Personal dosimetry system is required to measure the personal dose equivalent accurately in a wide range of radiation fields, but the dose evaluation algorithms have been developed with the X-ray fields described in MOST Ordinance (equivalent to the ANSI N13.11) from which the actual fields to be monitored may be significantly different. To evaluate the dose more accurately when workers are exposed to the non-ANSI N13.11 radiation fields, two algorithms for monochromatic radiations (one algorithm was used for various ratios of TL dosimeter and the other for matrix approximation) were developed with the experimental data of the energy responses of the $CaSO_4:Dy$ TL materials irradiated by monochromatic X-ray fields recently established in KAERI, and compared with the another algorithm developed on the basis of the ANSI N13.11 continuous spectrum X-ray fields. Then it follows the discussions for some results of the algorithm testing including mixed fields irradiations and angular response conducted in IAEA/RCA intercomparison as well as ANSI and ISO continuous spectrum X-ray and monochromatic radiation fields. The developed algorithms were successfully performed the test not only in the continuous spectrum X-ray fields given by MOST Ordinance but also in the several non-MOST Ordinance radiation fields which could be encountered in the practical working environments.
We have developed standards based on international criterions for the quality control of dose tested by the measurement institutions of individual exposure doses through improving the reliability of data on the exposure dose of individuals working in radioactive environment and securing the accuracy and reliability of individual dose measurements. Laws related to radiation dose applied to domestic institutions refer to ANSI N13.11.1993, but currently, in U.S. and some other countries the measurement of radiation doses is based on ANSI N13.11.2001 that reduced test categories and tightened the standards. We made efforts to simplify the standards and to reduce the number of dosimeters required in experiment, and avoided preventing or hindering the use of future technologies not approved under the current law such as glass dosimeter and optical stimulation dosimeter. The Quality Management Manual of Radiation Dosimetry Service, Assessment Manual of Radiation Dosimetry Service Accreditation Program, and the Personnel Dosimetry Performance. Criteria for Testing are documents applicable in supervising laboratories.
This paper describes the results of intercomparison measurements of KAERI reference photon and beta radiation fields between the KAERI and the PNNL(Pacific Northwest National Laboratory), recently performed at KAERI radiation calibration and dosimetry laboratory on the basis of the ANSI N13.11 criteria for personal dosimeter performance test. Each laboratory used her own radiation detectors or measurement devices traceable to her national primary standard in measuring the exposure rates for photon fields, the absorbed dose rates for beta radiation fields. The agreements in reference radiation measurements between two laboratories were found to be less than ${\pm}2.0%$ for photon fields, ${\pm}1.0%$ for beta radiation fields. Therefore, it could be concluded that KAERI reference radiation fields comply well with the international standard and thus can further serve as a national basis for the researches and developments in radiation protection dosimetry in Korea.
Since provisions on the technical criteria for personnel dosimetry was amended three years ago, several improvements in the technique of monitoring personnel doses by TLD have taken place, but for the photograpfic film as a personnel monitor, additional investigations should be carried out for its accuracy of dose estimates because of its wide use in the radiation involved industries. So, this paper describes the methods to develope dose evaluation algorithm for photographic film using ISO reference radiations by i) empirical formula, ii) degree-of-fit method, and iii) matrix approximation. These methods show a good agreement between irradiated and calculated dose within tolerance level represented in ANSI N13. 11, and can be used for the dose evaluation of X, ${\gamma}$ and/or radiation fields.
