  • We simulated large deformation and inelastic behavior of API-X80 steel linepipes using nonlinear finite element method. Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman(GTN) model is employed for the development of the constitutive model of the steel. The GTN model is implemented in the form of the user-supplied material subroutine(UMAT) for the commercial software of ABAQUS. To calibrate the model parameters, we simulated the behavior of the uniaxial tension test using ABAQUS equipped with the developed GTN model. Using the set of the model parameters, we were able to capture the characteristics of the plastic buckling of API-X80 steel linepipes.

  • This paper presents the results of a study that aimed to develop a module for auto connection modeling that can be applied to the structural details design and modeling phase. It was established that the steel connection library database from the structural analysis resulted from the consideration of the input parameters of the 3D modeling program and the guidelines for Korean standard steel connections. The module for the auto connection modeling in steel structures was developed by linking it with the established library database through the use of the OpenAPI software to prove that the developed module carried out the modeling of the six story (steel structure) office building. The productivity and efficiency of the module introduction was verified by comparing the conventional process and the proposed process.

  • This paper is concerned with the fatigue strength assessment of tendon porch found which is categorized as the special structural member in TLP. Large-scale tendon porch specimens have been designed and fabricated with API 2W Gr.50 steel recently produced by POSCO. Fatigue test has been carried out for three tendon porch specimens under various load level. Fatigue strength has been evaluated based on the nominal stress range and the results are compared with the fatigue design curve of DnV RP-C203. From the present experimental study, it has been found that the porch specimens satisfy the fatigue design rule although test was carried out under the positive stress ratio. It can be, therefore, said that the API 2W steel produced by POSCO possess sufficient fatigue strength.

  • This paper presents a micro-mechanical model of ductile fracture for the API X65 steel using the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model. Experimental tests and FE damage simulations using the GTN model are performed for smooth and notched tensile bars, from which the parameters in the GTN model are calibrated. As application, the developed GTN model is applied to simulate small-sized, single-edge-cracked tensile and bend bars, via three-dimensional FE damage analyses. Comparison of FE damage analysis results with experimental test data shows overall good agreements.

  • Large-scale model tests of welded tubular K-joints were carried out to observe the fatigue behavior of API 2W Gr.60 steel produced by POSCO. The fatigue crack behaviors for various loading conditions were measured and investigated around the critical joint sections. The experimental results have been verified with numerical approaches and also compared with the IIW, DnV RP-C203 and API RP 2A-WSD design curves. The hot spot stress method was applied in the study. The SCF factor for tubular K-joint was also obtained.

  • Large-scale tests of welded tubular K-joint sunder balanced in-plane bending braces were carried out to observe the fatigue behavior of the API 2W Gr.60 steel plate produced by POSCO. Toe grinding and weld profiling were used to improve the fatigue life of a tubular K-joint. The effects of the steel grade and chord wall thickness on the fatigue life were also investigated. The present results were compared with the UK DEn design curve.

  • SBD (Strain-based design) of pipe lines have gained world-wide attention in recent years. The present research aims to evaluate the fracture characteristics of API (America Petroleum Institute) SBD X100 girth weldment that typically applied for cold climate and deep water offshore, with the focus on the influence of heat input changing with 6kJ/cm and 10kJ/cm from GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding). At a low heat input at 6kJ/cm, the weld metal had Multi-phase matrix (Acicular ferrite + Banite + Martensite) that could fill up both fracture toughness and strength as reported previously. Also, the weld metal exhibited 859MPa YS (Yield strength), 108J impact toughness at $-40^{\circ}C$ and 0.52mm CTOD (Crack Tip Open Displacement) at $-10^{\circ}C$. These results can be satisfied with the requirement of API SBD X100 girth weldment and Alaska pipe line project.

  • During the pipe forming process, a steel plate undergoes inelastic behavior multiple times under a load condition repeating tension and compression in the circumferential direction. It derives local reduction or increase of yield strength within the thickness of steel pipes by the plastic hardening and Bauschinger effect. In this study, a combined hardening model is proposed to effectively predict variations of yield strength in the circumferential direction of API-X65 and X70 steel pipes with relatively low t/D ratio during the forming process, which is expected to experience accumulated plastic strain of 2~3%, the typical Lüder band range in a low-carbon steel. Cyclic tensile tests of API-X65 and X70 steels were performed, and the parameters of the proposed model for the steels were calibrated using the test results. Bending-flattening tests to simulate repeated tension and compression during pipe forming were followed for API-X65 and X70 steels, and the results were compared with those by the proposed model and Zou et al. (2016), in order to verify the process of material model calibration based on tension-compression cyclic test, and the accuracy of the proposed model. Finally, parametric analysis for the yield strength of the steel plate in the circumferential direction of UOE pipe was conducted to investigate the effects of t/D and expansion ratios after O-forming on the yield strength. The results confirmed that the model by Zou et al. (2016) underestimated the yield strength of steel pipe with relatively low t/D ratio, and the parametric analysis showed that the t/D and expansion ratio have a significant impact on the strength of steel pipe.
