efficiency and the main cause of high temperature corrosion, lowering facility operation rate and increasing operating cost. In this study, the high temperature corrosion experiments of superheater materials (ASME SA213/ASTM A213 T2, T12 and T22 alloy steel) by alkali chlorides were conducted, and their corrosion characteristics were analyzed by the weight loss method and SEM-EDS. Experiments show that the higher the temperature and chloride content, the more corrosion occurs, and KCl further corrodes the materials compared to NaCl under the same condition. In addition, the higher the chromium content of the material, the better the corrosion resistance to the alkali chlorides.

Back-Calculated P-y curves from Lateral Load Tests for Railway Bridge Foundation (수평재하시험을 이용한 철도교 기초의 P-y 곡선에 관한 연구)

  • A significantly larger lateral load and moment are applied on a high speed railway bridge foundation than other bridge foundations. Therefore most of bridge foundations on Honam high speed railway project were designed by high strength steel pipe piles to resist lateral load and moment, which caused the increase of construction costs. In order to perform optimum design, it is important to estimate accurate lateral resistance when designing this type of structure. Lateral load tests were carried out based on the field design data with the purpose of examining the lateral behavioral characteristics of a railway bridge foundation. The standard load test method(ASTM D 3966) was used for field tests by applying twice of design load. Total four load tests were performed on high speed railway bridge foundations with strain gages installed by every 1m along piles to measure load-resistance characteristics under applied lateral loads. The back-calculated P-y curves from strain gages were compared with estimated P-y curves using theoretical methods based on geotechnical investment data. Back-calculated P-y curves from field tests for sand and clay ground conditions were presented in this paper, which are different from theoretical P-y curves. By using the research results of this study, more accurate estimations of pile design under lateral loads can be available for similar geotechnical conditions.

Electroless Ni-P Plating and Heat Treatments of the Coating Layer for Enhancement of the Cavitation Erosion Resistance of Vessel Propellers (선박 프로펠러의 케비테이션 침식 저항 향상을 위한 Ni-P 무전해 도금층 형성 및 열처리를 통한 미세조직 제어)

  • For enhanced cavitation erosion resistance of vessel propellers, an electroless Ni-P plating method was introduced to form a coating layer with high hardness on the surface of Cu alloy (CAC703C) used as vessel propeller material. An electroless Ni-P plating reaction generated by Fe atoms in the Cu alloy occurred, forming a uniform amorphous layer with P content of ~10 wt%. The amorphous layer transformed to (Ni3P+Ni) two phase structure after heat treatment. Cavitation erosion tests following the ASTM G-32 standard were carried out to relate the microstructural changes by heat treatment and the cavitation erosion resistance in distilled water and 3.5 wt% NaCl solutions. It was possible to obtain excellent cavitation erosion resistance through careful microstructural control of the coating layer, demonstrating that this electroless Ni-P plating process is a viable coating process for the enhancement of the cavitation erosion resistance of vessel propellers.

  • Flammable substances are used in laboratories and industrial process. The flash point (FP) is one of the most important physical properties used to determine the potential for characterizing the fire and explosion hazard of liquids. The FP data at 101.3 kPa were measured for the binary systems {toluene+ethylbenzene}, {methlycyclohenxane+ethylbenzene} and {n-heptane+ ethylbenzene}. The experiments were performed according to the standard test method (ASTM D 3278) using a SETA closed cup flash point tester. The measured FPs were compared with the values predicted using the following activity coefficient models: Wilson, Non-Random Two Liquid (NRTL), and UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC). The average absolute deviation between the predicted and measured lower FP was less than 1.74 K.

  • Understanding viscoelastic properties of composite materials is essential for the design and analysis of composite structures. Specially, the loss factor and Young's modulus must be known to develop finite element codes for a composite structure with several damping materials. In this study, an advanced technique for obtaining accurate loss factor and Young's modulus of a composite structure is introduced based on the method of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The loss factor and Young's modulus of a composite structure are measured for different temperatures by performing the test in a vibration measurement room where temperature can be controllable from 5 to 45 Celsius.

