The Effect of Board Composition and Ownership Structure on Firm Value: Evidence from Jordan

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of the composition of the board and ownership structure on a firm's value in Jordanian firms. Specifically, it aims to determine the effect of board size, (CEO) duality, and family, foreign, institutional, and government ownership on a firm's value. An ordinary least square regression (OLS) was employed to examine the study hypotheses in a sample of 35 Jordanian industrial firms (175 firm-year observation) for a period of five years from 2016-2020. As measured by Tobin's Q (Q ratio) and market-to-book (MB ratio) for Jordanian industrial firms listed on Amman Stock Exchange (ASE). The result found that foreign ownership, institutional ownership, and family ownership have a significant and positive effect on firm value. By contrast, government ownership does not have a significant effect on firm value. With respect to board composition (CEO duality and board size), the study results found no evidence to support the effect of board composition on firm value. The study recommended the concerned authorities with several recommendations, most notably: taking the necessary measures to ensure the continuity and growth of family businesses because of their positive impact on the value of the company and economic growth, spreading awareness about how governance protects the interests of investors.

경기 지역 폐경 전.후 여성들의 골밀도와 신체 계측, 모성요인 및 운동과의 상관성 연구 (A Study on Bone Mineral Density, Anthropometric Measurements, Maternal Factors, and Exercise and Their Correlation in Premenopausal and Postmenopausal Women in Gyeonggi-do Korea)

  • This study was performed to assess the relationships among bone mineral density, anthropometric measurements, maternal factors and exercise in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Anthropometric measurements were taken by a trained practitioner and the maternal factors of the 78 subjects in Gyeonggi-do were acquired by an interview questionnare. The BMD of the lumbar spine(L2~L4), femoral neck, Ward's triangles and trochanters were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The mean age of the premenopausal women was 45.23 years and that of the postmenopausal women whose ase of menopause was 49.37 years was 61.27 years. The age, waist and waist to hip ratio of postmenopausal women were significantly higher than those of premenopausal women. BMD of the lumbar spine(L2~L4) in postmenopausal women was significantly higher than that of premenopausal women. Number of children and age at last delivery were significantly higher in postmenopausal women than those in premenopausal women. The BMDs of the lumbar spine and femoral neck of premenopausal women was positively correlated with weight, body mass index, waist and WHR and the BMDs of these two sites in postmenopausal women were positively correlated with height, and weight. In postmenopausal women, BMD of the lumbar spine was negatively correlated with duration time after menopause and BMD of the femoral neck was positively correlated with age at last delivery. These results suggest that it is necessary to maintain adequate body weight. Health management and education about performing more exercise are recommended for postmenopausal women to prevent osteoporosis.

Preliminary Results of Extraction, Separation and Quantitation of Arsenic Species in Food and Dietary Supplements by HPLC-ICP-MS

  • Various extraction procedures were investigated using reference materials and samples to evaluate extraction efficiency and effectiveness. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure total arsenic and to quantitate arsenic species when coupled to an HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography). Arsenic species were extracted from rice flour (NIST SRM 1568a) with water/methanol mixtures using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE). Total arsenic extraction efficiency ranged from 42 to 64%, for water and various methanol concentrations. From spinach (NIST SRM 1570), freeze-dried apple, and rice flour (NIST SRM 1568a), arsenic species were extracted with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) at 100 ${^{\circ}C}$. Total arsenic extraction efficiency was 90% for spinach, 75% for freeze-dried apple, and 83% for rice flour. Enzymatic extraction with alpha-amylase and sonication resulted in extraction efficiency of 104% for rice flour, 98% for freeze-dried apple, and 7% for spinach. Chromatograms of arsenic species extracted by the optimum extraction methods were obtained, and the species were quantified. Arsenite (As(III)), arsenate (As(V)), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) were found in the apple sample, and DMA and As(V) in the rice flour sample. As(V) and MMA were found in three herbal dietary supplement samples.

