  • The metalliding technique was adopted to obtain the diffusion coating of zirconium on AISI 304 Stainless Steel in molten mixed chlorides (32.9wt.%LICl-34.8wt.%NaCl-32.3wt.%). Experiments were carried out in argon gas atmosphere. The electrolytic cell was consisted of a AISI 304 Stainless steel cathode and a consumable zirconium anode. The quality of deposit was analysed by SEM, Optical Microscope, EDS, and also examined by the Micro-Vickers hardness and corrosion tests. Interface of deposit layer was identified as zirconium-iron alloy layer caused by diffusion process at elevated temperatures. The optimum condition for the metalliding was found to be the bath temperature of $550^{\circ}C$, the concentration of $K_2ZrF_6$ ,5wt.%, cathodic current derrent density of 7.0 to 10.0mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ , and anodic current density of 2.0mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • The crevice corrosion behavior on austenitic AISI 304 and 316L stainless steel welded by TIG, MIG, $CO_2$ and SMA was studied. The results are as follows : In 10% $FeCl_3$ solution and natural sea water sampled near Mokpo port, the base metal of 304 stainless steel showed small amount corrosion, whereas 316L stainless steel did not showed any corrosion in the test periods. The weight loss caused by crevice corrosion increased with increasing weld heat input and residual .delta. ferrite formed in welded part. The corrosion resistance of the welded part was in the order of TIG, MIG, $CO_2$ and SMA. From this tendency, it is proved that the smaller heat input gives the better corrosion resistance.

  • The electrochemical corrosion properties of austenitic AISI 304 steel subjected to a long-term-aging heat treatment were investigated. AISI 304 steel was aged at 700 ℃ for up to 10,000 h. The variation in the microstructure of the aged specimens was observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Electrochemical polarization experiments were performed to obtain the corrosion current density (Icorr) and corrosion potential (Ecorr). Analyses indicated that the metastable intermetallic carbide M23C6 formed near the γ/γ grain boundary and coarsened with increasing aging time; meanwhile, the δ-ferrite decomposed into the σ phase and into M23C6 carbide. As the aging time increased, the current density increased, but the corrosion potential of the austenitic specimen remained high (at least 0.04 ㎛/cm2). Because intergranular carbide was absent, the austenitic annealed specimen exhibited the highest pitting resistance. Consequently, the corrosion resistance of austenitic AISI 304 steel decreased as the aging heat treatment time increased.

Effect of post processing of digital image correlation on obtaining accurate true stress-strain data for AISI 304L

  • The aim of this study is to provide a clear and accessible method to obtain accurate true-stress strain data, and to extend the limited material data beyond the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) for AISI 304L. AISI 304L is used for the outer construction for some types of nuclear transport packages, due to its post-yield ductility and high failure strain. Material data for AISI 304L beyond UTS is limited throughout literature. 3D digital image correlation (DIC) was used during a series of uniaxial tensile experiments. Direct method extracted data such as true strain and instantaneous cross-sectional area throughout testing such that the true stress-strain response of the material up to failure could be created. Post processing of the DIC data has a considerable effect on the accuracy of the true stress-strain data produced. Influence of subset size and smoothing of data was investigated by using finite element analysis to inverse model the force displacement response in order to determine the true stress strain curve. The FE force displacement response was iteratively adapted, using subset size and smoothing of the DIC data. Results were validated by matching the force displacement response for the FE model and the experimental force displacement curve.

  • The evolution of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was studied with torsion test for AISI 304 stainless steel in the temperature range of $900-1000^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range of 0.05-5/sec. The evolution of DRX was investigated with microstructural analysis and change of flow stress curve slope. The investigation of serrated grain boundaries using electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis indicated that the nucleated new DRX grain size was similar to the size of bulging part. Before the steady state, the dynamically recrystallizing grains do not remain a constant size and gradually grow to the size of fully DRX grain at steady state. The calculation of grain size was based on $X_{DRX}$ and the assumption, which the nucleated DRX grains are growing to the steady state, continuously. It was found that the calculated results agreed with the microstructure of the alloy.

  • 본 연구는 항공구조재로 널리 사용되고 있는 AISI 304강에 대한 상온 및 고온 인장특성을 신뢰성 기법을 이용하여 실험한 결과를 정리한 것이다. 인장실험은 ASTM 규정에 의하여 수행하였고, 정규확률지를 이용하여 항공구조설계 시 적용할 수 있는 A-Basis 및 B-Basis 강도를 평가하는 신뢰성 해석을 수행하였다.

Nd:YAG 레이저 맞대기 용접의 비드형상 예측에 관한 유한요소해석 (Finite element analysis for prediction of bead shape of Nd:YAG laser butt welding)

  • Nd:YAG pulse laser welding of stainless steel plate was simulated to find welding condition by using commercial finite element code MARC. Due to geometric symmetry, a half model of AISI 304 stainless steel plate was considered and user subroutines were applied to boundary condition for the heat transfer. Material properties such as conductivity, specific heat, mass density and latent heat were given as a function of temperature. As results, Three dimensional heat source model for pulse laser beam conditions of butt welding has been designed by the comparison between the finite element analysis results and experimental data on AISI 304 stainless steel plate. Nd:YAG laser welding for AISI 304 stainless steel was successfully simulated and it should be useful to determine optimal welding condition.

온도변화에 따른 AISI 304SS의 틈내 전위강하에 관한 연구 (A Study on the IR Drop in Crevice of AISI 304 Stainless Steel by Temperature Variation)

  • As the results of recent industrial development, many industrial plants and marine structures are exposed to severe corrosion environment than before. Especially, under the wet environment, crevice corrosion damage problems necessarily occur and encourage many interests to prevent them. In this study, the electrochemical polarization test was carried out to study characteristics of crevice corrosion for AISI 304 stainless steel in various solution temperatures. The results are as follows ; 1) as the solution temperature increased in IN $\textrm{H}_2\textrm{SO}_4$, the passive current density and critical current density were increased, whereas corrosion potential and break down potential were nearly constant, 2) as the solution temperature increased. the induced time for initiation of crevice corrosion was shortened. 3) The potential range in the crevice was -220mV/SCE to -380mV/SCE according to the distance from the crevice opening, which is lower than that of external surface of -200mV/SCE.
