In order to examine the effect of cementite precipitated on the steel surface on the carburizing rate, the carburizing process was carried out at various boost times to measure the mass gain and carbon flux, phase analysis and carbon concentration analysis were performed on the surface of the carburized specimen. In the case of the only boost type, the longer the boost time, the more the mass gain by the diffused carbon follows the parabolic law and tends to increase. In particular, as the boost time increased, the depth of cementite precipitation and the average size of cementite on the steel surface increased. At a boost time of 7 min, the fraction of cementite precipitated on the surface is 7.32 vol.%, and the carburizing rate of carbon into the surface (surface-carbon flux) is about 17.4% compared to the calculated value because the area of the chemical (catalyst) where the carburization reaction takes place is reduced. The measured carbon concentration profile of the carburized specimen tended to be generally lower than the carbon concentration calculated by the model without considering precipitated cementite. On the other hand, in the pulse type, the mass gain by the diffused carbon increased according to the boost time following a linear law. At a boost time of 7 min, the fraction of cementite precipitated on the surface was 3.62 vol.%, and the surface-carbon flux decreased by about 4.1% compared to the calculated value. As a result, a model for predicting the actual carbon flux was presented by applying the carburization resistace coefficient derived from the surface cementite fraction as a variable.

This paper described the process of improving durability performance of the exhaust decoupler by the plasma nitriding. The properties of plasma nitriding treatment of AIS1304 stainless steel were tested using specimens before applying plasma nitriding to a mesh ring. In order to analyses the effect of plasma nitriding treatment on the mechanical properties, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopes), roughness and hardness tester were used. Based on specimen plasma nitriding, we could find appropriate condition for application to the mesh ring of decoupler. To confirm the improved durability performance, we compared the number of cycles, which reaches to fracture, of the nitrided decoupler and that of the unnitrided decoupler by the bending cyclic test. In this test, the durability and wear resistance of the mesh ring are significantly improved by plasma nitriding treatment.

$WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ N multilayered coatings are performed by their periodically repeated structures of lamellae of WC-Ti/$WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ Nmaterials. The $WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ N coatings with variable Al content were deposited onto AISI D2 steel by cathodic arc deposition (CAD) method. The electrochemical behavior of multilayered $WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ N coatings with different phases (WC- Ti$0.6/Al_{0.4}$ N, $WC-Ti_{0.53}$$Al_{0.47}$N, $WC-Ti_{0.5}$$Al_{0.5}$ N and $WC-Ti_{ 0.43}$$Al_{0.57}$ N) was investigated in deaerated 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature. The corrosion behaviors for the multilayered coatings were investigated by electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization) and surface analyses (X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES)). In the petentiodynamic polarization test, the corrosion current density of $WC-Ti_{0.5}$$Al_{0.5}$N was lower than others.

In this study, we investigated the effect of fatigue crack propagation of the beams which have a vital importance in engineering applications, on the natural frequency of the system. Beams which have a wide range of applications, are used as fundamental structural elements in engineering structures. Therefore, early detection of any damages in these structures is of vital importance for the prevention of possible destructive damages. One of the widely used methods of early detection of damages is the vibration analysis of the structure. Hence, it is of vital importance to detect and monitor any changes in the natural frequencies of the structure. From this standpoint, in this study we experimentally investigated the effect of fatigue crack propagation on beams produced from 4140 steel, of the natural frequency of the beam. A crack was opened on the $8{\times}16{\times}500mm$ beam using a 3 mm long and 0.25 mm wide wire erosion. The beam, then, underwent 3 point bending tests at 10 Hz with a dynamic fatigue device and its natural frequencies were measured in scheduled intervals and any changes taking place on the natural frequencies of the beam were measured. This data allowed us to identify and measure the crack occurring on the beam subjected to dynamic loading, during the propagation phase. This method produced experimental data. The experimental data showed that the natural frequency of the beam decreased with the propagation of the fatigue crack on the beam.
This paper reports the numerical investigation conducted to study the influence of Local-Distortional (L-D) interaction mode buckling on post buckling strength erosion in fixed ended lipped channel cold formed steel columns. This investigation comprises of 81 column sections with various geometries and yield stresses that are carefully chosen to cover wide range of strength related parametric ratios like (i) distortional to local critical buckling stress ratio ($0.91{\leq}F_{CRD}/F_{CRL}{\leq}4.05$) (ii) non dimensional local slenderness ratio ($0.88{\leq}{\lambda}_L{\leq}3.54$) (iii) non-dimensional distortional slenderness ratio ($0.68{\leq}{\lambda}_D{\leq}3.23$) and (iv) yield to non-critical buckling stress ratio (0.45 to 10.4). The numerical investigation is carried out by conducting linear and non-linear shell finite element analysis (SFEA) using ABAQUS software. The non-linear SFEA includes both geometry and material non-linearity. The numerical results obtained are deeply analysed to understand the post buckling mechanics, failure modes and ultimate strength that are influenced by L-D interaction with respect to strength related parametric ratios. The ultimate strength data obtained from numerical analysis are compared with (i) the experimental tests data concerning L-D interaction mode buckling reported by other researchers (ii) column strength predicted by Direct Strength Method (DSM) column strength curves for local and distortional buckling specified in AISI S-100 (iii) strength predicted by available DSM based approaches that includes L-D interaction mode failure. The role of flange width to web depth ratio on post buckling strength erosion is reported. Then the paper concludes with merits and limitations of codified DSM and available DSM based approaches on accurate failure strength prediction.
The paper addresses contribution to the modeling and optimization of major machinability parameters (cutting force, surface roughness, and tool wear) in finish dry hard turning (FDHT) for machinability evaluation of hardened AISI grade die steel D3 with PVD-TiN coated (Al2O3-TiCN) mixed ceramic tool insert. The turning trials are performed based on Taguchi's L18 orthogonal array design of experiments for the development of regression model as well as adequate model prediction by considering tool approach angle, nose radius, cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut as major machining parameters. The models or correlations are developed by employing multiple regression analysis (MRA). In addition, statistical technique (response surface methodology) followed by computational approaches (genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization) have been employed for multiple response optimization. Thereafter, the effectiveness of proposed three (RSM, GA, PSO) optimization techniques are evaluated by confirmation test and subsequently the best optimization results have been used for estimation of energy consumption which includes savings of carbon footprint towards green machining and for tool life estimation followed by cost analysis to justify the economic feasibility of PVD-TiN coated Al2O3+TiCN mixed ceramic tool in FDHT operation. Finally, estimation of energy savings, economic analysis, and sustainability assessment are performed by employing carbon footprint analysis, Gilbert approach, and Pugh matrix, respectively. Novelty aspects, the present work: (i) contributes to practical industrial application of finish hard turning for the shaft and die makers to select the optimum cutting conditions in a range of hardness of 45-60 HRC, (ii) demonstrates the replacement of expensive, time-consuming conventional cylindrical grinding process and proposes the alternative of costlier CBN tool by utilizing ceramic tool in hard turning processes considering technological, economical and ecological aspects, which are helpful and efficient from industrial point of view, (iii) provides environment friendliness, cleaner production for machining of hardened steels, (iv) helps to improve the desirable machinability characteristics, and (v) serves as a knowledge for the development of a common language for sustainable manufacturing in both research field and industrial practice.

