Tropospheric ozone data in Korea for 1998-2002 were analyzed to assess the impact on vegetation. SUM06(sum of hourly concentrations at or above 0.06 ppm) and AOT40(accumulated exposure over a threshold of 40 ppb), widely used as ozone indices in the U.S. and Europe, were calculated based on hourly ozone concentration in 612 areas during 1998-2002 in Korea. SUM06 of the highest 30 areas were 5-12 ppm/hr which were almost the same levels of the U.S. average, and a crop loss of 5% would be expected. Ozone pollution in Seoul during 1998-2002 had decreased compared to that for 1990-97 except in the Northern area; however, ozone pollution in Kyunggi during 1998-2002 had been increased twice compare to the previous 5 years. Korea was divided into four regions: Seoul Metropolitan area, Jungbu, Honam, and Youngnam. Ozone pollution in the Seoul Metropolitan area was much higher during 1998-2000 than the other areas, but ozone pollution during 2001-2002 was almost the same in all four regions. Chunnam-Kwangyang na Kyungbuk-Gumi, famous industrial complexes in southern Korea, were significant ozone pollution areas. However, other industrial complexes, such as Incheon, Ulsan, and Kyunggi-Sihwa, were not polluted compared to their neighbors. Comparing all ozone indices, SUM06(yr), SUM06(3mon), AOT40(yr), AOT40(3mon), number of hours exceeding 100 ppb, 95 percentile, 99 percentile, and maximum concentration, it was determined reasonable to use SUM06(3mon), AOT40(3mon) and number of hours exceeding 100 ppb for evaluation of the chronic impact of ozone on vegetation.
In this research work the potentialities of microemulsion bulk liquid membrane for the selective transport of L-tryptophan (L-Trp) and L-tyrosine (L-Tyr) are investigated at 298.15 K. Reversed micelle formed by sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) in dichloroethane, was used as mobile carrier to transport amino acids between a source and a receiving aqueous phase. The effects of pH, surfactant concentration and initial amino acid concentration on the extraction efficiency and transfer rate of the amino acids were studied. It is verified that for a mixture of two amino acids, L-Trp can be extracted selectively by using this type of the bulk liquid membrane with optimized condition.
Acer palmatum was selected and its responses to elevated ozone were subsequently measured during growing periods. Ozone concentration of this study was compared to the calculated AOT40 value. A. palmatum had significantly many but small stomata size to the ozone stress. The length of stomata of A. palmatum was reduced from 5.6 to $5.0{\mu}m$ to the ozone exposure. However, the number of stomata (density) was increased from 102 to 131 in the $500{\times}500{\mu}m$ leaf area.
Solubilization of bovine serum albumin(BSA) is performed using a reverse micellar system consisting of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate(AOT). Of particular, effects of pH, salt concentration and its type on the solubilization are investigated by means of the phase-transfer method. One of significant findings in our study is that the protein is to a large extent aggregated in the interface between organic and aqueous phases at lower pH and small salt concentration. In this presentation, the optimal extraction process conditions for BSA, which is bulky, are proposed.
Mass transfer rates have been measured for the extraction of enzyme from aqueous solution into a reverse-micelle phase at $25^{\circ}C$. The 420 mL vessel was carefully designed to maintain a planar interface between the aqueous and solvent phases, so allowing precise measurement of interfacial area, has been investigated. Sodium di-2-ethylhexyl sulfosuccinate(AOT) was the surfactant used. Factors varied included: agitator speed, pH, ionic strength and surfactant concentration. Samples were taken from the solvent phase at 15min intervals, and the amount of enzyme extracted was measured by UV absorption at 280 nm. The observed Sherwood numbers for the aqueous phase $Sh_1$were correlated interms of the aqueous phase Reynolds number $Re_1$, and modified Schmidt number $Sc_1$. $Sh_1=0.664Re_1^{0.5}Sc_1^{0.33}$
Enhancement of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and surface aerosol mass concentration in Korea for an active forest fire episode in Northeast Asia were estimated by Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. MODIS/TERRA remote detects of fires in Northeast Asia for May 2003 gave a constraint for estimation of wildfire emissions with an NDVI distribution for recent five years. The simulated wildfire plumes and enhancement of AOT were evaluated and well resolved by comparing multiple satellite observations such as MODIS, TOMS, and others. Scatter plots of observed daily mean aerosol extinction coefficient versus $PM_{10}$ concentration in ground level in Korea showed distinctively different trends based on the ambient relative humidity.
The influence of atmospheric aerosol on satellite ocean color data were evaluated using SeaWiFS monthly standard mapped image products. The atmospheric optical thickness (AOT) was increased in spring and summer, and it showed the strong positive correlation with remote sensing reflectance, normalized waterleaving radiance /solar irradiance, at 555 nm (Rrs555) which is a component of the satellite chlorophyll estimation. Such the high AOT and high Rrs555 pixels showed overestimation of satellite chlorophyll in spring, especially in the area which showed large phytoplankton absorption which 1s expressed by low remote sensing reflectance at 443, 490 and 510 nm (Rrs 443, Rrs490 and Rrs510).
Nanosized titania sol has been produced by the controlled hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide(TTIP) in sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate(AOT) reverse micelles. The physical properties, such as crystallite size and crystallinity according to R ratio have been investigated by FT-IR, XRD and UV-DRS. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation of bromate has been studied by using batch reactor in the presence of UV light in order to compare the photocatalytic activity of prepared nanosized titania. It is shown that the anatase structure appears in the 300~$600^{\circ}C$ calcination temperature range and the formation of anatase into rutile starts above $700^{\circ}C$. The crystallite size increases with increasing R ratio. In the photocatalytic degradation of bromate, the photocatalytic decomposition of bromate shows the decomposition rate increases with decreasing initial concentration of bromate and with increasing intensity of light.
Antioxidative ability of anthocyanins in water-in-oil microemulsion was examined. Microemulsion was prepared by solubilizing crude anthocyanins extracted from grape skin (Cambell early) in organic solvent (hexane) containing anionic surfactant [bis (2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate, AOT] and linolenic acid (10%, w/v). Lipid oxidation significantly decreased with increasing concentration of anthocyanins ($5-20\;{\mu}M$) at micellar phase, and increasing micelle size ($Wo=5-20\;{\mu}M$). At given micelle size (Wo=10), lipid oxidation decreased as number of micelles decreased. These results indicate antioxidative ability of anthocyanins is critically affected by water core and micelle structure formed by surfactant. Interactions between AOT and anthocyanins decreased antioxidative ability of anthocyanins. Antioxidative ability of anthocyanins significantly increased when ${\alpha}$-tocopherol was added into organic phase. This indicates of synergism between the two antioxidants.

The protein back-extraction processes were discussed from the viewpoint of the micelle-micelle interaction. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) suppressing the cluster formation of reverse micelle (positive value of ${\beta}pr)$ has the high back-extra cted fraction (Eb), but cytochrome c enhancing the formation of reverse micelle (negative value of ${\beta}pr)$ has the low back-extracted fraction, relatively. We have also examined quantitatively the effects of alcohol addition and protein solubilization on the percolation process of reverse micelle. The alcohols suppressing the formation of micellar cluster (high values of ${\beta}t)$, remarkably improved the back-extraction rates of BSA and cytochrome c. The values of ${\beta}t$, defined by the variation of percolation process, and the back-extraction behavior of proteins have a good linear correlation. These results indicate that the micelle-micelle interaction or micellar clustering plays an important role in the back-extraction process of proteins.
