  • The kerfs between arrayed piezoelectric elements in a medical ultrasonic transducer or a piezoelectric composite transducer are generally filled by polymeric materials. The boundary condition of the elements for lateral mode vibration is changed according to the kerf-filling materials, so that the resonance frequency for longitudinal mode of the transducer is also varied. In this study, to investigate the resonance frequency variation for an arrayed transducer experimentally, the piezoelectric vibration elements of $14mm{\times}0.22mm{\times}0.44mm$ were fabricated and those were linearly arrayed. And, the resonance frequencies were measured for three cases of kerf-filling condition, non-filling and two different kinds of epoxy filling. Conclusively, it is confirmed that the resonant frequency variation shows the similar tendency with the theoretical one for the longitudinal mode.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel approach to improve the performance of speech/music classification for the selectable mode vocoder (SMV) of 3GPP2 using the discriminative weight training which is based on the minimum classification error (MCE) algorithm. We first present an effective analysis of the features and the classification method adopted in the conventional SMV. And then proposed the speech/music decision rule is expressed as the geometric mean of optimally weighted features which are selected from the SMV. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated under various conditions and yields better results compared with the conventional scheme of the SMV.

  • This study compared the sound spectrums of pyeonjong remains and pyeonjong replica to investigate tuning ways of bells. pyeonjong remains, exhibited at King Sejong Memorial Museum and pyeonjong replica, played at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performance Arts were analyzed. To get mode frequencies and mode shapes, pyeonjong replicas' sound spectrums were analyzed and modal analyses by TV holography were performed. Also pyeonjong remains' sound spectrum were analyzed. Nominal frequencies on the pyeonjong replica and remains showed differences in a range between 9.8 cent and 203 cent. Two facts were inferred as causes of the differences, the tuning conditions of pyeonjong remains were not good and C4 in western tempered scale was preferred as the sound standard of Kukak, whangjong. Relative ratio of higher mode frequencies to the nominal frequencies were calculated to figure out tonal differences between two pyeonjongs. The differences in relative ratio of higher mode frequencies except (3,0)a and (3,0)b modes were significants as well as beyond the just noticeable difference. These results implied that the tonal differences between two pyeonjongs could exist. More pyeonjong remains are needed to be investigated to confirm this result in addition to the analyses of alloy components and bell structure of pyeonjong remains and replica.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate listener's affective responses to different vocal registers and modes in terms of valence (i.e., negative to positive affect) and arousal (i.e., low to high energy level). The data were collected from four different conditions (i.e., higher and lower registers paired with major and minor modes). A total of 188 female college students participated in the survey online and rated their perceived valence and arousal levels on a visual analogue scale after listening to each excerpt. The two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was administered for data analysis. The results revealed that there were significant differences in the affective responses to the two vocal registers, showing that the arousal was more affected by the register than the valence. Secondly, mode had statistically significant impact on both valence and arousal while weighing more on valence. Further, there was significant interaction effect of vocal register and mode on valence, but not on arousal. Results also displayed that listeners had the most negative valence when listening to the excerpt of minor mode in higher register, while having the lowest arousal when listening to the excerpt of minor mode in lower register. These findings imply that it is important to consider the vocal range as well as the musical mode when selecting music for appreciation.

  • There are several methods for the time delay estimation between signals to two receivers. Among these methods, Generalized Cross Correlation (GCC), which estimates the relative delay from the cross-correlation between the different signals at the two receivers, is a traditionally well-known method. However, when using a narrow band Continuous Wave (CW) signal, the GCC method degrades the estimation performance from relatively higher signal-to-noise ratio than when using a wideband signal. To improve this phenomenon, this paper examines four different pre-processors for GCC using narrow band single frequency signals. Simulation shows that the performance gain of the preprocessed GCC is up to 9 dB for a 100 msec CW signal as well as up to 4 dB for a 1 s CW signal.

