In this article, by using experimental studies and artificial neural network has been tried to investigate the use of nano-silica as concrete admixture to reduce alkali-silica reaction. If there are reactive aggregates and alkali of cement with enough moisture in concrete, a gel will be formed. Then with high reactivity between alkali of cement and existence of silica in aggregates, this gel will expand by absorption of water, and causes expansive pressure and cracks be formed. At the time passes, this gel will reduce both durability and strength of the concrete. By reducing the size of silicate to nano, specific surface area of particles and number of atoms on the surface will be increased, which causes more pozzolanic activity of them. Nano-silica can react with calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$) and produces C-S-H gel. In this study, accelerated mortar bar specimens according to ASTM C 1260 and ASTM C 1567, with different mix proportions were prepared using aggregates of Kerman, such as: none admixture and plasticizer, different proportions of nano-silica separately. By opening the moulds after 24 hour and curing in water at $80^{\circ}C$ for 24 hour, then curing in (1N NaOH) at $80^{\circ}C$ for 14 days, length expansion of mortar bars were measured and compared. It was noted that, the lowest length expansion of a specimens shows the best proportion of admixture based on alkali-silica reactivity. Then, prediction of alkali-silica reaction of concrete has been investigated by using artificial neural network. In this study the backpropagation network has been used and compared with different algorithms to train network. Finally, the best amount of nano silica for adding to mix proportion, also the best algorithm and number of neurons in hidden layer of artificial neural network have been offered.

Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical reaction between alkalies in cement and chemically unstable aggregates and causes expansion and cracking of concrete. In the Present study, we studied the effects of metakaolin, which is a newly introduced mineral admixture showing excellent pozzolainc reaction property, on the inhibition of ASR. We prepared mortar-bars of various replacement ratios of metakaolin and conducted alkali-silica reactivity test (ASTM C 1260), compressive strength test and flow test. We also carefully analyzed the mineralogical changes in hydrate cement paste by XRD qualitative analysis. The admixing of metakaolin caused quick pozzolanic reaction and hydration reaction that resulted in a rapid decrease in portlandite content of hydrated cement paste. The expansion by ASR was reduced effectively as metakaolin replaced cement greater than 15%. This resulted in that the amounts of available portlandite decreased to less than 10% in cement paste. It is considered that the inhibition of ASR expansion by admixing of metakaolin was resulted by the combined processes that the formation of deleterious alkali-calcium-silicate gel was inhibited and the penetration of alkali solution into concrete was retarded due to the formation of denser, more homogeneous cement paste caused by pozzolanic effect. Higher early strength (7 days) than normal concrete was developed when the replacement ratios of metakaolin were greater than 15%. And also, late strength (28 days) was far higher than normal concrete for the all the replacement ratios of metakaolin. The development patterns of mechanical strength for metakaolin admixed concretes reflect the rapid pozzolanic reaction and hydration properties of metakaolin.
The concrete pavement at Seohae Expressway in Korea has suffered from serious distress, only after four to seven years of construction. The deterioration of ASR has seldom been reported per se in Korea, because the aggregate used for the cement concrete has been considered safe against alkali-silica reaction so far. The purpose of this study is to examine the expansion behavior of aggregates of Korea due to alkali-silica reaction by ASTM C 1260 standard method of the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT), stereo microscopic analysis, scanning electronic microscope (SEM) analysis, and electron dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) analysis. The results are presented as it follows. The accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) showed that mica granite and felsite of igneous rocks, aroke, red sandstone and shale of sedimentary rocks, slate of metamorphic rock, and dendrite and quartz of mineral rock showed more expansion than 0.1% at 14 days. But, some sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks expanded more than 0.1% at 28 days even though they were less than 0.1% at 14 days. The mortar bars, which showed more than occurred 0.1% expansion, resulted in cracking on surface. SEM and EDX analysis confirmed that the white gel was a typical reaction product of ASR. The ASR gel in Korea mainly consisted of Silicate (Si) and Potassium (K) from the cement. The crack in the concrete pavement was caused by ASR. It seems that Korea is no longer safe zone against alkali-silica reaction.
Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in concrete can induce degradation in its mechanical properties, leading to compromised serviceability and even loss in load capacity of concrete structures. Compared to other properties, ASR often affects the modulus of elasticity more significantly. Several empirical models have thus been established to estimate elastic modulus reduction based on the ASR expansion only for condition assessment and capacity evaluation of the distressed structures. However, it has been observed from experimental studies in the literature that for any given level of ASR expansion, there are significant variations on the measured modulus of elasticity. In fact, many other factors, such as cement content, reactive aggregate type, exposure condition, additional alkali and concrete strength, have been commonly known in contribution to changes of concrete elastic modulus due to ASR. In this study, an artificial intelligent model using artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed for the first time to provide an innovative approach for evaluation of the elastic modulus of ASR-affected concrete, which is able to take into account contribution of several influence factors. By intelligently fusing multiple information, the proposed ANN model can provide an accurate estimation of the modulus of elasticity, which shows a significant improvement from empirical based models used in current practice. The results also indicate that expansion due to ASR is not the only factor contributing to the stiffness change, and various factors have to be included during the evaluation.
Waste glass has been increased with the development of industry. The utilization of waste glass for concrete can cause the concrete to be cracked and to be weakened due to an expansion by alkali-silica reaction(ASR). In this study, ASR expansion and properties of strength were analyzed in terms of waste glass color(amber, emerald-green), industrial by-products(ground granulated blast-furnace slag, fly ash), and the content of industrial by-products for reducing ASR expansion caused by the waste glass. The possibility of using glass ground as pozzolanic properties was also analyzed. From the result of this study, the pessimum size of waste glass was 2.5∼1.2 mm regardless of waste glass color. And the smaller than 2.5∼1.2 mm waste glass is, the more decreasing expansion of ASR is. Also, the combination of waste glass with industrial by-products have an effect on reducing the expansion and strength loss caused by ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass, and the glass ground of less than 0.075 mm is applicable as a pozzolanic material.