  • 본 연구에서는 종횡비(aspect ratio` A=H/L)가 1 이하인 직각밀폐용기내 수평 경계면이 자연대류열전달에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위해 단열조건인 경우와 등온조건 인 경우 { $T_{H}$.simeq. $T_{T}$$T_{C}$.simeq. $T_{B}$, 따라서 온도차의 비, .DELTA. $T_{V/}$ .DELTA. $T_{H}$=( $T_{T}$- $T_{B}$)/( $T_{H}$- $T_{C}$).simeq.1} Mach-Zehnder간섭계 및 수치해석 을 통해 온도장 및 각 면에서의 열전달특성의 차이를 자세히 구명하였다. 특히 등온 수평면조건인 경우 상부수평면온도가 하부수평면온도보다 높을 때 ( $T_{T}$$T_{B}$) 직각용기내는 수직방향으로 안정된 온도구배가 형성되어, 양단온도차(.DELTA. $T_{H}$= $T_{H}$- $T_{C}$)에 의해 기본적으로 존재하는 자연대류흐름을 억제하게 된다. 이때 자연대류흐름의 억제정도를 나타내는 주요 물리적 변수로서 온도차의 비, .DELTA. $T_{V/}$ .DELTA. $T_{H}$가 있다. 이러한 물리적 현상은, 기본적으로 존재하는 유체내 자연대류효 과를 억제함으로써 중력장하에서 양질의 결정을 얻고자 하는 결정성장(growth of cry- stal)등에 관계된다. 본 연구는 실험유체가 공기이고 .DELTA. $T_{V/}$.DELTA. $T_{H}$=1인 경우 를 택하여 일반적인 단열조건의 경우와 열전달특성의 차이를 비교한 것이다.전달특성의 차이를 비교한 것이다.다.전달특성의 차이를 비교한 것이다.

  • 상황인식은 비행 또는 항공기를 유지하는 작업에서 진행 상황을 파악하는데 필요한 모든 사항을 인식하는 것을 의미한다. 상황인식은 환경에 대한 정보를 단순히 인지하는 것 이상을 기본으로 하며 정보의 의미를 통합된 형태로 제공하는 것이 중요하다. 한국형 기동헬기는 통합된 형태의 상황인식을 위하여 통합 상황시현 및 우선순위 기반 청각 신호경고를 시각 신호와 동조하여 조종사에게 제공한다. 통합 상황시현 및 효율적인 경고 제공으로 운용자 과실을 줄이고 운용자에게 임무의 핵심작업 및 이벤트에 집중할 수 있게 한다. 본 논문은 한국형 기동헬기에서 구현한 통합 상황시현 및 경고 설계를 소개한다.

열처리 잣나무 정각재의 재색 변화 및 물성 조사 (Investigation of the Color Change and Physical Properties of Heat-treated Pinus koraiensis Square Lumbers)

  • 국내의 주 생산 수종인 잣나무 $90{\times}90mm$ 각재의 적정한 열처리 조건을 찾기 위해 3가지 열처리 스케줄을 적용하여 재색과 물성에 미치는 영향을 연구하였다. 1차 열처리시 온도는 $170^{\circ}C$$190^{\circ}C$, 시간은 예비가열시간 1시간을 포함하여 9시간과 13시간을 적용하였다. 2차와 3차 열처리는 모든 공시 각재에 동일하게 $190^{\circ}C$-9시간을 적용하였다. 열처리 횟수가 증가할수록 백색도 $L^*$는 직선적으로 감소하였으며 표준편차도 감소하였다. 열처리 횟수가 증가할수록 색차 ${\Delta}E^*$는 직선적으로 증가하였으며, 표준편차가 커지는 경향이 있었다. 알려진 바와 달리 열처리 시편의 평균 종압축강도가 무처리 시편보다 9% 높았다. 항팽윤율과 중량증가율을 측정하여 열처리 시편의 치수안정성이 무처리보다 크게 증가하였음을 보였다.

광섬유 센서를 이용한 복합재의 파손 및 번형률 동시 측정 (Simultaneous Sensing of Failure and Strain in Composites Using Optical Fiber Sensors)

  • 급격한 과도하중이나 충격 등에 의해서 발생만 복합적층 내부의 손상은 항공기 구조물과 같이 안전성이 중요시되는 구조의 신뢰성을 저하시키며 또한 큰 위험 요인이 될 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 구조의 건전성을 모니터링하고 파손여부를 실시간으로 감지하기 위해 단파장 레이저와 광대역광원을 동시에 적용한 광섬유 센서를 이용하여 변형률 및 파손을 실시간으로 동시에 모니터링 할 수 있는 시스템을 구성하였다 이때 서로 다른 파장대의 두 장원은 파장분할다중 송신기를 이용하여 하나의 광섬유 센서에 적용되었다 파손신호의 특징을 정량적으로 구분하기 위해 STFT와 Wavelet Transform 과 같은 시간 주파수 분석법을 사용하였으며, 광섬유 센서로 취득 긴 파손신호 및 변형률 측정값을 각각 압전 세라믹 센서와 스트레인게이지의 값과 서로로 비교하였다. 장시간동안 파손과 동시에 측정된 변형률의 값은 스트레인게이지의 측정값과 잘 일치하였으며 파손감지 시스템 또만 미세한 파손신호까지 민감하게 감지해 낼 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.