  • The main objective of this study was to investigate fiber reinforced composite materials (FRCM) with electromagnetic shielding characteristics using aluminum (Al) film and copper (Cu) meshes. This study investigated the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of fiber reinforced composites filled with Al film, Cu meshes, and nano carbon black as hybrid conductive fillers to provide the electromagnetic shielding property of the fiber reinforced composites. The coaxial transmission line method of ASTM D 4935-89 was used to measure the EMI shielding effectiveness of composites in the frequency range of 300 MHz to 1.5 GHz. The variations of SE of FRCM with Al film, fine Cu, and general Cu meshes are described. The results indicate that the FRCM having Al film exhibited up to 75 dB of SE at 1.5 GHz.

Preparation of Regenerated Cellulose Fiber via Carbonation. I. Carbonation and Dissolution in an Aqueous NaOH Solution

  • Cellulose carbonate was prepared by the reaction of cellulose pulp and $CO_2$ with treatment reagents, such as aqueous $Zncl_2$ (20-40 wt%) solution, acetone or ethyl acetate, at -5-$0^{\circ}C$ and 30-40 bar ($CO_2$) for 2 hr. Among the treatment reagents, ethyl acetate was the most effective. Cellulose carbonate was dissolved in 10% sodium hydroxide solution containing zinc oxide up to 3 wt% at -5-$0^{\circ}C$. Intrinsic viscosities of raw cellulose and cellulose carbonate were measured with an Ubbelohde viscometer using 0.5 M cupriethylenediamine hydroxide (cuen) as a solvent at $20^{\circ}C$ according to ASTM D1795 method. The molecular weight of cellulose was rarely changed by carbonation. Solubility of cellulose carbonate was tested by optical microscopic observation, UV absorbance and viscosity measurement. Phase diagram of cellulose carbonate was obtained by combining the results of solubility evaluation. Maximum concentration of cellulose carbonate for soluble zone was increased with increasing zinc oxide content. Cellulose carbonate solution in good soluble zone was transparent and showed the lowest absorbance and the highest viscosity. The cellulose carbonate and its solution were stable in refrigerator (-$5^{\circ}C$ and atmospheric pressure).

  • Many impact or drop test researches of home appliances are published, but those of toys cannot be found easily. External impacts are the primary causes of fracture of toys. For impact proof design, the finished product should pass an impact test after molding design. There are several international toy safety standards or requirements such as US CPSC(Consumer Product Safety Commission), ASTM F963-96a, EN71 and so on. The puppy robot which patrols around the house, namely, the watchdog was selected to investigate toy safety because it has considerable weight and outer panels are made of plastics. First the model of watchdog robot was obtained by 3 dimensional scan. Surface data can be generated from 3D polygon data of the watchdog. A reliable drop simulation method for the watchdog was established using Pam-crash program according to Korean toy safety standards. When there is a low impact allowance value, the molding design should be reinforced or changed. It was found that the maximum impact stress reaches the ultimate stress of panel material.

  • Recently, it is difficult to find a good soil ground due to the shortage of land for new construction site. Because of this situation, the geosynthetics are commonly used for reinforcing the substructure of the soil ground, and hence improving the bearing capacity and reducing the settlement. The geocell is one of geosynthetics and is the advanced system of geogrid. It is the way to increase earth strength and bearing capacity by using three dimension type of geocomposite. In this paper, the Horizontal permeability was determined with considering various geocell shapes. The permeability test was performed by following method of ASTM D4716(87) and potential filling material for geocell was used. The bearing capacity mechanism which enhances the soil ground with evenly maintaining the degree of the compaction was also analyzed for geocell reinforced ground.

Characterization of Potassium Based Dry CO2 Sorbents Developed for the Reduction of Side Reactions (부반응 저감 조성 K계 건식 CO2 흡수제 특성평가)

  • In this study, the effects of two materials, active alumina and CaO based inorganic binder, which cause the side reaction on the K2CO3-based solid CO2 sorbents was investigated. K2CO3-based solid sorbents called KAM series was prepared by spray drying method and then measured its physical properties and CO2 sorption capacity. Among the KAM series sorbents, KAM(0.5) maintained high CO2 sorption capacity of 7.6 wt% after 3 cycle of sorption/regeneration reaction and showed very low attrition loss as low as 3.1 % which was measured by ASTM D5757-95.