  • The temperature dependence of the characteristics in a PZT-5 piezoelectric ceramic vibrator with the transverse mode was investigated in the range of $-100^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$ using a thermal vacuum chamber to utilize the vibrator in aerospace industries. As the results, at room temperature, the resonant and anti-resonant frequencies had the minimum value, whereas, the dielectric constant increased linearly from about 2500 to 7500 in the given temperature range. The mechanical loss decreased linearly from 0.08 to 0.03. Through the regression analysis, the temperature dependence functions of the characteristics were derived to linear and square regression functions. Applying the functions, the input admittance characteristics of the piezoelectric vibrator were calculated, and the results showed good agreement with measured ones. It can be confirmed that this method is useful to estimate the characteristics change of the piezoelectric vibrator caused by the temperature change under the space environment.

  • In this study, the propagation characteristics of Lamb waves in anisotropic silicon wafers of (100) and (111) direction were investigated by PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) line-focused transducer. The modified V(f,z) method was used because the Lamb waves are dispersive. For confirming the anisotropy, a line-focused transducer was used and the silicon wafer was rotated 180 degrees at intervals of 1 degree. As a result, $A_0$ and $S_0$ modes were observed. The speed of $S_0$ mode according to propagation direction showed anisotropy which is associated with the crystal structure, and the speed of $A_0$ mode was isotropic. The result is consistent with the crystal structure of silicon and the mechanism of vibration of each Lamb wave modes.

  • The purpose of the study is to identify a sound generating organ that has a major influence on the central frequency of the cicadas with the Helmholtz resonator structure for the first time. The sound of cicadas Cryptotympana atrata and Hyalessa fuscata were recorded and analyzed, then the motion of the tymbals was analyzed with a high-speed camera to compare the relationship between the frequency of sound and the motion of the tymbals. As a result, there was little difference in the frequency distribution of calling song and scream for two species. The tymbals of C. atrata oscillated in three vibration modes, while those of H. fuscata oscillated in one mode. There was no difference in the frequency of both tymbals of both cicadas, and three vibration modes of C. atrata generated sound with different frequency bands. The frequency band of tymbals and the central frequency band of calling song were very similar. In conclusion, it is presumed that the frequency of the cicadas with the Helmholtz resonator structure was determined by mode frequency of the tymbals than resonance condition of the abdomen.

  • This paper identifies the cause of the high frequency calibration limit of the acoustic chamber type calibrator for microphone calibration and presents a method to improve it. By using a commercial finite element analysis software, we analyzed the calibration frequency limit of the acoustic chamber type calibrator through eigen-frequency and frequency domain analysis. Based on this, we designed and fabricated an acoustic chamber type calibrator that can precisely calibrate within 1 dB from about 2 Hz to 6.4 kHz and verified its performance through experiments. The acoustic chamber type calibrator fabricated through this study has the advantage of being able to calibrate multiple microphones simultaneously in a wide frequency range, so it can be usefully used for simple calibration for multiple microphones.

  • Korean pyeongyeong, a set of sixteen L-shape chime stones covering one and one third octaves, is a standard instrument in the Korean traditional court music. We analyze the vibrational mode frequencies in a pyeongyeong replica which is played at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performance Arts and pyeongyeong remains which are exhibited at King Sejong Memorial Museum. The modal shapes on the Whangjong, the 1st stone and Cheonghyurjong, the 16th stone mapped by scanning accelerometer, TV holography and STAR system. The nominal frequencies in pyeongyeong replica at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performance Arts increase linearly with the thickness of the stones and the tones are tuned in line with the musical scale of Sambunsonik. The sexagenary cycles on the pyeongyeong remains at King Sejong Memorial. which show the Year of product indirectly, are different each other and the tones are not tuned in scale. The relative frequency ratios of each modes on stones differ more than just-noticeable differences from those on the pyeongyeong replica. Modal shapes are same for the two stones regardless of the thickness.