식도에 발생한 거대 해면혈관종 수술치험 - 1례 보고 - (Giant Cavernous Hemangioma of the Esophagus -One Case Report-)

  • 식도에 발생하는 혈관종은 식도에 드물게 발생하는 양성종양의 2% 내지 3% 정도 차지할 정도로 매우 희귀하여 세계적으로 보고된 증례수가 많지 않다. 저자들은 식도에 발생한 매우 희귀한 해면혈관종 1례를 수술치험하였기에 문헌고찰과 더불어 보고하고자 한다. 환자는 40세 남 米\ulcorner경미한 연하장애를 주소로 내원하여 식도조영술, 식도 내시경검사, 조영제를 이용한 흉부 전산화 단층촬영등을 시행하여 하부 식도의 점막하층에서 발생하여 근육층 밖으로 돌출되어 나온 식도 종양이 추정되어 수술을 시행하였다. 수술소견상 하부 식도 및 식도-위 문합부에 걸쳐 과혈관성의 7x7x3.5cm 크기의 거대한 종괴가 식도점막하층과 식도근육층 그리고 주위조직으로의 침범이 심하게 되어 있어 종양을 포함한 식도절제술 및 식도-위 문합술을 시행하여 병리 조직학적으로 해면 혈관종으로 확진되었으며 환자는 특별한 문제없이 술후 제14일째 건강한 상태로 퇴원하였다.

Cognitive Ability in Midlife and Labor Market Participation Among Older Workers: Prospective Cohort Study With Register Follow-up

  • Background: The study aimed to determine the association of individual cognitive ability in late midlife with labor market participation among older workers. Methods: This prospective cohort study estimates the risk of long-term sickness absence, disability pension, early retirement, and unemployment from scores on the Intelligenz-Struktur-Test 2000R by combining data from 5076 workers from the Copenhagen Aging and Midlife Biobank with a register on social transfer payments. Analyses were stepwise adjusted for age, gender, physical and psychosocial work environment, health behaviors, occupational social class, education, and chronic diseases. Results: In the fully adjusted model, low cognitive ability (≥1 standard deviation below the mean for each gender) and high cognitive ability (≥1 standard deviation above the mean for each gender) were not associated with risk of any of the four labor market outcomes. Conclusion: Individual cognitive ability in late midlife was not associated with risk of long-term sickness absence, disability pension, early retirement, and unemployment in the fully adjusted model. Thus, no direct effect of individual cognitive ability in late midlife was observed on the risk of permanently or temporarily leaving the labor market.

Dimensional Stability, Color Change, and Durability of Boron-MMA Treated Red Jabon (Antochephalus macrophyllus) Wood

  • Boron compound had many advantages as wood preservative, but it was prone to leaching. Improving boron preservation was required to extend the service life of fast growing and low durability red jabon (Antochephalus macrophyllus) hardwood. This study aimed to evaluate the dimensional stability, color change and durability of modified red jabon wood by double impregnation with boron and methyl methacrylate (MMA) and heat treatment. Impregnation I used boric acid or borax, and impregnation II used MMA, while heat treatment used temperatures of 90 ℃ or 180 ℃ for 4 hours. The dimensional stability, leachability, water absorption, color change and decay resistance of modified red jabon wood were tested. The results showed that MMA impregnation increased the dimensional stability of red jabon wood, while the leaching and water absorption in the wood significantly reduced. Heating at 180 ℃ caused less water absorption and higher dimensional stability of the wood than that of heating at 90 ℃. Impregnation with boric acid and MMA followed by heating at 90 ℃ resulted in the highest wood ASE, 89.9%. The color change (∆E*) of wood increased significantly after MMA impregnation and heating at 180 ℃. Boric acid impregnation caused more resistant wood than borax impregnation against decay fungi and termites. Impregnation with boric acid and MMA followed with heating at 180 ℃ increased significantly the wood resistance against decay fungi and termites.