In this study, high strength mortar and normal strength mortar using waste glass sand were evaluated. The main parameters studied were mechanical properties, alkali-silica reaction(ASR) and residual mechanical properties after ASR. As a result of this experiment, it was found that the increase in strength of the mortar has a limitation in improving the slip of the waste glass sand(GS), and rather, it causes a larger ASR. However, the possibility of improving the slip of GS was confirmed by the temporary increase of initial residal compressive and flexural strength of the mortar containing GS after the ASR. Therefore, to improve the slip of GS, the additional research is required, such as modification of the surface of GS and the incorporation of a binder which can increase the strength and makes matrix compact.
Recently, there have been several cases of serious accidents on concrete structure resulting from rapid deterioration of concrete strength. On the view point of long term stability of concrete, deterioration of concrete strength is mostly due to chemical reaction between alkali and reactive aggregates (alkali-aggreagte reaction; AAR) in concrete rather than a problem of execution. For long-term stability of concrete, concrete aggregates must be carefully selected. Some of rocks used for concrete aggregates contain deleterious minerals reactive to alkali components in concrete. Most of AAR result from chemical reaction between alkali components and reactive silica minerals in aggregates (so called alkali-silica reaction; ASR). The silica minerals are as follows; quartz with seriously distorted lattice structure, volcanic glass, chalcedony, opal, cristobalite, tridymite, etc. ASR may cause expansion and cracks, further collapse in concrete structure, in a few years. In case of crushed aggregates, only a part of rock mass without reactive minerals must be produced in aggregates mine after thorough examination of the distribution of rocks with reactive minerals. In case of natural aggregates, the total content of reactive minerals must be calculated, if, the content is more than 20%, the rate should be lower by mixing other non-reactive crushed- or natural aggregates. If it is obliged to use concrete aggregates all containing deleterious minerals in a discrete area, they must be used with low alkali cement Even if it is low quality in the chemical properties, aggregates with suitable range in the physical properties can be utilized as the aggregate of other purposes.

The research significance of the paper is to identify the major properties of synthetic lightweight concrete that are affected by ASR expansion and to determine the extent and magnitude of the loss in these properties. Emphasis is also given to the use of non-destructive testing techniques ; Such as dynamic modulus of elasticity and ultrasonic pulse velocity, to examine whether these methods could be used to identify the initiation of expansion and the internal structural damage caused by ASR.
Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is among one of the most important damaging mechanisms in concrete, depending primarily on aggregates which contain reactive minerals. However, expansion in concrete may not directly relate to the reactive minerals. This study aims to investigate the influence of ASR and the expansion of mortar bars depending on aggregate type containing various components such as quartz, clay minerals (montmorillonite and kaolinite) and micas (muscovite and biotite). In this study, the accelerated mortar bar tests (AMBT) were performed in two conditions (mortar bars in the same and sole NaOH solutions). Petrographic thin section studies, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis (Rietveld method), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical analyses were carried out. This study showed that quartzite bars led to increase in expansion values of mortar bars in diabase-1 and andesite when these were in the same NaOH solution. However, three samples (basalt, quartzite and claystone) were found having ASR expansion based on the AMBT when the special molds were used for each sample. SEM study revealed that samples which exhibit highest expansions according to AMBT had a generally rough surface and acicular microstructures in or around the micro-cracks. Basalt and quartzite showed more variable in major oxides than those of other samples based on the chemical analyses, SEM studies and AMBT. This study revealed that the highest expansions were observed to source not only from reactive aggregates but also from alteration products (silicification, chloritization, sericitization and argillisation), phyllosilicates (muscovite, biotite and vermiculite) and clays (montmorillonite and kaolinite).
The Alkali-Silica Reaction(ASR) may cause a serious failure in the concrete pavements and structures. Several researches in some nations have conducted the continuous studies to prevent failure of the concrete structures by the ASR distress as well as the studies to manifest the mechanism. The researches on the ASR have not been performed affluently in Korea because the distress due to ASR has seldom been reported literarily. In this study, we tried to set up the systematic scheme practically for verifying the cause of distress due to ASR by using the visual inspections in field, the chemical method, petrographic analysis, and Electron Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer(EDX) method of Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) in laboratory. The chemical method, petrographic method using SEM, and X-ray method were used to verify the cause of pattern crack on the surface and internal crack in the plain concrete pavement. It can be concluded that the distress of a specific site in plain concrete pavement was mainly due to ASR. The chemical method, the petrographic method and EDX method using SEM may be the effective tools for verifying the cause of AAR distresses.