The effects of carburizing pressure and gas ratio on vacuum carburizing properties (uniformity and surface characteristics) have been studied through the analyses of carbon concentration, hardness, surface color, surface roughness and type of carbon bonding. AISI 4115 steel specimens were carburized with various pressures (1, 5, and 10 Torr) at different locations (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6) inside a furnace held at 950 ℃. Since the carburizing pressure represents the density of the carburizing gas, it plays an important role in improving the carburizing uniformity according to locations in the furnace. As the carburizing pressure increased, the carburizing uniformity according to the sample location was improved, but the surface of the carburized specimen was discolored due to the residual acetylene gas, which does not contribute to the carburizing reaction. Therefore, the carburizing uniformity and surface discoloration have been improved by injecting acetylene gas (carburizing gas) and nitrogen gas (non-reactive gas) in a specific ratio.

In this study, ternary Ti-Mo-N and new quaternary Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings were synthesized on steel substrates(AISI D2) and Si wafers by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating (AIP) using Ti target and d.c. magnetron sputtering technique using Mo and Si targets in $N_2/Ar$ gaseous mixture. Ternary Ti-Mo-N coatings were substitutional solid-solution of (Ti, Mo)N and showed maximum hardness of approximately 30 GPa at the Mo content of ${\sim}10$. %. The Ti-Mo-Si-N coating with the Si content of 8.8 at. % was a composite consisting of fine (Ti, Mo)N crystallites and amorphous $Si_3N_4$ phase. The hardness of the Ti-Mo-Si(8.8 at. %)-N coatings exhibited largely increased hardness value of ${\sim}48$ GPa due to the microstructural evolution to the fine composite microstructure and the refinement of (Ti, Mo)N crystallites. The average friction coefficient of the Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings largely decreased with increase of Si content. The microstructures of Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings were investigated with instrumental analyses of XRD, XPS, and HRTEM in this work.

As technology advances, there is a demand for development of hard solid lubricant coating. (Ti, Cr, Zr)N-$MoS_2$ films were deposited on AISI H13 tool steel substrate by co-deposition of $MoS_2$ with (Ti, Cr, Zr)N using a D.C. magnetron sputtering process. The influence of the $N_2Ar$ gas ratio, the amount of $MoS_2$ in the films and the bias voltage on the mechanical and structural properties of the films were investigated. The highest hardness level was observed at the $N_2/Ar$ gas ratio of 0.3. Hardness of the films did not change much with the increase of the $MoS_2$ content in the films. As the substrate bias potential was increased, hardness level of the film reached maximum at -150 V. Surface morphology of these films indicated that high hardness was attributed to the fine dome structure.

This paper presents an analytical study on the strength and stiffness of various types of truss structures. The applied models are triangular-like opened truss-wall triangular model (OTT), closed truss-wall triangular model (CTT), opened solid-wall triangular model (OST), and hypercube models defined as core-filled or core-spaced cube. The models are analyzed by numerical model analysis using DEFORM 2D/3D tool with AISI 304 stainless steel. Then, the ideal solutions for stiffness and strength are defined. Finally, the relative elastic modulus of the core-spaced model is obtained as 0.0009, which is correlated with the cancellous bone for the relative density range of 0.029-0.03, and the relative elastic modulus for the core-filled model is obtained as 0.0015, which is correlated with cancellous bone for the relative density range of 0.035-0.036. For the relative compressive yield strength, the OTT reasonably agrees with the cancellous bone for the relative density of 0.042 and the relative compressive strength of 0.05. The CTT and OST are in good agreement at the relative density of 0.013 and the relative compressive yield strength of 0.002. The hypercube models can be used for the cancellous bone for stiffness, and the triangular models can be used for the cancellous bone for strength. However, none of the models can be used to replace the compact bone because it requires much higher stiffness and strength. In the near future, compact bone replacement must be further studied. In addition, previously mentioned models should be developed further.