An angular dependence experiment was made and a performance test of the Teledyne dosimetry system was done in accordance with the ANSI N13.11-1992. The angular dependence experiment was performed with $^{137}Cs$ and low energy X-ray beam. Teledyne dosimetry system performed well at the $0^{\circ}$ angle of incidence for all dosimeters in both vertical and horizontal irradiations. It would have easily passed the 0.5 tolerance limit. But the dosimetry system was not performed well at the ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ angle of incidence for low energy X-ray beam. The accuracy for $^{137}Cs$ beam at all angles of incidence was within the 0.5 tolerance limit. Therefore performance of the dosimetry system could be considered acceptable in case that the dosimeter is irradiated to $^{137}Cs$ beam. However, it could not be acceptable for the dosimeter irradiated to low energy X-ray, especially at more than ${\pm}40^{\circ}$

Background: In the calibration and testing laboratory of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, the old X-ray generator used for the production of reference X-ray fields was replaced with a new one. For this newly installed X-ray irradiation system, beam alignment as well as the verification of beam qualities was conducted. Materials and Methods: The existing X-ray generator, Phillips MG325, was replaced with YXLON Y.TU 320-D03 in order to generate reference X-ray fields. Theoretical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations were used to determine initial filter thickness. Beam alignment was performed in three steps to deliver a homogeneous radiation dosage to the target at different distances. Finally, the half-value layers were measured for different X-ray fields to verify beam qualities by using an ion chamber. Results and Discussion: Beam alignment was performed in three steps, and collimators and other components were arranged to maintain the uniformity of the mean air kerma rate within ${\pm}2.5%$ at the effective beam diameter of 28 cm. The beam quality was verified by using half-value layer measurement methods specified by American National Standard Institute (ANSI) N13.11-2009 and International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-4037. For each of the nine beams than can be generated by the new X-ray irradiation system, air kerma rates for X-ray fields of different beam qualifies were measured. The results showed that each air kerma rate and homogeneity coefficient of the first and second half-value layers were within ${\pm}5%$ of the recommended values in the standard documents. Conclusion: The results showed that the new X-ray irradiation system provides beam qualities that are as high as moderate beam qualities offered by National Institute of Standards and Technology in ANSI N13.11-2009 and those for narrow-spectrum series of ISO-4037.
Purpose: We have developed new film dosimetry algorithm for personal dosimetry and examined its characteristics. Materials and methods: Agfagaevart personal monitoring 2/10 films are used. Films which are in the film badges filtered with Cu 0.3mm, plastic 1.5mm, Aluminum 0.6mm and tin 0.8mm, were exposed by standard dosimetry laboratory. Irradiated energy categories are ANSI N13.1l Category III, and IV. Manual type film precessor and X-rite film densitometor was used. Filtered densities to energy relations and does to transformed densities relations can be obtained ofter transformation of H&D curves to linear shape by polynomal fitting. Reults : Personal dose be determined within 25% error for category m and 15% for category IV. And we are able to evaluate the exposed energy. Conclusion : New algorithm developed in this study is good for personal dosimetry within 30% error range for catergory III and IV. It is expectd to be complete personal dosimetry algorithm with further study for categrory, I, Dand II V.
Recently, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) had made some changes in the radiation sources specified from those in the original performance test criteria ANSI N13. 11-1983. In case or beta category, in addition to the high-energy $^{90}$ Sr/$^{90}$ Y beta source, the $^{204}$ Tl source was added because many workplaces have significant levels of lower energy betas. In this study, the performance or the Teledyne PB-3 personnel dosimetry system in the fields of $^{204}$ Tl and $^{90}$ Sr/ $^{90}$ Y beta was investigated using the PTB beta secondary standard sources. The new beta correction function of PB-3 personnel dosimetry system for $^{204}$ Tl beta was also developed in this response experiment. The results show that the Teledyne PB-3 personnel dosimetry system is very effective for $^{90}$ Sr/ $^{90}$ Y beta dose assessment. In case of $^{204}$ Tl beta radiation, however, the results of simple performance test indicated that the use of beta correction factor(=2.088) which was recommanded by manufacturer may result in unexpectable overestimation of delivered dose by about 60%, while the use of developed beta correction function could measure the delivered doses in errors of 15%.
This paper describes the methods and results of the personnel dosimetry performance tests which were been implemented for the first time in Korea in 1995. Seven categories, except the neutron category prescribed in the ANSI N13.11-1993, were adopted in the test. Fifteen types of dosimeters were participated by fourteen dosimeter processing institutes. A total of 129 dosimeters were selected to test-each type - 15 dosimeters for each of the seven categories and 24 for the controls. A total of 144 radiation categories were employed in the test and a total of 2560 (including 400 controls)dosimeters were submitted-7 categories for each type of the fifteen types dosimeters and 39 categories for the retest. The performance index in each category. sum of the absolute value of the bias and the standard deviation value of the performance quotient. was estimated by the use of delivered and processed dose equivalents according to the standard procedure. The performance in a given category was assessed as acceptable, for the deep and shallow dose equivalents (or the absorbed dose), if the performance index was less than 0.5. The test results showed 54% of the processors passed in the first test, 33% in the retest and 13% in the second retest.
