Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the effect of aquatic exercise on balance and depression of stroke patients. Methods: For 12 participants with stroke, six members of the experimental group and six members of the control group were randomly selected and arranged. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) lower extremity aquatic pattern exercise was applied to the experimental group. On the other hand, participants in the control group performed PNF lower extremity pattern exercise on the ground. Both exercises were performed 30 minutes per day, five times per week, for a period of six weeks. Balance was assessed using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Timed Up to Go test (TUG). Depression was measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies depression scale (CES-D). Results: As a result of comparison within groups, the experimental group showed significant difference for balance and depression after the experiment (p<0.05). In comparison between the two groups, the experimental group in which aquatic exercise was applied showed more significant change in balance and depression than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, aquatic exercise was proven to enhance the balance and decrease the depression of stroke patients.

Purpose : This meta-analysis was aimed at guiding future research in stroke treatment and to provide real-world data relating to the effects of aquatic exercise therapy on balance in patients with chronic stroke. Methods : We performed a meta-analysis comprising 22 studies involving aquatic exercise therapy performed between 2006 and 2017. A meta-analysis software program was used to calculate the mean effect size, effect size by intervention, and effect size by outcome. We also performed a meta-regression analysis and an analysis of publishing bias. Results : The mean effect size was 0.563. The effect size by outcome was observed to be the largest for the functional reach test, followed by the Berg balance scale, balance equipment, the Timed Up and Go test and one leg standing. Meta-regression analysis showed that effect size increased with an increase in the duration, number, length of exercise session. Conclusion : Aquatic exercise therapy appears to show a moderate effect on balance in patients with chronic stroke. A meta-analysis is warranted for further research to determine the effects of aquatic exercise on walking, muscle strength, and range of motion.
The purposes of this study were to examine whether aquatic exercise has influence on the neuroplasticity and vestibulo-motor function in diffuse brain injury rats. 80 Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to four groups; Group I: control group (n=20), Group II: aquatic exercise (n=20), Group III: treadmill exercise with change of velocity and inclination (n=20), Group IV: simple treadmill exercise (n=20). And we applied exercise each groups for 3 weeks except Group I. Before the rats were sacrificed to identify immunohistochemistry study at each time of measurement day, Rota-Rod test was given to assess changes in vestibulomotor function. then, the immunohistochemistry study of GAP-43 in discrete regions of the rat brain was performed to measure changes in neuroplasticity. The results demonstrate that aquatic exercise group is more effective than other groups. expression of GAP-43 and vestibulo-motor function were increased most in aquatic exercise group. Therefore, this study suggest that aquatic exercise may effective therapeutic approach to increase neuroplasticity and vestibulo-motor function in traumatic brain injury.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of pain release through the four weeks aquatic exercise among the female subjects aged above 50 and who suffered from arthritis. Methods : The assessment was validated by blood analysis which measured the fluctuations of Erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR), C-reactive protein(CRP) and Rheumatoid factor(RF). Among the 50 subjects of this experiment, the control group has only taken a regular treatment from the clinic and the other experimental group has done aquatic exercise. The experimental group has practiced the aquatic exercise 50 minutes a day for one month excluding the weekends. Results : Blood analysis revealed that ESR was decreased in both the control group and the experimental group and the major effect of CRP was diminished only in the experimental group. No significance of RF was found in both the control group and the experimental group. Conclusion : These results indicate that the aquatic exercise is an effective treatment for arthritis that is compatible with the similar results from the previous studies. In line with this, the aquatic exercise program can provide an effective treatment and control of the disease with the arthritis patient. Accordingly, the regular basis aquatic exercise proved to be quite satisfactory treatment in this regard and we contend that it is vital for the arthritis patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of aquatic exercise program on physical fitness, pain and physiological function in patients with osteoarthritis. Method: The subjects of the study were thirty women(age: forty-seventy five) who have an osteoarthritis. Aquatic exercise program consist of approximately two hours