  • Soft-decision detectors are used in many FEC and ARQ schemes to enhance the bit-error-probability and system throughput. Also, the hybrid-ARQ protocol is a very efficient schemeto achieve overall performance improvement. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid-ARQ protocol based on the first-order Reed-Muller codes employing soft-decision detectors. The Reed-Muller codes have the virtue of being able to use the fast Green machine decoder that is simple to implement. As the performance measures, the bit-error-probability and system throughput are evaluted for the proposed hybrid-ARQ procol, and compared with those of other hybrid-ARQ schemes. It is shown that the use of the proposed hybrid-ARQ protocol results in significant performance improvement without causing much loss in view of system complexity.

  • This paper analyzes the throughput performance of a selective repeat (SR)/automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme to transmit packet data in burst home network channel. To combat the high degree of error caused by transmission of home network data a robust error control scheme is a necessity. Basically, error control schemes can be divided in two categories: ARQ schemes and forward error correction (FEC) schemes. ARQ schemes are often used for reliable data transmission. The performance of packet transmission using SR-ARQ schemes for bursty channels is analyzed and simple analytical expressions of its throughput are presented. Theoretic analysis and numerical results indicate that a small number of packet sizes can get good performance in bursty home network channel.

  • In this paper, the performance is confirmed by applying ARQ technology to the shadowing channel occurring in the mobile satellite terminal. Shadowing is a signal disruption caused by movement of a satellite terminal. An ARQ technique may be used to retransmit the signal to compensate for signal interruption. In satellite communication, shadowing occurs in the transmission channel and the ack channel. The expected throughput after applying ARQ technique is different according to the correlation of shadowing occurring in two channels. Therefore, we confirm the expected performance when ARQ is applied in the shadowing channel. As a result, it is shown that the amount of transmission is different when the terminal transmits and receives, and the performance can be predicted formally.

  • To detect and recover packet losses over wireless links is very important in terms of reliability in packet transmission. Most wireless communication systems adopt an automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol operating at link layer. However, it has been constantly addressed that the interaction not harmonized sufficiently between ARQ and TCP rather degrades TCP performance. In this paper, therefore, we propose an improved scheme from the aspect of the interaction with TCP loss recovery mechanism that can be applied to selective repeat ARQ (SR-ARQ) protocol and prove that the proposed scheme improves TCP performance significantly by OPNET simulations.

  • In this paper, the hybrid ARQ scheme, which is incorporated the selective-repeat ARQ system with the finite receiver buffer and the single-error-correcting and double-error-detecting(63.56) cyclic Hamming code system, has been investigated. As a result of simulation, the proposed hybrid ARQ scheme shows that that throughput efficiencies are improved by one error correction, and that the reversed codewords due to retransmission are delivered to the user in order by means of detecting two errors. The hybrid ARQ scheme significantly outperforms the FEC or the ideal selective-repeat ARQ system in the respect of throughput and reliability, especially when the channel error rate is approximately in the range from $10^{-2}$~$10^{-3}$.

  • In this paper, we present hybrid ARQ techniques to improve the throughput performance in high speed packet transmission such as Internet or multimedia services. In order to evaluate the performance of the three different types of hybrid ARQ schemes, systemized link level simulations based on WWW traffic model are considered. In this paper, we also consider the simulated performance for an average link throughput and a normalized packet delay to compare the hybrid ARQ with link adaptation scheme in GPRS.

  • This paper provides optimum TCP/IP packet size that maximizes the throughput efficiency of ATM layer as a function of TCP/IP packet length for several values of channel BER over wireless ATM LAN links applying data link error control schemes to reduce error problems encountered in using wireless links. For TCP/IP delay-insensitive traffc requiring reliable delivery, it is necessary to adopt data link layer ARQ protocol. So ARQ error control schemes considered in this paper include GBN ARQ, SR ARQ and type-I Hybrid ARQ, which ARQ is needed, but FEC can be used to reduce the number of retransmissions. Especially adaptive type-I Hybrid ARQ scheme is necessary for a variable channel condition to make the physical layer as SONET-like as possible.

  • The reverse acknowledgment (RA) scheme supports a fast loss recovery for negative acknowledgment (NAK)-based selective repeat automatic repeat request (SR-ARQ) by detecting a retransmission failure quickly before a retransmission timer expires. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a NAK-based SR-ARQ protocol with the RA scheme and compare it with the conventional NAK-based SR-ARQ protocol. Particularly, we propose a simple analysis model for the transport delay of the NAK-based SR-ARQ protocol considering the traffic condition, the retransmission persistence, the timer-based retransmissions and the RA scheme's behavior. Both NAK-based SR-ARQ protocols with and without the RA scheme are implemented by using the OPNET simulator. We verified the analysis model's accuracy through the simulation results. Also, we evaluate the performance of the NAK-based SR-ARQ protocol with the RA scheme based on analysis and simulation results.

  • In ARQ based error control, imperfect error detection leaves error remains on a packet. Aiming for a reduction of error remains in multicopy transmission ARQ system, we propose a rule of requesting a retransmission and deciding a correct copy, (identified as $(m, \;{\sigma})$rule). While the probability of error remains is reduced by the employment of the $(m, \;{\sigma})$ rule at multicopy transmission ARQ, delay and throughput performance may be degraded in comparison with those of conventional single copy transmission ARQ. Thus, we develop an analytical method to evaluate the performance trade-off in multicopy transmission ARQ following the $(m, \;{\sigma})$ rule. From the numerical results obtained by the analytical method, we investigate the effect of channel characteristics on the performance of error remains, packet loss, throughput, and packet delay, and confirm that the adaptability of the $(m, \;{\sigma})$ rule to conform to various QoS requirements with ease.