of exercise in water, two days per week, for six weeks. Data were gathered from April 19 2005 to May 27 using a questionnaire and measuring physical fitness and physiological index. Data were analyzed with the SPSS Win 12.0 using frequency and paired t-test for difference between pre-exercise and post-exercise. Results: The results of this study were as follows: There were significantly increased on left shoulder (t=3.848, p=.001) and waist flexibility(t=-5.622, p=.001) scores. There were significantly decreased on pain score(t=5.288. p=.000), body weight(t=5.072, p=.001), systolic B.P(t=18.362, p=.001), diastolic B.P(t=32.558, p=.001), blood sugar(t=1.805, p=.041), total cholesterol(t=2.032, p=.026) scores. Conclusion: From these results, it is concluded that the aquatic exercise program can be effective in increasing physical fitness, physiological function and decreasing pain in patients with osteoarthritis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aquatic health exercise program for the old. Methods: 20 healthy female with an average age of 71years($71{\pm}4.2$), were participated in this study. The aquatic health exercise program that include warm-up, stretching, strengthening exercise, WATSU and cool-down was performed in the pool two times a week for eight weeks(40min per one session). Body composition, strength of the both knee flexors and extensors, balance ability(sway area and path), whole body reaction time and flexibility(forward reaching test in long sitting) were measured before and after exercise. The data was analyzed with paired t-test to determine significant differences of all suggested factors between pre and post-exercise by make use of the SPSS(ver 10.0) package program. Results: The strength of the both knee flexors and extensors were increased significantly(right knee; p<0.01, left knee; p<0.05). Anteroposterior sway area (p<0.01), and sway path (p<0.001) of both leg were reduced significantly with eyes closed and opened. Whole body reaction time by optical stimulation was increased significantly (p<0.01) but whole body reaction time by auditory stimulation was no significant difference. The flexibility was increased significantly (p<0.01). Conclusion: Aquatic health exercise program can improve muscle strength, balance, whole body reaction, and flexibility.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of an aquatic exercise program on the physical function and depression among the community elderly. The subjects were 41 cases of aged over 65 who went to elderly college in Hawsung-Kun, Kyeongkee province. Seventeen of them were assigned to control group, while twenty four subjects to the experimental group. The period of data collection was from June., 1999 to November., 1999. The aquatic exercise program was developed by the author with the assistance of rehabilitation medicine doctor and physical therapist in the public health center. The program was carried out once a week for 6 months in regular swimming pool. Data were analyzed with t-test, $X^2$ test, ANCOVA. paired t-test using SAS 6.12. Results were obtained as follows: 1. The increments in the range of motion of the shoulder and knee joints in experimental group after exercise was significantly greater than those in the control group. 2. The physical pain score decreases significantly after the exercise in the experimental group only. 3. The experimental group revealed lower level of depression after exercise than the level before the exercise, whereas control group showed no significant changes in this level. These findings may indicate that the aquatic exercise program is effective in increasing the range of motion of shoulder and knee joints and also effective in decreasing pain, the level of depression. Accordingly. the aquatic exercise program can be adopted as an health promotion program for community elderly.
Purpose: This study was to compare the effects among Tai-Chi exercise, aquatic Exercise, and a self-help program for knee osteoarthritis patients on symptoms of arthritis, muscle strength, balance, and difficulty of performing activities. Method: There were 50 final subjects50. A non-equivalent pretest-posttest design was used. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS for Window. One-way ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple comparison test were used 8weeks after each program. Result: There were significant differences in joint pain(p=.000), stillness (p=.001), knee extensor peak torque(p=.006), knee flexor(p=.002), and difficult of performing activity (p=.000), but there was no significant difference in balance(p=.648). The Tai-Chi group was significantly different from the self-help group for knee extensor peak torque, knee flexor and stiffness on Scheffe's multiple comparison tests. In addition, the Tai Chi group or aquatic group were significantly different from the self-help group for difficulty of performing activities(p<0.05). Conclusion: There are significant differences in the effects of the nursing intervention among the three groups. The Tai Chi group and aquatic group were significantly different from the self-help group. However, it seems that Tai-chi exercise may be more suitable than aquatic exercise in osteoarthritis exercise programs. Further studies with a longitudinal study are necessary to confirm the longer exercise period.
